死んで覚えてリトライを繰り返すオールドスクールアクションの良作

本作の特徴をストアページから引用すると「Classic hardcore arcade action」とある。実際のプレイフィールは古い例えで言えば魔界村シリーズ、近年のゲームでは簡素化した2DのDarksoul、複雑化したSuperMeatBoyのような印象。要するに死に覚えゲーであり、繰り返しのトライ&エラーを強いるゲームデザインが本作の肝になっている。

本作がClassicなポイント
-見ての通りのレトロなグラフィック
-ストーリーが非常にシンプル
-操作性 
 気になったのはジャンプ。任意キー+ジャンプボタンでの方向ジャンプとその場でのジャンプが別物になっている。最近の大抵のゲームではその場での垂直ジャンプ中に空中で方向キーを入力する事により空中での姿勢が制御できるが本作ではそれが不可。慣れない内はストレスだったが慣れると本作はこのジャンプを踏まえたレベルデザインでありAI設計が施されている事も理解でき面白い。

-練られたレベルデザイン、分かりやすくも特徴的なギミック、シンプルながら歯応えある敵AI
ステージは7(6+隠し1面)。陸あり空あり海ありダンジョンありと、どれもステージ毎に特徴があり上手い具合に敵が配置されている。またステージ毎にボス含め、固有の敵キャラクタがいる。これが初見では戸惑う挙動を見せる敵もいる為、簡単に攻略出来ないような絶妙なバランスになっているし、新鮮味を損なわせない良いアクセントになっている。

-数少ないチェックポイント[/u]
最近では細かくリトライポイントが設けられているゲームが一般的だが本作はそうではない。各ステージにチェックポイントは中間地点の1つしかない。これがリトライ回数を増やす要因でもあるが、目標到達への達成感を高めるエッセンスともなっている。

-HPや残機の概念が無いライフシステム
主人公のバイキングVolgarrは装備品が無ければ一撃死する。生存確率を上げる為にはマップに点在する宝箱から盾や兜などの装備を集める必要がある。装備があれば最大3撃まで敵の攻撃に耐える事が出来る。これが簡単に死ぬ訳でもなく少しのミスなら許容される程度の塩梅となっており難易度の舵取りが上手く出来ている。

参考として2周で計8.5時間程度(1週目が5~6時間、2周目が2~3時間)。
難易度が1種類しか無い為、所要時間の多少は腕前によって前後。

各ステージのどこかにある壊れる壁を破壊して入手出来るアイテムがあったり、特別なやり方で入手できるアイテムの数によって隠し最終ステージにいけたり(マルチエンディング)と通常クリア後でも改めてチャレンジ出来る要素有り。

グラフィックの見た目やしょっぱなのステージ構成からラスタンサーガのオマージュかと思いきや、アクトレイザー2と超魔界村を足して2で割ったようなゲーム。グラフィックがスーパーファミコン風なのも納得。

剣と盾、壁に突き刺して足場にもできる槍を駆使して進んでいく、ステージ制サイドビューアクションゲーム。

主人公はモーションのそこかしこに硬直があり、一度ジャンプしたら微調整は一切できない魔界村のアーサーや悪魔城ドラキュラのシモンのごとき鈍重さの上、デフォルト状態では二回攻撃を喰らえば死亡、穴に落ちれば一撃死、さらに復活ポイントは最終面を除いてステージ中たった1つ。そのため、一挙手一投足が非常に重要で、その一挙手一投足をどうすれば良いかを考えるのがこのゲームの面白さ。

ステージ構成に悪意はあまり無く、敵が時間差で波状攻撃を仕掛けてきたり無闇に穴に叩き落とそうとはしてこない。その場その場の敵や罠を丁寧に捌いていけばきちんとクリアできる丁寧な作り込み。

私はオールクリアまで6時間ほどだったが、鈍重な主人公のゲームに不慣れな方はもっと時間がかかるかもしれない。

「これでは歯ごたえが無い」という方には、特定の方法で行ける高難度ステージPath of the Valkyrieも用意されている。

非常に完成度の高い、アクションゲームの名作。

面白い

チェックポイントの数の少なさ
裸の状態で敵に接触すれば問答無用で即死
など、ところどころに魔界村ライクな部分が見られます
しかし、魔界村のレッドアリーマーのようなイレギュラーが存在しない、残機の概念が存在しない分、ほんの少しだけ優しめ

何も考えずにプレイしたら難易度は物凄く上がるけれど、行動をパターン化出来るようになれば時間はかかるもののクリア出来るようになり、いわゆる「積む」ような事は無いです
つまり覚えゲーのマゾゲーなので根気と体力が入ります
アクションゲームが苦手な人にもおすすめできるアクションゲームだと思います

脳みそ空っぽにしてプレイできるトリガーハッピゲーが好きな人、対戦ゲームで負けたからと周辺機器を破壊するような人
そういう方は他のゲームをプレイすることをおすすめします

Now that I'm a working adult, I rarely have the energy or time to play games. Even the most engaging epics (Xenoblade Chronicles, Skyrim, etc) can only hold my attention for a few hours, MAX, before I need to do something else. Maybe it's because they don't feel as rewarding any more, or the stories just aren't as engaging as they used to be, but I know that I peeled off the "hardcore" label from my gamer card long ago.

