Update to 1.3.2053

We're pleased to release the latest version of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, including over two-hundred fixes and dozens of new gameplay enhancements. The full change log is posted on our official forums, but here's a taste of what we've done:

* Added "Font Size" to Graphics Options (changing this during play will empty the combat log)
* While viewing a mage's Spellbook screen, players can now switch to a priest character and the game will immediately switch to the Priest Spells screen (and vice versa)
* Spell scrolls that can be written into a spellbook for the current character now display a green-tinted overlay
* Non-friendly NPCs that are Blinded will no longer stand still; they will wander aimlessly until they are close enough to see someone worth attacking

9/10.
would have been 10/10,
if the Steam version included putting in a new disc every 5 minutes.

One of the greatest games of all time. The Enhanced Edition is still the same great game but with a few new companions and quality of life improvements, such as loot/item, chest/container, and character name highlighting when pressing tab, as well as a zoom function. The new companions are pretty nice. I played a lot with Dorn Il-Khan, the Half-Orc Blackguard, which is an evil and twisted reflection of the lawful good paladin, and I really like him a lot. He is an interesting character with a cool personality, and has an awesome class kit. He really adds a lot to an Evil party. The improvements and companions are not essential by any means, but they are nice. A lot of people complained about bugs when the EE was first released, but I'm happy to say that with the 1.3 patch, this has been eliminated. I played through the whole game and did not encounter any noticeable bugs. If you have never played Baldur's Gate, this is definitely the definitive version of the game, and the one to get. It's a 150+ hour game, so even at the full price of $20 you get your moneys worth for sure. If you have played Baldur's Gate, buy it on sale and enjoy a great excuse to replay a fantastic game.

Now this here is some old-school RPG goodness brought back to modern systems in a quick and easy package in the Enhanced Edition. Adding widescreen support, new characters and locations, it still remains the classic adventure as it ever was.

If you haven't noticed yet, this game, it's old, don't expect any shiny graphics or groundbreaking gameplay. Give it a chance though, it has tons of content, it retains its charm and the challenge that a lot of mainstream games nowadays simply do not provide. Many characters with their own alignments can be found to form wildly different parties, giving it replayability, and the multitude of sidequests and locations pretty much make it guaranteed that you won't get to see it all in one go.

The plot itself is alright, but maybe that's because I played the sequel first so I was already aware of the plot twists. I strongly recommend you start with this game before moving on to BG2, if you've never touched them, you're in for a treat. Especially since you can import your BG1 character into BG2, giving it a sense of continuity. You don't get to experience the sequel differently like the Mass Effect series kind of does if you do import your character, but the stats, name, etc, do carry over.

It's amongst my favorites due to the link it shares with BG2. I like BG1, but BG2 just blows it out of the water, making the original a mandatory playthrough. Get it.

The enhanced edition has made some slight improvements in mechaniks that really helps. They have also put in some stuff from BG2 which is nice. The new artstyle is horrible though and the new characters are lousy.

The character creation is the thing they really improved upon and I love it. Finally the ranger can be a good archer, finally I can use 2 swords, finally paladins are... well, paladins are still useless.

If you never played this game before there are some things you want to know. This is a game with low levels. Your mage will be über-helpfull but wont be a source of epic power. You will have to gett a team of six characters which by themself wont do much, but togheter will rock. The gameplay in this RPG is focused on strategy and balance between the characters in your team. This is no hack&slash no brainer. Not to say that it is major brainer, but still. It is a game with good story, funny sidecharacters and entertaining gameplay.

Overall, this is still one of the best RPG ever!

If you're the kind of person that enjoys having to use basic algebra in order to calculate the best build for your RPG characters, this game is for you. Unlike most modern RPGs there is no voice-acting so you'll actually have to read dialogues. You also have to actually read quests entries to figure out where to go and you need basic orientation skills. All in all I would say that most people born in the late 90s or 2000s should probably stay away from this game because they lack the cognitive skills required to play this game. If you do however have basic scholastic skills, this game is quite an enjoyable RPG experience that requires meticulous planning and use of tactics to beat it at the higher difficulty settings. Most of you are probably too stupid to appreciate it though.

Forgot how much I loved this game!

Now, this is not the type of updated/enhanced version that changes what the game is. Not in the least. It is still very much the same old school Baldur's Gate I first fell in love with. If I were to issue any complaint, it's that the AI is still incredibly dumb and it took only 10 minutes of having NPCs to realize, "Oh yeah... that. They didn't fix that at all."

But you do notice all the little tweaks they added and despite its age, the gameplay is relatively smooth, once you et the hang of the controls.

