Well, I don't understand the bad ratings really...
I really enjoy this game.
It borrows alot from the Mass Effect series.
It's kinda, Mass Effect but in Medieval time.
You get the option to seduce either big ♥♥♥♥ or small ♥♥♥♥ (hohoho) ;-)

The Game in total have 2 different paths to choose from.
I will not spoil it.
But one path leads to a RAMPAGING AMOUNT of Power!
And the other one, you will stay as you are.

Rampaging power path is the path of evil.
And the other path is the path of good.
Kinda like Mass Effect.

Your actions in the game matter, your followers will be affected by the path you choose, and everyone around you.
I absolutely adore this game.

I recommend it, really I do.

The apocalypse is already happening.
The side you're on has already lost.
The world is falling apart under the tide of the endless hordes of the deadwalkers.
No way you're stopping that,
All there is to be done is to make the best of the FUBAR situation.
With assistance of an ancient demon who has been imprisoned inside your body.
Well, ♥♥♥♥.

PROS:

+ apocalyptic setting
+ great OST
+ SOME companions(<3 Mathras)
+ drawing strength from the demon slowly transforms the hero
+ humour

CONS:

- combat is ABYSMAL, will drive you insane more often than not
- artificial difficulty(stems from bad combat design)
- some characters couldn't be more cliché
- the last zone and the final boss are ♥♥♥♥ing ridiculous for all the wrong reasons
- THE DOUBLE SHIELD SKELLIES, ♥♥♥♥ THESE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥S

Oh, Spiders..you've done it again.
BBF is, by far, one of the most POLARIZING gaming experiences I've ever had.
On one hand, we have this grim world which has already gone to ♥♥♥♥.
The cavalry isn't coming, no legendary heroes are left to defend the realm.
Intriguing and unique premises.
Love it.
On the other hand, BBF's combat can destroy the seemingly awesome experience in mere seconds.
The general feeling and flow of moves, parries, strikes, blocking- stiff, counter-intuitive, broken.
This is how combat mechanics SHOULD NOT be made.
Hate it.
Ultimately, I'm recommending Bound By Flame, despite its glaring flaws.
The journey is worth it..or is it?
There's gonna be joy and there's gonna be pain.
Good luck, Vulcan.

the game is good. SureLY, the combat system is a little shaky, yet it's manageable. But between the good, morally challenging story and the quality textures and level design, this game has a lot to offer. I play it on easy - because combat, and i'm having a great time. I've seen people playing on hard, though, so it's doable. Definitely worth it

This oozes total Glen Cook Black Company flavor, which incidentally gives a great justification for the railroady early acts. By the time you're 15-20 hours in the poorly-ramped difficulty might get annoying, but until then it ticks all the ARPG boxes pretty competently.

(Also, difficulty ramp may be a matter of taste: every time you enter a new area you're overclassed, and then you grow into it, but when you're 20th level gaining the power or gear necessary to deal with a frozen citadel full of amped-up demons is a bit glacially slow for me.)

I don't know why people thought this game was super hard, I thought it was reasonably challenging.

It's like a poor man's action version of Dragon Age Origins or The Witcher 1. If you've played both of those games and are looking for another one to enjoy then go for this one, it's well made for the most part and interesting enough to keep you engaged throughout.

The fighting and gameplay mechanics are more involved,
the story and transformation concept bring something interesting and new that I love.
The characters, despite Edwen being a DA Morrigan rip-off and Randval is too close to GOT's Jaqen H'Gar (still like, even prefer they stay as they are,) are fun, dialogue's... actually funny and satisfying.
But, the dialogue and storyline are not diverse or cohesive (at all), the weight mechanic doesn't allow for much armor/weapon diversity, character customization is very limited. While I like the characters, they're EXTREMELY one-dimensional.
I was disappointed that the online community didn't have much in the way of mods, but that really doesn't have to do with Spiders' part, other than that there was a lot of slack I was hoping some immersive mods could pick up.
I feel like this game has an excellent concept and has a ton of potential, but maybe fell short on budgeting. Mars: War Logs did much better in these regards, but I have to say Bound by Flame would've been much more my thing.
I'm hoping we get a remake in the way we had Two Worlds II going above and beyond expectations set by the original Two Worlds where we saw the inconsistensies thrown out and replaced with better mechanics, more diversity, graphics, storyline, etc, whatever. If you'ved played both, or even just BbF as an experienced gamer, you'll know what I mean.

Also, why so heteronormative, Spiders?

Like, come on.

Anyway, I got this game on sale for like 6 bucks and consider that very worth it, but would feel shorted if I'd paid the original price for PC or console. Despite its shortcomings, it's worth playing. Support this studio so that we can see them able to better produce these games, I really think they have a lot of potential.

I'm serious about the heteronormativity tho.

Sidenote: I've been playing in offline mode for the last couple weeks. I've actually spent well over 20 hours playing this game.

Clunky but fun.

