Patch v0.3304 - Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays, ArkCoNauts!

Our festive bug smashing continues, with another round of fixes and changes. We will be taking some time off for Christmas next week to spend with family and friends, before coming back to dig in to another big content patch. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season, from our family to yours! <3

  • Physics calculations have been move to a separate thread. This fixes several issues with jumping, jetpacks, and collision that could occur at low framerates.
  • Fixed several issues which caused frame rate drops on some systems.
  • Creatures killed in a single shot no longer withhold Science XP in revenge.
  • ArkCo employees have been reminded of the difference between left and right and should be less confused about which direction to face when aiming up or down.
  • Fixed an issue where Nautilus and a couple other creatures were bypassing shields (They have our frequency!)
  • Fixed an issue where the cybernetics station art was spazzing out (Short circuit?)
  • Fixed an issue in multiplayer where some removed tiles would not update for all players (G-g-g-g ghost tiles? Zoinks!)
  • Brown mundo crabs will once again inflict damage if you make them mad (Silent treatment)
  • Fixed an issue that caused various sync issues between clients when loading chunks or worlds. (Communication breakdown)
  • Optimized various packets to improve transmission of creature and world updates.
  • Max Science XP is now updated correctly on the progress bar. (Blinded by science)
  • Fixed an issue where cryorod count would not update properly (My pod gets 40 rods to the hogshead and that’s the way I like it!)
  • Fixed an issue that caused some canceled quests to re-appear in multiplayer (I can’t quit you)
  • Laser Picks are no longer blocked by various non-terrain objects
  • Equipping a jetpack in the appearance slot will now change the jetpack effect
  • Creatures now see deployable turrets as valid targets (The guns… they’ve stopped)
  • The Skiff Pad now show the time remaining in multiplayer (Finally, a countdown)
  • The Codex and Enhancements hotkeys now open the correct tab of the Character Window (In your face, interface)
  • Fixed an issue where certain Anomalies could spawn creatures inside of terrain (hipster anomalies spawn everything underground)
  • Fixed an issue when placing objects such as the Command Center sent a warning message or pop-up window to everyone nearby instead of just the placer
  • Fixed an issue where some of Omegratron's attacks did not update player health bars (I’m not touching you!)
  • Omegatron's Orbs can no longer enter the safe zones (NSFW)
  • The resource and category select menus in the Crafting Window now close when the the Crafting Window is closed
  • Fixed an issue where players could craft the wrong items in tutorial preventing them from progressing (That’s how we learn!)

Additions and Changes

  • Players can now increase maximum science xp cap via upgrade platforms (The more I learn the more I CAN learn)
  • The Anomaly Circle effect has returned from the hidden layer to which it was accidentally banished
  • Added a healing effect when vehicles are being repaired
  • Restored the player NamePlates on MP servers (Hello, my name is Operative)
  • Extra Kit slots can now be unlocked via upgrade platforms
  • The Crafting Window is refreshed after learning a schematic. New schematics remain marked as new when closing and re-opening the Crafting Window. Selecting a schematic marks it as no longer new.
  • The quest to kill a random number of creatures now gives bonus time for each creature killed (Keep what you kill)
  • When merging stacks of items, the target stack will always stack up to the maximum allowed and any remainder will stay in the source stack
  • Creatures and other players no longer block the placement of background tiles
  • Science XP is now shown near the character's head instead of text in the lower left of the screen
  • Added Codex entries for the Penguin dungeon, DJ Penguin, and Tech Upgrades (Reading is FUNdamental)
  • The Outfitting Station now opens the Character Window when activated
  • Placeable items that can only work in a certain biome now show that on their tooltip
  • Base Mode now shows an outline around all tiles. The powered tiles are white and the unpowered tiles are dark grey.

ArkCo News - 12/13/14

We hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving, and safe travels over the holiday weekend! We're getting back into the swing of things here at Handyman, and digging back into our huge to-do lists. Since we hadn't had a newsletter in a month, I felt it was high time we catch up on all the goings-on. November was a very busy month for us, with one of our biggest content updates yet being let loose on all of you.

Overall, we were very happy with the stability of the patch, there were relatively few major bugs to deal with; the more systems and features you bring in at once, the more potential it has to break, so it was definitely a victory to have it all work well together. We still have a lot of debugging and smoothing to do from the content patch, and are continuing to work on the bugs everyone has hunted down from there.