I tell you this anecdote because I just spent nearly 10 straight hours playing Volgarr, and didn't even realize it.

This game is a pungent distillation of everything that I loved and hated about video games in the 80's and 90's. Back then, memory was at a premium, so in order to make a game feel like it was worth the $50 price tag, developers make them hard as nails in order to extend the play time you would need to devote in order to complete the game. This meant hours upon hours of committing each level, every enemy and all the boss patterns to muscle memory, and knowing how to react in each situation. It was an arduous process, but when you finally mastered a level and beat the boss, you felt like you had accomplished something. I realized, upon completing Volgarr, that this is what I had been missing from most modern games, where victory is all but ensured.

Volgarr is hard. Words like brutal and unforgiving don't really do it justice. Its smartly hard. I had quite a bit of trouble with the game, and actually gave it up for almost a year after I got stuck on stage 2. When I finally picked it back up this weekend, I approached it as a puzzle game; each encounter, every enemy's placement and movement, was done with care - all I had to do was find the pattern and "solve" the puzzle with Volgarr's moveset. This made every advancement feel like a real victory, and this game is one of the first in a long time to elicit actual cheers of joy when I completed a stage for the first time.

Volgarr never felt cheap, exploitative, or unfair. I died hundreds of times, repeating stages over and over, but it never made me angry or frustrated, only determined. Determined because every playthrough got me a little bit further: into the next room, understanding a new monster's attack pattern, or solving a new section of platforming. Every death had an "aha!" moment attached to it. If I died at a section I had played through before, it was 100% my fault. Overall randomness is low, so it is extremely rare that a strategy you succeeded with once will fail the next time.

I could wax poetic telling you about how good the controls feel, or the quality of graphics and music, but there are lots of other reviews for that. I simply wish to convey how satisfying this game is to play, and how accomplished I felt (and hopefully, you will too) when I beat each and every stage. I experienced a range of emotions, from trepidation, anger, fear and elation, something that few modern games can achieve, even with their grandiose storytelling and advanced visual presentation.

I'm not going to assign a number value to my review, because I think that trying to quantify any gaming experience is fairly pointless. Games aren't commodities with certain valuable characteristics, like a vacuum cleaner or toaster oven. Ultimately, what each person gets out of a game really depends on what they expect, what they like from an interactive experience, and how the game meets those needs. Games, in this regard, are like art, and you can't rate art, you can only relate how it makes you feel.

Volgarr challenged me, it made me feel young again, and it gave me a sense of accomplishment.

I dig it.

Volgarr the Viking is definitely in my top 5 favorite game on steam !


this game is so cruel , but a fair one, you need to have a good awareness of your surroundings and take time to understand and learn patern , it's kinda like a action chess game its so methodical yet with brutal action.

Overview: Retro Style 2D action Platformer

The Good:

+ The developers intentions were to create a retro 2D action game and in many regards succeeded wonderfully. This game is easy to learn but hard to master.

+ Great controls

+ The game is hard only because it requires memorization of the level and enemy patterns to succeed at the game. With only 6 levels each only taking around 10 minutes to complete...IF you know what you're doing. If you are playing for your first time then expect each level to take roughly over an hour to complete.

+ Only one checkpoint per level. (This is an old school 2d action game after all!)

+ The game has a normal path and a hard path to complete. You can only unlock the hard path by successfully collecting treasure chests throughout the level without getting hit.

+Three different endings depending on which path you took.

+ Great sound and music

The Bad:

- Warning! may cause stress, frustration, and other bad feelings.

Conclusion

A game like this is difficult to review in modern times because the developers intention was to create a game a few decades earlier. This game borrows heavily from Ghosts n' Goblins. It was "refreshing" to play an old school game, it makes you realize just how much easier games have come.

The first thing that catches your attention is the old-school feel. The player controls a Viking that must fight his way through an army of monsters. By the way that the game looks and plays, it has a style similar to Taito’s Rastan, a classic from 1987.

One thing that makes traveling through the levels more interesting is that your weapons are for more than just combat. For ranged combat, you have a spear to attack from a safe distance. However, it is also useful for navigation. If there is a wall that is too tall to jump over, throwing a powered-up spear will cause it to stick to the wall acting as a ledge. By making the weapons multifaceted, it makes for some well-designed platforming.

