FEZ v1.11 Patch Notes

Hey there!

Right on time (sort of) for the Summer Sale, here's a juicy update for FEZ. The Windows version is the first to update, Ethan is working on the Mac and Linux updates as I type this; shouldn't take more than a day.

Without further ado, here's the changelog :

  • Screen will no longer pillarbox, only letterbox, whichever resolution is chosen. This enables arbitrarily wide resolutions (multi-monitor)
  • Added borderless fullscreen toggle in video settings menu (workaround for AMD flickering bug)
  • Added power saving mode (-ps), also accessible through Launch Options dialog. This mode may make the game run at a slightly lower framerate than your hardware is capable, but significantly reduces CPU usage, which makes it preferrable on laptops or hardware susceptible to thermal throttling
  • Fixed rare case where waterfall would never open
  • Added fix for old savefiles with the telescope double-item spawn glitch
  • Sound effect volume now affects map navigation sound effects
  • Added additionalDeadzone entry to settings file, and made gamepad thumbstick deadzone wider by default
  • Separated X and Y look invert based on player feedback (old option affects both on first run)
  • Removed OptimusFix from Steam launch script, since it caused more problems than it fixed
  • Merged in new version of music streaming library which should lead to better performance
  • Music streaming CPU usage fix applied to Mac and Linux versions as well
  • Garbage-textured blocks no longer rendered in perspective view
  • Fixed credits entries
  • Clock tower level has more permissive fall damage
  • Traversing levels downwards with flying cheat is easier
  • Fixed bright edges on some 3D art objects
  • Fixed minor collision issues

The "power saving" mode is not enabled by default, it's a Launch Option, though I highly recommend you try it out. You may drop a frame or two, but in combination with V-Sync, I think it's the nicest way to play the game right now.

It's not a small patch; let me know in the GetSatisfaction support forum if something broke. It's been tested pretty thoroughly though.

BE AWARE: Before I tell you, what I think about this game, and (hopefully) will make you want to have it (because after hours of gameplay, I have come to the conclusion that this game is one of the most underrated, unerestimated games ever!), let me tell you first what FEZ is NOT:

1.) it's NOT your common plattformer
2.) it's NOT over when you reached it's end
3.) it's NOT what it seems to be - there IS more to meet the eye!

What can I say? This is the most beautiful, creative, inspiring, mind-blowing gaming experience I ever had with a game that was meant to be one of those titels you play "in between"!
You can look at it as a plattformer/puzzle-game but that just tells you the obvious as if one would say "at the moment I'm in front of my PC screen!"

You can just enjoy the game and it's puzzles, and surely reach the end, having had a good time with plenty of fun! But - if you take a second look at the surroundings, the lovingly architected characters, places and little things, waiting to be explored, you can't help but feel that there is yet more to all of this than meets the eye! You will find that nothing (literally: NOTHING) was place by coincidence, there's no such thing as "by sheer chance"! First, you may think that the "dialouges" are nothing but symbols neatly arranged. But can you fight the feeling that there is more to this?
In other words: if you are looking for a game that can take you to another level (both game-wise and mentallly spoken) and leave you with a REAL experience - here it is!

If you've ever wondered if there's a hidden world within games, you just found the game that will give you proof!

As for the puzzles: they reach from "ezee as hell" to "challenging and f*+++*g difficult", but IMHO never unfair! The soundtrack is somewhat awesome though never gaining too much attention!

Get it - you won't regret it, I promise!

I am editing this review to make my point clearer.

I will start again as in my previous one stating that FEZ is actually a very easy game; and I think I have ground to say that, since I have obtained the 64 cubes without any guide or spoiler (other than being informed about the red cubes so I wouldn't waste my time with them).

If you watched any trailer and/or played the game, you know about the mind-blowing mechanic of "rotating & projecting" (R&P) which is very, very ingenious and has potential for a lot of fun. Potential, I said.