Last Saturday marked the return of vehicles to the game (crowd cheers!) now that the refueling system works again, as well as multiple bug fixes and more smoothing and balancing. We got the HUD updated as well, which we know people had been asking for. No more guessing how many cryorods you have left! Santa also left another gift for our wonderful players: faster mining across the board. The speed was bumped up on all picks by 80%, which has definitely brought the holiday cheer to Edge of Space!

While all of this is going on, we're also looking ahead to our next mega-patch, coming in 4 to 6 weeks or so. We're at the point now where content is going to be much more frequent, and this next big content patch will definitely be a fun one. The team will be gone at times during the upcoming holidays, but in between we'll be working on things and preparing for an action-packed New Year’s for Handyman.

On the community side, we're looking forward to a very special Christmas event this year. We can't give too many spoilers, but let's just say this will be the first of its kind for the Edge of Space community. If all goes well there will be plenty more like it to come. We'll have our usual giveaways and forum shenanigans, but we'll leave the main event itself under wraps here in the lab for now. The event will go live Sunday, December 21st, and run through Sunday, December 28th. Watch the forums and social sites for the news as the event draws near!

As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you next time for ArkCo News!

O tej grze

Suit up as an operative of the Ark Corporation, sent to the farthest reaches of the universe in search of habitable planets to terraform. However, after the long space journey you awaken from cryosleep to find that your ship has gone way off course and is disabled near a strange new world. With no choice but to descend to the surface and figure out how to survive long enough to complete your mission, you step into the escape pod.

Along the way you’ll gather resources to craft armor, weapons, facilities, and vehicles to help you explore the world and conquer its aggressive inhabitants. Your base of operations will evolve from a few basic facilities exposed to the elements into a hardened fortress full of advanced technologies that let you accomplish amazing improvements to your equipment and alter the environment itself.

Be careful, though; almost everything down there wants to kill you, including fierce laser space sharks, artillery-toting polar bears, wickedly quick jetpack penguins, and even crazier horrors. Out on the Edge of Space, you must adapt or you die. Good luck, ArkCo Operative!

Key Features (Launch Version)

  • Open World Exploration– Dynamically-generated 2D sandbox set in the deepest recesses of space, explore randomly generated caverns, wormhole anomalies and dive deeper into the planet to discover valuable resources and other rare phenomenon.
  • Crazy Creatures – Hordes of enemies and epic bosses ranging from Artillabears, squid pandas, jetpack space penguins, and laser space sharks; not to mention epic bosses like DJ Penguin and Omegatron
  • Cooperative Exploration – Engrossing gameplay, built from the ground up, to support multiplayer focusing on cooperative exploration and combat with team-based tactics.
  • Advanced Crafting System - Using the power of science, craft advanced technology for weapons, gear and base constructions from basic resources
  • Loads of Armor – Ranging from stat boosting battle armor to quirky vanity costumes, craft armor to survive the changing environmental conditions and specialize in different aspects of mining, exploration, and combat.
  • Weapons – Create a wide-variety of dynamically generated weapons ranging from guided rocket launchers to Experimental Gauss Rifles and discover new advanced weaponry to expand your arsenal.
  • Research System – A new research system allows players more freedom to discover new areas of technology in exploration, combat, base building, and much more.
  • Command Center Management – Establish your central base of operation by creating the ultimate Command Center customized with defensive turrets, hangers and repair drones. Make improvements to protect yourself from the constant environmental changes like radiation storms and other anomalies.
  • PIOS (Power Input Output Systems) – A simple drag and drop tool, letting you design electrical systems as basic as powering a light or as complex as creating your own logic gates.
  • Pets – Create and collect pets that assist you on your epic exploration of space by granting defensive, offensive, or exploration perks.
  • Anomalies - Random world events both dangerous and helpful
  • Vehicles - Craft items from hover boards to massive mechs to safely explore the dangerous world
  • Terraforming - Conquer space by turning the land into a livable habitat
  • Continual Support – Regular post-launch updates will bring fresh new content

(Many features listed above are currently in the game but since we are still in Early Access some will be added in the future. Vehicles and Terraforming are among them.)