I remember the first time I played the original, I took a Half-Elven Magic User and let fighter NPCs take point. This time, I decided to be a bit more adventuerous and took a Gnomish Fighter/Illusionist. I was a bit disappointed to learn that it wouldn't be the classic AD&D Illusionist, but a modified Magic User, but in terms of game play for Baldur's Gate, that actually works out quite well.

I'm looking forward to a bit of a game break, but my next one will definitely be the enhanced Baldur's Gate 2.

Ok, for the quick summery, read this part. If you want more in depth, read past this. I've played Baldur's Gate since 2003 or so finished the game twice total. Only five years after it originally released in 1998. This game is basically my childhood. Over all, this game is much like the original with additions of a new class and the half-orc race of Baldur's Gate 2 and now, there's even more customization in the stats. Over all, the story is the same and enhanced on with new characters. If you're into hard-core RPGs that will last you days, buy this game. It's well worth it. But if you want something that has less time investment, don't go for this.

Now for in-depth

Character Customization: Now, this is an old game, this isn't Skyrim. Your character customization won't be ranging from weight to dirt color. The customization is in the stats: Strength, Dexterity, Charisma, Willpower, Intellect, and Constitution as well as what weapon proficiency you have from one handed sword to katanas, from two handed swords to halberds and from bow to sling. Then if you chose a caster class what spells you have from the beginning. You can chose your class from the traditional: Fighter, mage, thief to things like cleric, specialized mage, multi-classing, ranger, ect. Then race (which has different stats for each) from human, dwarf, elf, half-elf, gnome, halfling, half-orc, ect. The only physical customization of the character is in the portrait, gender, hair color, skin color and clothing major and minor colors. That's it.

Gameplay: Now, the gameplay is DnD combined with RTS. You control your party of 6 max, including your character (who, if dies, is game over). You can pause whenever to cast spells, which is turn based. I.E. It could take two turns to cast a Heal Minor Wounds spell or a turn to cast a magic missiles or even five to cast a lightning storm or summoning spell. You can loot items from weapons (which CAN and WILL break by the way. So ALWAYS have a spare!) to armor, to enchanted items which you'll need a mage or the money to identify what they are (don't auto-equip these assuming they're better. They might be cursed items!) If you're a fan of DnD you'll love the gameplay.

Story: Without spoilers, the story is amazing and in depth. On disk it spanned over 5 disks and a sixth for the expansion, so the game itself, for the day, was MASSIVE. Games now are 8-12 hrs, possibly a tad more to finish the game, maybe even more than that.. If you want 100% and to actually finish this game successfully, you'll need about a week or two. So prepare for time investment.

Graphics: This game was made in 1998, don't expect beautiful sights like in Assassin's Creed or Mass Effect (I know, two different genres entirely, but best comparisons I can thing of). The graphics are decent enough and good for the time it was made, but the story makes up for the graphics. If you want eye candy, this is the WRONG game for you.

Size: The game spanned over five, even six disks if you had Tales of Sword Coast. So the game is long. The size of the world is rather decent, numerous side zones, towns and cities from where you start in Candlekeep to Baldur's Gate itself, the world is almost all open to exploration. every building with a door, every mine shaft and tent. As long as the cursor changes to a wheel for travel or a door, you can enter. Might not get a good welcome, but you can enter.

Difficulty: The game's difficulty CAN be set, but even on easy it's fairly challenging. Not much more I can say on this factor.

Over all, this game is well worth it and a great buy.

I've always loved classical version of Baldur's Gate. Enhanced Edition brings all of the memories back with full support for modern day high resolution screens. Changing the Infinity Engine to newer version makes the game so much better with additonal BG2 items. New characters make player excited, despite the game being 16 years old.

It also works on Linux despite not being marked for Linux in SteamPlay.

Terribly buggy rerelease of the original. Whether on Beamdog or LAN, it doesn't seem to matter; the games crashes frequently. It also seems possible to duplicate items using the 'quick loot' feature, which is just pathetic. I've played the original version in multiplayer over the network and did not encounter these issues.

What a shameful waste of money. Both on Beamdog and when using Hamachi, the game constantly crashes in multiplayer. Let's consider what this "enhanced" version should deliver on, considering that Baldur's Gate was already a successful, fully contented game:

1. Ensure the game runs fluently on today's computers.

That's it. This is all the developers needed to accomplish. This is the only compelling way to bring *value* to a great game which was already made years ago.

They failed, yet they feel this product is salable. They don't deserve a penny until they fix their crappy work, which considering that it hasn't been done yet, is probably never going to happen. Do not buy this, you'll likely have better luck running the *original* game.