In FEZ you basically have to collect Yellow Cubes (32 max), Blue Cubes (anti-cubes, 32 max) to unlock doors. You unlock the ending after collecting 32 regardless of colour. There are also 3 "easter egg" Red Cubes which do not count towards anything.

To obtain most Yellow Cubes (and thus complete the game) you need nothing but this R&P mechanic, which is essential to reach some places. After few minutes you get the grip of it and it gets old. It gets easy, too easy; it is just interesting, not really challenging.

The hype is about the *other cubes*.

Several Blue Cubes are trivial as well, some of them are fun... but... *none of them are about the R&P mechanic*. To unlock these cubes here you usually need to press some buttons in a specific order, usually in a specific room. The "challenge" resides in finding the said sequence, but finding them does not depend on the R&P mechanic either, and at this point you'd be just playing a regular platform game where you use R&P merely to reach different rooms.

Whereas some combinations are readily available in their own room, some others require hints hunting throughout the FEZ world - and that's the only hard part of the game. Searching for patterns and glyphs throughout the world - which is very confusing to navigate - in a sea of things which could be a hint for a puzzle or just decoration... no problems if you have a photographic memory or a memory just good enough to remember "where did I see these symbols before?" but otherwise you would need to be paranoid like myself and take a screenshot of 50% of the rooms in the game just to make sure you will have those symbols available in case you need them sooner or later. Some of them can be bruteforced as well, which can be far more enjoyable than travelling in FEZ's map.

While you might enjoy hint-hunting kind of games, even that is not clever: the hints are straightforward and require very little brainwork after you actually find them (I enjoyed cracking the counting cube though). You just go "there and use it" - no clever use of the R&P mechanic either. That is definitely not what I expected from this game here.

Lastly, Red Cubes. Not even funny. By analogy, I would say that the red cubes are equivalent to the following riddle:
"_____ ____ have I, two below and ___ in a ____; Then ____ ____ one kills, ____ . What is my name?"
This is not a clever riddle, its just incomplete. In the same way, there is nothing clever about the red cubes. It is okay though since they were supposed to be "easter eggs", they do not progress the game and the devs were not insane enough to put them as achievements.

All in all, the game is interesting, but it doesn't deserve the hype. The awesome mechanic was not properly exploited by the devs.

Allow me to start this off by saying that, while I do recommend this game, I did not personally enjoy it myself. While I'd consider myself to be an avid fan of puzzle games, this one just didn't seem to click with me. The first hour or so were very enjoyable for me, as I quite enjoyed the mechanic of being able to change the perspective of the game itself. It allows for some very interesting and honestly diffiult challenges. However, my main problem with the game is that there seems to be no sense of direction. From the moment you acquire the ability to spin the world, the game then says, "There you go, now find these things. Good luck!" This, for many people, may be seen as a good thing. It gives off an intense feeling of, for lack of a better word, ADVENTURE. For me however, I found the world too confusing to navigate and far too large to keep track of. Nitpicking aside, this game has great pixel art, it's really quite astonishing how beautiful the game looks at times. The world-shifting mechanic works perfectly, providing an intense feeling of accomplishment when a puzzle is solved. There are "warp gates" at the ends of areas to help you find you way back to the closest hub-world. Sprinkled throughout the areas are secret zones that provide extreme challenges for these objects called anti-cubes. FEZ in a fantastic game, and if you'd like to go on an adventure where the only limits are set by your puzzle solving abilities; ten dollars is a steal.

Now if only Phil Fish wasn't such an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Fez is an indie puzzle-platformer originally developed for the Xbox 360’s Xbox Live Arcade service, but is now available for PC. The game was developed by Polytron Corporation. It is a labor of love birthed by a small team headed by the passionate Phil Fish, some of the struggles and tribulations facing the game can be seen in the wonderful documentary Indie Game: The Movie. Trap Door helped co-publish the title with Polytron on both the Xbox 360 version and PC port. The 360 version is a critical darling and has received high praise, but the game has been maligned by some issues. Does this PC port fix some of those issues and successfully recreate the magic of Fez or does it end up having a variety of issues on its own?