this game is getting a LOT of negative reviews and I see some same complaints-- No tutorial (There wasnt, there is now) - cant skip the tutorial (You obviously DIDNT read anything at all, did you?) - There's no content updates blah blah or theres not enough of X in the game yet... well I have been involved in a TON of early access projects (DayZ pops into my mind when people say "No content") and I would personally want them to re-hash and re-do gameplay mechanics before adding content, and this one has gone from having nothing but tiles, to having a power grid, to having a control system (Machines need command nodes to run) and more, and more content and bosses... went from having nothing but a few penguins with rocket launchers to terraria crossover bosses and random events... it is still early and the team may not be as large as you would like, but development is constant, and consistent-- meaning they arent working on other projects with early access money from this, at least not to the point its affecting development. Most complaints are people "I cant find ores" those people are used to easier games (Like terraria, which is fun, but face it, not hard at all) this game forces you to completely upgrade before moving much further through an exposure system (Go too low, die from the planets core radiation. makes perfect sense, but most people cry) and extremely tough enemies that dont take much damage from the starter guns.

All in all I am excited to see where they go with the rest of this project. As 2 out of 5 biomes are done as of this review, and countless systems still planned, and some tweaks to existing ones. Amazing progression system if you arent a crybaby.

TL:DR: Most reviews on this game are because people are stupid and don't read, this game is solid, and has constant updates and shows not just promise, but progress.... suppourt it if you liked terraria but it was too easy

This game is one of the good examples for Early Acces. The Dev team is really nice and are very present and working with the community. Constant patches and addet content keeps making the game get better and better and i don´t regret buying into this at all. The art style, music and ambient is just awesome and everyone who like this genre should give it a try.
Even tho it got Terraria content in it it is by far not a clone and got it´s own unique feeling to it as it is more focused on action and plays more like a metroid game when it comes to progression and gunplay.
A big thumbs up from me .

I've invested in one or two early access games but what I like about Edge Of Space is the fact that they frequently update the game. To me that's a plus and the Devs seem to be dedicated and involved. Alot of people may be unhappy because they want the full game immediately but I find the pace is good so far. From the little time I've spent on it the game has a great deal of potential to find its own niche among titles like Terraria or Starbound.

TL;DR: It's an early access game with a strong foundation that needs more content, a little tweaking, and polish.

This game just had a pretty big update from what I understand. Look at your review dates, if it is dated before Nov 24th, then it's not reflecting the game in it's current state.

I'll have a more detailed review once I log more hours.
First few hours:

-Tutorial is a little frusterating, got confused at one point and thought my progress was blocked. (Turns out I was trying to craft the wrong thing during it)
-Progress is not entirely intuitive yet.
-The gear grind is a little on the slow side.

-Stong basic mechanics.
-The one mini-boss fight I've been in was terrifying and fun. Tons of little critters coming after me in a cave putting out my temporary lights as they advanced. (If I didn't have the regen pack by then I probably would have died)
-Fun building mechanics (if not entirely intuitive yet)
-I made a jetpack out of dirt.

Something I'm unsure about but rates mention:
-Science xp, and these data modules: Maybe it's just because Starforge did something similar (and they did it poorly), but I'm wary of having to unlock recipies with xp and blueprints. This system could either make or break the gear progression in the game and needs to be handled well.

So, should you pick up this game now? I'm leaning towards yes. The Dev's seem dedicated and attentive to their players, and the game has a strong foundation.

In the first part of my review, I will point out, on the spot, that THIS IS NOT TERRARIA, nor will it ever be. Just as Starbound was seen as another rip-off of a loved game before it became famous, it's the same here. Terraria is less loved by the developers, and Starbound even moreso. The developers here are happy to patch any bug that would be found, in addition to being friendly and helpful, were someone to get lost or to ask for help.

The soundtrack in the game actually DOES give it the feel of Minecraft, what with the lonely venture and all, but it's not. The game [also] has a unique take on the 'RPG' aspect, with it not being the typical 'grind for hours and hours to get to the max'. No. You instead would get SP (Science Points) which are used for the creation of plenty of things, such as items to increase your skill in a specific area. SP is gained by killing things (as per RPG-like game) as well as destroying things, be it trees or some odd plant you've never seen before, though the amount varies.

Also, you remember in Terraria where you could feel safe at night, in your little cardboard underpants alongside your wooden sword? Not here. Go ahead; Try to survive the night in your first, second, or third armourset. You'll never live to see the sun! Speaking of 'living', it also has a reason NOT to die. You crash-land on some planet, as the lore goes, then you go on to set your small CryoPod up. Note, though, that even though said CryoPod keeps you from death for ten times, it doesn't mean you can waste them. It's quite a journey to craft up a small, cryogenic tube you slot into said CryoPod, which gives you one extra 'life', so-to-speak.

