This was a game I grew up on in my early years and have always enjoyed ever since. It at its core like a dungeon crawler except the dungeon is actually a expansive section of the world called the Sword Coast. You can recruit party members from a vast variety all around the world with new additions in the "Enhanced Edition" changes which actually provide some interest to this over the original game counting any additional fixes they would have. I could continue on with this little section of praise but I feel it best that I leave the rest of this up to you, reader of reviews. I hoped calling you out like that would jolt you slightly to get you a slight bit more interested but just like the tootsie pop owl, the world may never know. Well probably just me. This is besides the point, bad marketing off, actual reasons for you to read this on. The original game that this version "enhances" I would probably recommed much more so than whatever this game is to be called. With recent updates as you may have heard (or read, reading is more common over internet) there has been troubles with the multiplayer aspect, which I haven't encountered as often as other people but still enough to warrant it an actual annoying nuisance. The visuals for this game I would actually say have been downgraded since the original game as it seems that only the npc's/characters have had updates to their style but not the background/land that you walk upon. This takes the feel of immersing into the game and lore of it a bit harder as it feels almost like it reminds you that your out of place (which your character, rest assured, is probably in the right place. Unless you fight big scary things as low level, then your place should be on the road running). The UI of the game was much better in the original game as this one seems to give the impression that everything is in the right place on screens like the Character Record screen (the head), but in reality its the same as taking all your files in a folder and putting them into their own folder in there. The original UI for that particular screen would seem a bit too much at first but after a second glance you're able to find any info you need rather than sifting through tabs to find the one tidbit you deem relevant. There are more than likely quite a few other niche's that can be disliked that I'm missing but the same can be said for the good aspects. Overall the reason why I recommend this is because there is an option to revert this back to V1.3 if you go to Steam Library > Right click BG > Properties > Beta > V1.3 . For those of you who are new to the series I would recommend it as is as you wouldn't have a previous version to compare it to. Well that about wraps it up I guess as I have run out of things to ramble on about. I would say not sure how to end it but the truth is I'm never really sure so heres a link to the store page (which is above you but you can click on it if your lazy about scrolling. This appeals to some of you I'm sure)

And well I guess here goes the TLDR(semicolon)

TLDR;
Go read it you lazy computer user. This does bank on you using computer but lets be honest, most people use computer and reading reviews on a phone means your probably into steam a bit and if your a bit into steam you should be READING what is ABOVE THE little paragraph of TEXT right here. Welp, laziness kicking in so I'll go lay down and pet a cat while you buy a game because I've said so so many times. What are you waiting for. DO IT.

I would not recommend buying this from Beamdog. Just buy the original version and mod it, you won't miss much.

This game series has always been a favorite of mine. I bought the original version when it first came out and have played it many times through-out the years. Most people would assume that an "enhanced version" would be a better version. That couldn't be further from the truth. I struggle to see any actual enhancements which make this game worth buying and the numerous bugs overshadow any actual features that were added.

The hours I've logged so far to this game have all been multiplayer, so my experience is written from that point of view only. I remain impressed at how this company took an original game which ran great and introduced numerous frustrating, sometimes game breaking, bugs. More than once now, I've had to use cheats to fix my game so that its playable again for things like disappearing items and entering required game zones which crash the game every time. At one point all of my saves would no longer run. I had to wait for an update which took a month to fix the saves so that I could play again without starting over. To make it worse, it seems like every update introduces "exciting" new bugs. There really isn't much worthwhile in terms of enhancements.

It has been a test of patience to continue playing this game with a friend. We have quit playing before because the crashes and freezes became too frustrating. I wonder how much of my logged play time is actually just from restarting the game because of a game crash or bug. My faith in Beamdog hit a new low when I read about what they did with their DragonSpear expansion. Hiring a developer who has an admitted agenda of forcing her politically correct views into games is not okay. She changed established character backgrounds from BG1 in the expansion just to meet her view of how characters in this fantasy world should be. I won't be buying anything further from a company that is so disrespectful to such a legendary game series.

Here is a list of some of the bugs that I've encountered in multiplayer.

- Game freezes for multiplayer friends if the main character dies. All players must completely exit and restart game to fix.
- Can no longer enter the Friendly Arm Inn without crashing
- Items have disappeared from inventory more than once
- Saved games won't load, forcing you to use an older save
- Friends in multiplayer are VERY frequently randomly booted
- UI sometimes randomly disappears altogether
- Many random crashes to desktop which don't appear to have a repeatable cause

The second best game ever (best being BG2^^), remade for newer PCs. Definitely a must if you like rpgs. This has what modern games often lack: Lore, depth, multiple-choice and epic game time.
It has enough script for a good book trilogy and covers most big legends within DnD (Drizzt, Elminster etc.)

A must have!

So traveling deep into the world of D&D but ona computer, well this has to be played to believe! I am an avid "D&D" enthuiasit and all i can say is playing this has opened my eyes to what is plausable with modern times.

You can take on a whole party of your creation, or have the ingame characters join you, and with some of the characters backstories out of this world I cannot praise this enough.

Built back in the 90ies there are some general bugs and glitches that happends and you can say this is part of the added "charm" but then again when your playing it can cause the old fashioned rage quits! The path tracking is redicilous!

I must reccomend this to anyone who enjoys DND as its story line is tradition to a T. Anyone wanting to take a break from Final fantasy, or Try something new, prepare for an indepth world and a storyline like no other, unearth the mysterys that lie within.

Call this a prerequisit to divinity as that is only where you can head from here!