Pros:

-Graphics are pretty
-Gameplay can be challenging
-Doesn't take itself too seriously
-Music is ambient
-Reasonable amount of customisation (not tons though)

Things I like but others might not:

-Story is silly
-Combat is difficult to get the hang of and is clunky, but makes fighting normal monsters reasonably difficult at times as, unlike games similar to this, the enemies all attack at once - and will also exploit moves that knock you down etc
-Voice acting is cheesy

Cons:

-Gameplay can feel linear at times but mostly as you will traverse the same area (different areas but you will walk around them all a lot) going to different parts of it
-Some bugs with camera angles
-Although there is replayabilty, the other sides of choices and their consequences can be worked out during the first play through (I think)
-Some sound effects don't really feel like they've happened, I think they were just not mixed well or had bad EQ with a lack of bass and maybe mids too

If I had to compare it to other games I'd say it's a mixture of The Witcher, Dark Souls and Dragon Age... On a budget.

8/10 would parry again.

Edit: I got it on sale and have enjoyed playing, but if you're unsure don't pay full price as it is not everyone's cup of tea.

Enjoyable but rather one-sided action-rpg.

Bound by Flame is an action-rpg developed by Spiders Entertainment, the company that recently gave us The Technomancer. The game was released in May 2014 to subdued critical acclaim: currently it stands at 65% positive user-reviews on Steam and it only received a 56% score at Metacritic. Judging by those figures, it wouldn't seem like a game worthy to give a thorough playthrough, but in the end I am very glad I gave it a proper try.

The developers at Spiders, a small- to mid-size company, surely have been specializing in action-rpg's over the past couple of years. And their experience does show in Bound by Flame. At first sight, and during its first minutes of playing, the game doesn't feel special, or even good, at all. The story is once more one about the player having to save the world, this time against a horde of deadly Ice-Lords. The only twist is that as the protagonist you are possessed by a demon, and that by giving in or resisting to that entity, you can influence character development and playstyle (but only to a certain degree).

The story itself is by no means original and got only a couple of interesting twists during the 30 hours or so that my playthrough lasted. The different characters, most of them companions or allies in your combat against the evil Ice Lords, are hardly fleshed out at all – most of them are drawn inside the well-known lines of knight, archer or mage without any real personality. Happily, there are a few exceptions, such as an hilariously funny undead king, who peppers the latter part of the game with some wonderful lines which made me laugh out loud. This kind of black humour was an unexpected element of the game, and definitely helped me to get past some of its more repetitive parts.

Character development is pretty well done: by leveling up, one can spend attribute points, which can be put into one of three perk trees. One is warrior-like, focusing on two-handed combat, the other one is perfect for a more agile character, and finally there is a magic skilltree which unlocks both defensive and offensive fire magic. In combination with craftable weapons and armor, this offers a kind of rpg-light experience – not on the highest or deepest level, but still enjoyable nonetheless.

The one department where Bound by Flame really shines, is in its smooth and very intuitive combat. Playing with an Xbox 360-controller, the combat proved to be both exceptionally fluid and very rewarding. Running into battle without thinking would mostly result in a quick death, so a plan of action and some preparation was often needed. Good use of the available means – skills, potions and quick actions such as parry or jump back – turned out to be essential on several occasions, and learning to use them as efficiently as possible was very rewarding indeed. Several boss-like characters offered quite a challenge; some of them even drove me close to the point of giving up, but I'm glad I persisted. Neither graphically or in its audio department does Bound by Flame shine, but it doesn't drop any major points here either.

All in all, this game is more than the sum of its parts: the extremely well implemented combat manages to lift it to a higher level, and although there is nearly not enough variety in environments or in enemies, it managed to hold my interest right to the end.

Recommended to everyone who likes challenging action more than the role-playing in an a-rpg.

I will not lie, this game has a really interesting premise for a story. The situation you're thrust in is essentially a hopeless one, and dark fantasy always holds the potential for a great story to be told! As I said though, it has an interesting premise for a story but the execution just wasn't there. The ending as well was the equivalent of a whoopee cushion going off: all build up, but just a fart sound going off. Might as well have replaced the ending cutscene with Bob Barker playing the Price is Right loss horn. So much of the world felt untouched too, with mentions of Dwarves and alternate planes of existence constantly for example, but as a whole you only really visit...3 places I think? It doesn't help that the game was very linear in the places you did get to visit. As an aside, and kind of spoiler'y, the game incessantly mentions the big bad 7 Ice Lords, and how they'll bring an end to this world. They are so powerful they even might fight amongst themselves as they're all just that mad for power! It might be an alternative to consider, y'know! Turn them against one another! And then you beat only one of them and essentially beat the game by basically turning their life support off. Uh...okay.