One day all that seems important in the world is sleeping in late and hanging out with friends or jamming on a sweet drum kit. Then the next day, some guy with a funny hat and an eye patch drops a letter in Gomez’s mailbox. Now he has to meet with the elder, who spouts non-sense until the sky rends into bright lights and the town disappears. A cube materializes and that is weird because they do not exist, everyone told him that the world was only full of squares. Yet here it is, in all its golden luminescence. Do not call it a cube though, Gomez because that is not its proper title. Nah, refer to it as the Hexahedron. Be prepared though because it is about to lay give off some sweet powers. That fez ain’t for show, that thing will give him the power to shift space into another dimensions. Gomez, now can look through a third dimension. But this power came with a price because the Hexahedron exploded. The world seems to fade away, but Gomez just wakes up in bed like everything is normal. Except for that fez. Now it is time to save the world, buddy. At least, that is what Dot says and it is a hypercube, so take them words to heart. Find the 32-cubes and put everything right, Gomez!

Fez’s story features the elegance of older 8-bit games from the NES generation. The days when the princess was in another castle and it was not trite and contrived. When all some guy needed to save the world was the chance and opportunity to do it; oh and a sword or a fez because it is dangerous to go alone. There is a particular humor and style to the writing in Fez that hits all the buttons of nostalgia while feeling new and not simply a love letter to older games. Never resting only to be about its mainly conceit, Fez throws in ancient civilizations, cryptanalysis and other clever twists to add subtleties to the mythos and world of Fez.

Gameplay in Fez is about exploring the various worlds that create Gomez’s universe (which he learned quick is much bigger than he thought) by solving puzzles, ascending platforms and collecting cube bits, cubes, and other secret goodies. The foundation of the gameplay hinges on a very simple yet deep mechanic of shifting perspective. Gomez (thanks to his stylish fez) can manipulate the perspective of his world 90 degrees either left or right. By doing so, he can change the layout of his world and creating platforms or means of advancement that are not available to him before. This shifting will help him also solve puzzles or open up secret doorways. While it is an easy concept to get into and grasp, the mechanic becomes deeper as the puzzles become more invovled and difficult. For example, placing four cubes on glowing platforms is not simply about mimicking on symbol on any of the four perspective to the level, but shifting perspective so the cube mimic all four at once. Or to open up a pathway with a bomb, it becomes necessary to switch perspective quickly so that it reveals a pathway to a new door and another cube or world. The mechanic is brilliant and delightfully challenging and deep at times.

The graphics in Fez are gorgeous. The world pops with so much color and a great attention to detail in the pixel art. Gomez has a very iconic look and the animations give him a ton of personality. Each world has a great look, layout and wonderful details to bring them to life. Even among worlds with seemingly similar layouts or looks, there is enough subtle differences that make them exciting to explore and look at. When shifting perspectives, the changes to the topography of worlds are visually compelling. Fez is a pretty game in every dimension. The game features an incredible soundtrack by chiptune composer Disasterpeace. There are a ton of memorable songs between the numerous worlds of Fez. Part of the joy of exploring new areas was the opportunity to hear what new musical pieces would be the backdrop. It evokes the spirit of what makes video game music great.

Fez for the Xbox 360 has had many criticisms thrown at it for crashes, bugs and glitches and the lack of patches for the game (which is a whole other complicated issue). The PC version plays smoothly for the most part, there were some issues where the game crashed a few times, but nothing more annoying than simply having to restart the game. However, when first booting up Fez on Steam and playing for about an hour, the game crashed during an auto-save and deleted all game save progress, which was frustrating. Luckily, not much was lost and it allowed for the ability to start over and explore a different path. These are minor issues though and the game runs pretty well, so do not let that issue scare anyone off from buying this great game.