Of course, who could forget the tutorial? It's relatively in-depth, and it explains all you need to know to not die horribly the first time you set foot into the world. Now, with all these good things, what are the downsides? Well, the first, and probably most notable, is that the game is in Early Access/Beta, and has a plethora of features not-yet implimented (such as mercy invincibility after getting struck, which isn't as bad as you think, but can be kind of annoying), but even with that, it's still moving forward at a great pace, and, as I point out, it gets almost any and every bug patched up when said bug is first found.

Edge of Space is not a great game, I'll just put that out there. In its current state, the interface is clunky and confusing, the initial spate of gameplay is repetative and your objectives are unclear. If you're looking for something on par with Terraria, you'll be disappointed.
Why, then, do I recommend Edge of Space?
Because, beneath its rough and unpolished exterior, lies a surprisingly fun and enjoyable experience. The gameplay, while flawed, is enjoyable. Crafting schematics and unlocking new content is fun, although grinding for materials can be tedious at times. The art and sound design is gorgeous (actually better than Terraria, in my opinion). The devs are responsive and listen to community feedback. Updates are regular and often (in fact there's even a timer so you know when each update is coming!).
Edge of Space is a quickly evolving game and, while, it may be no Terraria it's going places. If you're looking for a polished product, you may want to wait a while before purchasing this one. However, if you're willing to put up with the bumps along the way, I think you'll find Edge of Space is definitely worth playing.
Edit: Wow a reply from one of the devs!
I'll address a few of the things here. My biggest problems with the interface are fairly small things, organizing the inventory can be a pain, how to remove/add background blocks was not well explained and threw me off for a while, and when clicking from another window back to Edge of Space I often end up accidently placing blocks I did not intend to place.
As for repetitive gameplay, I feel that early in the game certain crafting requirements are just too high. For example 20-40 biomass to craft certain items. Biomass can be difficult to get in large quantities early in the game, meaning you have to grind for it.
As for long term, I'd like to see more variety in enemies, there just doesn't feel like much variety. I'd also like to see more customization options implemented, dyes, paints, etc. More weapons and variety of weapons would also be nice as it's hard to find a weapon that suits my play style.
Overall I am very impressed and thank the devs for replying to my review! :)

So, while playing this game for the first time I noticed a few things that I disliked, despite the game being great overall. Minor things like mining taking a long time, the toolbar not being easy to change around, and the escape button not closing my windows. I commented on these things to my roommate. Today they were all fixed in the latest patch. Either these guys are psychics or they are wiretapping my house. Either way, great job!

I've put about 13 hours into it at this point, and I'd say that it's definitely worth it at the current sale price. It's obviously a work in progress so there are things that are in flux and there are tweak issues (finding particular types of elements), and what feels like a memory leak (not confirmed yet...the last hour was getting laggy and warping, but the twelve previous hours ran perfectly).

I admit I was slightly cautious about picking the game up for months because the art seemed a bit "fuzzy" (not as crisp as some of the other similar games), but didn't seem that way when playing...maybe it was an impression I got from early gameplay videos.

Gameplay is close enough to Terraria that you won't be totally lost; though there are a lot more items to craft and there's more of everything. The variety of weapons and the distinction of the armor, etc, are a plus.

The world is alien and more broken up than Terraria...morea bunch of floating islands, some of which are quite large. I haven't played it enough to distinguish layers and there is some environmental damage mechanic which resulted in the odd death when going to far down but is still a bit mysterious in its workings.

Monsters and combat are more complex and interesting. One thing I find interesting is that somethings are neutral under certain conditions and then hostile in others (sleep mode?). You will often be in a situation where you have to decide how you will engage because indiscriminate shooting may aggro otherwise neutral beasts or plants that will jump in your combat and make your day really bad.

There is a bit of silliness, but so far the majority of the game plays pretty straight...just had the occasional polar bear with jet boots thing but otherwise seems staple scifi.

So yes, I would recommend if you like this type of sandbox game and are willing to do your own research rather than have everything spoonfed in one guide.

<Note: Reservations below are describing the current gameplay experience I am having. They are just things to note and may be addressed tommorow for all I know. On the whole, I am enjoying the game and look forward to seeing it get the polish that will really make it shine.>

My main reservation is that, especially in such a "complex" type game with many concepts and crafting being such a main component, that documentation is sparse. Of course documentation is one of the last things put in a game but even the community is really light in consolidated guides (at least in English...there are other language guides that may be more fleshed out). This isn't a reason to not pick up the game but it will get a lot easier to play when you don't need to troll forums for basic game info (ie: what are dungeons, what do you need to go there) or how do you upgrade weapons.