Characters were serviceable, and some of them I feel could have been very memorable such as Mathras if they were fleshed out(no pun intended) a bit more. An immortal spirit who has seen at least 6,000 years of history. What is his dynamic? Who is he? Where is he from? Apparently from the UK somewhere, with exaggerated one-liners like "Toodle Pip". The dynamic between you and the demon was very interesting as well, and I feel should have been expanded upon...However, it doesn't matter if I liked the characters if I didn't enjoy playing through the game. The combat was dreadful. Enemies are essentially bullet sponges, so have fun pressing left click(or your chosen ability hotkey) over, and over, and over, and over again. The difficulty is also all over the place, and game balance is just objectively in favor of Ranger over Warrior. I can perfect block/parry the end boss' projectile as a Warrior(which takes quite a bit of timing) and still take damage from it, for example. However with Ranger? The timing for their dodge is so incredibly lenient and it bypasses damage altogether. It's silly.

I really could go on here about a lot of things, but really it isn't that bad, I just don't recommend this game at least at full price. If you ever find it cheap and are tempted though, go into it knowing that Warrior is a waste of space. Skip the tree completely and buckle your seatbelt for some stiff animations, numerous clipping issues, bugs out the wazoo, and some cheesy/awkward dialogue.

Basically it can be summed up by all games made by Spiders I guess, potential to be something greater but not quite there.

Don't go in expecting something big like Dragon Age or some other big title. All in all, it is a short, sweet game. Combat can be fun if you know how and when to react to certain attacks other than just holding the block button down constantly. A lot of people are just salty because they can't get a handle on the combat for whatever reason.

The story itself could be better, but I enjoyed it. My favorite character is totally a tie between the sassy female protagonist and Mathras.

Don't buy it for full price, as I said it is a pretty short game. Probably pay 15$ at most. I bought it when it was about 6$.

The game is kind of a mess to be honest. It certainly has some cool ideas, but there are just so many things wrong with Bound by Flame. Its a low budget action RPG disguised to look like some triple A Bioware type game. I was pretty excited when I first bought it, and I foolishly thought that it WOULD have a more higher budget feel, but after a few hours of gameplay I soon saw this game for what it really was. It's not all bad, and I do commend Spiders for their effort. I think this studio has a ton of potential and could someday very well be the next Bioware or something. However, the negatives outwweighed the positives for me with this game. The combat is...kind of terrible tbh. Incredibly unbalanced. Making enemies way harder than they should be. The voice acting ranges from average to mediocre for the most part. The companions are completely usless and for the most part uninteresting. They either do very little damage, or heal very small amounts of health. The story itself is fairly short. Though it does have some kind of cool moments. I do like the choice system. The story centers around your character being possessed by a flame demon. Throughout the game, you can either give in to the demons will(making yourself take on the demons appearance in the process, which has its benefits as well its consequences) or you can choose to fight it and keep your humanity intact. Thats about the only cool part though in my opinion. The story itself is not aprticularly interesting.

I know It says that I am not reccomending the game, but I do think Bound by flame may be worth a playthrough if you enjoy these types of games and are willing to overlook a lot of the rough edges. Its not the worst thing in the world. It certainly has its enjoyable moments. Just don't expect too much

This game blew my expectations for it out of the water. I honestly thought this game was going to be some maybe boring middle ware crap, but I was very surprised. The amount of features, like crafting, that they put into the game is amazing for the price of it. The story is not all that great, I didn't expect it to be, but the setting is.

It's like a dark but high fantasy setting with tons of magic and other things you'd expect from a fantasy setting. However, it's set apart by the design of the world you explore, the monsters and beings you encounter, the lore that has actual good writing and effort put into it, and just how it was made.

The gameplay consists of standard stat building and other such stuff, but it doesnt let you minmax or munchkin easily, or at least I wasn't able to. I was very satisfied with the combat and how everything played out in it, it was very unqie but not too different as to where it would be off putting to get into.

The characters are actually very well done, if a bit maybe 2 dimensional, but I'm not expecting an epic out of a 20 hour game with a few replays possible. That reminds me, the game is surprisingly replayable, what with at least 3 or 4 endings, multiple followers and choices with them, and how to build your character.

The game itself is linear and soemwhat short, as I said about 20 hours. Though, as I also said, I didn't have super high expectations, so that may taint my opinion a bit. All in all, I thought how the game presented this was perfectly acceptable, I enjoyed every bit of it.

Overall, this game is worth it at around $30 in my opinion even though I bought it on sale at around $20. I am very satisfied with my purchase and hope to see more games like this in the future.

I fired up the game only for the Steam cards and forgot it open. I tried it later on and it feels a bit reminiscent of Dark Souls. It's rather simplistic, with silly names, dialogue and story (Your character is called Vulcan and at some point complains that he's burning, yeah, great name choice), however it's enjoyable if you don't have anythign else to play. The cutscenes are unskipable though, which can be annoying.

A massively underrated middle budget RPG. It's ugly as sin and the voice acting is laughable most of the time, but underneath that hideous mug lies a game with well executed tactical combat, a myriad of available companions to choose from, a fantastic crafting system for customizing your equipment, and one of the most underappreciated scores in recent years.

There's no guff. No nonsense. No BS. Bound by flame is a bit of simple, well executed game design that was simply made on a limited budget and with limited time.

Its a fine pick if you see it on sale.