If you've ever not purchased a game because you don't like the devs or publishers (EA, Ubisoft) then you would be a hypocrite to buy this. Developer Phil Fish calls his fans misogynistic and tells us we are 'ruining' gaming. Don't buy this on principle, there are games much the same that are just as fun and aren't run by someone who would see the death of the gaming industry if it was his choice.

FEZ is one of those milestone indie titles which proved there was still innovation to be found in the 2D Retro Puzzle Platformer cesspool that is the indie development scene. While the mechanics are solid and the art style is charming, this is what can be said for many a competing title which commercially failed. I think FEZs’ rise to popularity had a lot to do with good timing, but the very expertly designed “3D” world rotating really made this game stand out to me. Rather than being only a 2D platformer, you can rotate the entire world 90 degrees around your character. The best part is that this mechanic is not just put there to add another screen, but instead, changing perspective actually allows for things that were once a wall to become a platform, and objects miles out of reach to hover just over your head.

While I disagree with the creators petty childish attitude when handling PR issues, I think FEZ as a game deserves to be distanced from his actions. As an entry into a genre that is saturated beyond reason, FEZ is a wonderfully fresh take on the 2D Platformer.

This is a game where I'm kind of annoyed how I can't vote something between recommend and don't recommend. On the one hand I absolutely adore the world. On first look it's just your ordinary faux-retro game, but I love how the world is "alive", random critters flying around, the changing day-night cyle etc. I also really like the concept, 2D platformer that has an original "spin" on the 2D genre, also I like how you have to manage to avoid a chaos, that "freezes" the game, because why not, that's faux-retro crap that I love.
But. The actual gameplay I just can't get myself into. I've played only two hours with this thing but I absolutely got frustrated by it. First of all it is hard to track your progress, I have no idea if I can't progress from a certain stage, because I still haven't found something, or because that's it. I understand that there is the world map, but I found it clunky and most of all hard to navigate. I would really like either some kind of simple fast travel, or some clear indication that I should hang around somewhere some more until I got everything. I can't really describe what exactly frustrated me, but somehow I think it was - weirdly enough, I know - the open endedness of this game, I have no idea where a stage starts and where it ends.
I was also fustrated by some jumping puzzles, that involved tiny spinny platforms, that was hard to jump to, easy to fall down from, and not to mention they spin around messing my perspective of where exactly I was planning to go in the first place. I know this is not the first game with jumping puzzles, and I'm guessing these were not the hardest jumping puzzles in video game history, but somehow it was just not "fun" for me, and I play games for being fun.
For personal enjoyment, I would really give this thing a barely 3 stars out of 5, but since this is steam, I can't honestly recommend it. Check it out if you have really good reflexes, or love 2d platforming and you are into randomly and kind of aimlessly exploring a world.

Yes the game is pretty and yes is has some interesting mechanics, but for me, the game got really boring really fast. After you start the game there really isn't much development to the mechanics. You will have to go back and forth to the same areas a few times, so if it's not challenging after playing a while, it won't get much worse.

FEZ is one of those game you have to play. I recommend 2 playthroughs, one without guide, exploring alone and enjoying it. When it becomes impossible to progress, start again with a guide in order to find all the secrets.

fez is the single most amazing indie game ever. now i know, Phil Fish made it and we all know that he is a jerk, but we kinda drove him to that by our nagging for him to finish the game. So, the game in itself should be highly paraised for it's amazing mechanic, using 2D, change perspective into 3D and back changing the visible layout, making something closer or further off. the characters and soundtrack are amazing as well. this game with all it's cute characters, funny story, amazing mechanic makes this one-of-a-kind game a spectacular masterpiece. my rating 10/10

Seriously one of the most frustrating and rewarding games I've ever played. Sure, you can beat the game. But the real fun is to 100% complete it. There's so many puzzles and little nuances to the game that make it that much more enjoyable. 5/5. 10/10. 100/100. Buy this game and play it like there's no tomorrow. It's fantastic.