40 hours for a complete playthrough.

It's not as "enjoyable" as any modern RPG game (as Pillars of Eternity, for example) but totally enjoyable anyway :-)

Aside from the devs not honoring settings like not giving you max rolls on level up etc, it's decent. I'd still pick the original with mods though. Linear difficulty doesnt belong in AD&D. So on that fact alone; would not recommend.

Aged but still brilliant classic RPG. Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and the expansion has plenty of tweaks, widescreen support, higher resolution textures and improved spell animations to enhance experience for HD screens.

FYI, I bought this on Steam after buying it from Beamdog when it originally came out a few years ago, and I haven't played my Steam copy yet which is why my played hours are so low.

Baldur's Gate is a game that I have been playing since 1998. It's an incredible game. This is a solid update, plays well, no more loading screens, and incorporates many quality of life improvements that you previously needed mods for. There are new classes and kits to use, and now there is a brand new adventure in Siege of Dragonspear.

It's true that out of the box, the game looks different after the latest patch. However, the changes that Beamdog made, particularly the ones that change how the game looks, are customizable and can be turned on/off (like the sprite outlines and other UI changes ). It takes less than 2 minutes of checking off options in the gameplay menu to make it look like the original. As for bugs, the only ones I experienced were minor (e.g. a map marker with the wrong label).

I recently played through the OG campaign and Siege of Dragonspear, and I had a blast. The original campaign is still great, and most of the popular mods like the NPC project have stable versions that work with the EE version of the game. Be advised that the Steam version of the EE may cause you to jump through some hoops to get mods working.

As for Siege of Dragonspear, it was fun. The story bridges the gap between BG1 and BG2, and overall, it does a good job, particularly when you remember it is bookended by such great stories. Tonally, it has to walk a line between the colorful adventure of BG1 and the dark journey of BG2, and there are several attempts to show your character dealing with their heritage, their accomplishments, and the relationship they have with the public at large. There are some NPC and player responses that may make you think, 'My Bhaalspawn would never say this' or 'this character would not behave this way', However, there are some really great moments with many of your favorite series characters (canon party in particular) and you are sure to enjoy at least a couple of the new NPCs (I thought M'Khin and Schael were interesting, could not stand Glint, YMMV). There is banter between old and new characters, which can range from annoying to charming, but this is usually due to personal preference with NPCs.

There are plenty of quests and interesting locations, and even a few new gameplay concepts thrown in as well. I'm glad Beamdog took some risks with the gameplay as it provided some awesome moments, like being chased by a lich through it's lair while racing to destroy it's phylactery, or sneaking by a sleeping dragon, or exploring a ruined temple of Bhaal, or managing the titular siege, planning the attack with the coatition generals, and then leading the assault personally.

If you enjoy CRPGs like Divinity: Original Sin, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, or Pillars of Eternity, give this a game a shot. If you are a BG veteran looking to play again, give this a shot before going back to your CD copy.

What happened? Only bought this on steam to play with a friend. I have the original hard copy which looks 100 times better than this pos. "Enhanced"? Thought that would mean it would be better than the original. Not even close. Looks like crap, plays like crap, that is if you can even play it. Constant crashes, freezes and just a plain buggy mess. What a crime it is what they have done to this great game. Beamdog is it? I would sugest avoiding anything these butchers work on like the plauge. You should be ashamed of yourselves for what you have done to such a work of art which was this game. What a crying shame. Thinking of buying this hot mess? Don't. Go buy Pillars of Eternity. Anything but this mess.

If you want to play with 3 or more of your friends, don't get it. Won't let them all load in. Tried with 5 and two or three would aways disconnect right after we finished creating our characters.

I really wish i could recommend this game, I do LOVE Baldur's Gates but i would recommend the original over the "Enhanced Edition" for the following reasons:

- UI changes made the UI very VERY glitchy.
- The game will suddenly crash every now and then.

I would like to add that i did beat the Enhanced Edition twice, both single and multiplayer and i noticed that the UI and crash problems happen mostly in multiplayer, the single player was somewhat "bearable" to play through, but you are paying for both modes thus i recommend getting the original and modding it to work in BG2's engine with HD resolution support.

The original Baldur's Gate is one of my favourite games, second only to its successor and is a game any rpg fan must play. Due to its art style for a game that came out in 1998 it still holds up well today. Graphically this game still looks beautiful due to 2d painting-esque backdrops and thirdperson isometric viewpoint.

The gameplay also has an incredible amount of depth to it and the combat is very tactical and varied depending on the class you play and the party setup you choose. The game is also from an era when games were unforgiving and actually provided the player with a challenge. The combat is similar to Dragon Age: Origins where it can be free-flowing and action oriented but it is highly recommended that players take it slowly and utilise pausing to setup properly between rounds during combat.

The game being built upon the ruleset of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons has a lot of depth to classes and the classes will all playout and feel very different which offers a lot of replayability ontop of just choosing and adhering to different alignments.

Also due to the game being built upon AD&D and being set in a D&D realm the game has an incredible amount of history and backstory in there that the world feels real and is incredibly dark and gritty which ties in great with the dark tones of the main story.

Without spoiling too much of the story it starts with very humble beginning and quickly thrusts the player into a world descending into turmoil with bandits and bad guys wanting to kill you at every turn you must uncover the sinister plot that is unfolding and discover your own dark heritage in the process.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this game although I will warn that there is a lot of reading involved and that the combat is designed to played slowly (unlike diablo and games of its ilk) and very tactically but for those that love a game with a great story this game is undoubtedly one you should play.