Other more minor reservations include "Hmmm, I build this item and put it in my base...just what does it do again? Perhaps pop up tooltips for placed crafting stations or maybe an intergrated icon to jog the memory.

Ladders, or other ways to go UP besides jump packs.

Some sort of ablative heat shield/air bag for when you jump into an abyss that is many screens deep.

In the crafting menu, have another grouping "misc" for all items that don't fit under weapons or base items or any of the other crafting subgroupings, so that when you want to craft something you don't need to scroll through the "all" category to find it.

An interface to show you what items you can make in list form all on the screen at once (and the ability to hide items that are outdated). Sort of a tech tree at a glance.

The ability to choose how long info stays on screen before disappearing, and the ability to configure what is displayed. IE: I don't need to know xp as it accrues, but I would like to know when I ding a level in crafting what new recipies I had without looking through the browser.

I assume XP bar fills and you get no more? If so, maybe some sort of on-screen alert so you know to burn that XP instead of wasting time doing things with a full bar.

As far as bad Terraria parallels go, this game is actually pretty decent. I'd recommend it to anybody who wants an experience similar to Terraria or Starbound. Ok, So I have seen some users complain of the developers abandoning their game, this simply is not true. Now whether this is based upon Starbound (the developers are Chucklefish and have no affiliation with Handyman) it really is unfair to everyone working on Edge of Space.

So, what am i doing with this post? Im going to show you through my own experience and time with the game what it looked like when i started playing around januraryish up to now. Yes there will be two or three videos going to my youtube channel, No you are not asked to subscribe, like, etc this is purely for those that are looking for things that were added to the game and just general gameplay.

First off, were going to talk about where it was when i started. It was a barren game, not too much content. Few enemies and a fair amount of bugs. The intro screen was also completely different to what you see now. The music however is the same. Below is the first comparison video you dont need to watch much to get the gist. A lot of features are not there, The zoom that we have now, All the enemies you currently see, the headhunter dungeons are not there, the trees are stiff and there are not as many armours, weapons, and in general crafting stuffs as there are now.

This is Edge of Space, a game related to Terraria by some design only, well, and the fact that the guys at Handyman work closely with the Terraria devs because they are awesome!

Now take that and look at what is now in the game.

So Edge of space got a Huge update and there were a lot of things i couldnt get too that were added in the game, i doubt i can show every tiny thing but i shall be showing every possible thing i can.

YouTube™ Video: Assault Bears and Leaf Armor : Edge of Space : Part 12
Views: 6
Ok, so i finally got to a point to show you guys a bunch of new cool stuff and some stuff i never imagened i could show you! I found an assault bear...a bear with giant guns on it....yea!

What i mentioned earlier is in there, though not in this particular video. There are things however i did not count on ever being in the game such as assault bears (big bears with giant ♥♥♥♥ guns that shoot you) Anomalies which are random such as a mob of powerful creatures that will obliterate even the most well trained and armoured ArkCoNaught.

The starting zone is now a much tougher place full of stuff to kill and explore rather than an empty almost lifeless planet. That is not abandoning of a game. So please take this into consideration as well as the fact that the Devs are very active here on the forums, and even on the videos that people upload. They are happy to hear your suggestions and reflect on them and if it be deemed incorperate them into the game in some way. They are doing this to make the best game they possibly can and ill be damned if a few people take it away from them. As from what ive seen, the timely patches and fixes and contet additions Handyman is a very good studio

Keep in mind the game still needs fixing and updating as it is in early access/beta at this moment. I know people are wary of this, but, coming from experince these guys are working hard to bring us a fun game with tons of content and fun ideas. So before bashing and accusing them of stealing our money, at least look into the developers history and into the game itself as well as videos others do of the game to see if infact your bias is justified.

I'll say this much, It's not ready. Its alot like Starbound but it needs to add abit of a tutorial for those who haven't played Starbound/Terraria

Falling to your death has never been so fun!

Devs are super helpful, upadates and patches roll out regularly.
I wish they had a mini map but maybe later..
it is still in beta but so far the bugs have been minor.

Great game, just need's more added. Told my friends to wait before buying it though as it does need a fair bit of work. People have compaired it with Terreria but it's different on many levels. Will make for a great co-op experience once complete. One to watch.