Of course, the combat is the real draw of the game. With the simple and tight controls, fighting is as easy as it was back in the 8-bit days. As for the fighting, the action is as varied as the environments. In one stages, you are dodging spears while sliding down slopes. In another, you are fending off mermen while riding on a raft. With the action constantly changing, it makes you want to continue progressing throughout the game.

One problem about this progressing is that it is too generous with progressing. If your character dies, you lose half your treasure and return to the latest checkpoint. Otherwise, the game does not hurt you. With unlimited lives and saved progress, it makes finishing too easy. Having either is good, but having both takes away from the old-school feeling that the game was going for. In order to make the game play like it should, the player should stick to a lives cap. Otherwise, it is possible to finish in a single day.

Even though the combat is good, the enemies, while interesting, are not as deep as the combat. The stages have its own enemies to make each location visually interesting. The problem with this is that there are only a few enemy types in each stage. In most cases, it is only a palette swap to turn the same enemy into a new one. Once you see the first enemy, expect to see it repeat constantly until reaching the boss. This might have been acceptable in the 80s and 90s, but nowadays, more variety is expected.

Manly game for men. Challenging old school action platformer. Don't expect a cakewalk.

Features two different playthroughs with Path of the Crystal and Path of the Valkyrie. Game has 6 worlds and each world except the first one has 2 different versions. Path of the Crystal versions are normal/casual (by no means does this imply that those levels are easy) where you have unlimited lives, while Path of the Valkyrie ones are not necessarily harder in their design, just that the full playthrough on those is more hardcore as your lives are limited.

Old school controlls. Doesn't require a controller imo, only 2 buttons + arrows keys are involved and you can't really control the jump once commited.

I have just completed the game twice and currently I'm going for the A ending. This game is incredible. It might be a bit discouraging because the difficulty tends to ramp up quickly. Especially the first and second world are good examples of this. But as challenging the game is, it is even more rewarding.

I love the feeling of flawlessly beating a boss which at first I couldn't even reach without dying 50 times. That's the beauty of the game. It rewards you by showing how you slowly got better. There's little to no randomness or luck to the game. Every single time you get hit it's your own fault, and if you manage to overcome a situation without getting hit, it's all thanks to you: the player.

As you progress farther and farther in the game the areas you already cleared before become a breeze and you can easily jump, roll and slash through hordes of enemies that you used to have trouble with. I never felt a situation or enemy was particularly unfair. Got hit by an arrow? Duck faster next time! Fell into a pit? Time your jumps better! Like I explained before, the hazards in every world won't change, your skill will. Greatly.

If anyone who reads this is having a hard time completing the game, or heck, even the first world. I'll tell them: Keep going! it is definitely worth it.

This game reminds me of a few great games from a long time ago; mega man, castlevania, and demon's crest. This game can be quite challenging as it is simple. The game seems to be more of test of your memory rather than skill; although skill is definatly required...or should I say patience.

The game:
- controls well.
- looks quite nice for its style of game.
- requires little hard drive space.

I must admit, when I first played this game I didin't realize there was a sword attack without having to push down while using spear chuck attack. After say about 20 or so deaths I started to use the sword attack.After about 50 or so deaths i finally beat the first stage.I'd have to say patience, and perhaps a good night sleep definatly helped.

A fun challenging game that requires you to sit down for a while and commit to beating a level, which is not often shown in most games nowadays. Definitely worth it if you want a challenging old style game that makes you feel like a viking badass

You don't know what you are doing, sadly you die at the hands of the second enemy you encountered.

Basically Ghosts'n Goblins but with a manly viking instead of a king in underwear. This game is so hard, you'll grow a beard and become a nord.

In short, this game is a challenge. It's not impossibly hard, but it doesn't hold your hand at all.
The only thing that I find negative about this game, is how much of a difficulty curve it is to get the controls down. It can be really frustrating to be confused as to how to do things, but once you do figure it out, it's only uphill.
Music? Calm, but alright, and it certainly achieves a tone where you won't get pissed off but you'll definitely feel like a wimp once it stops from you dying.
Graphics! Yes! I love the aesthetic! Very nicely animated, nothing feels too out of place and things that SHOULD pop out, DO pop out! (although it was a bit frustrating when a few things blended into the background but were hazards)
Gameplay/Game Design! THIS is where the game shines, Every level starts off with overwhelming information and danger, both of which you'll slowly learn over the course of your hundreds of deaths on each stage. After finally crafting a careful strategy as to how to get to the end of the level, you reach the bosses. At first they're not too hard, specially when you get their pattern down, but I can definitely not say the same about the later ones. These will test how quickly you can learn and adapt, because if you ♥♥♥♥ up now, it's allllllll the way back.
Again, a GREAT challenge, where knowledge and skill are both HEAVILY needed. Then there's different endings, but screw those amirite.
9/10: Fantastic, but VERY little away from being perfect. Give it a shot if you're into the Souls series style of things.
