About This Game

The Stanley Parable is a first person exploration game. You will play as Stanley, and you will not play as Stanley. You will follow a story, you will not follow a story. You will have a choice, you will have no choice. The game will end, the game will never end. Contradiction follows contradiction, the rules of how games should work are broken, then broken again. This world was not made for you to understand.

But as you explore, slowly, meaning begins to arise, the paradoxes might start to make sense, perhaps you are powerful after all. The game is not here to fight you; it is inviting you to dance.

Based on the award-winning 2011 Source mod of the same name, The Stanley Parable returns with new content, new ideas, a fresh coat of visual paint, and the stunning voicework of Kevan Brighting. For a more complete and in-depth understanding of what The Stanley Parable is, please try out the free demo.

Funny, surprising amount of diversity, and short. Good game but don't spend more than $5 for it.

This is a tough game to review. If I could give a mixed rating I would. I can't though so I had to give it a negative rating because I feel it leans more that way.

Pros

Excellent concept
A lot of thought clearly went into this game
Legit funny
Excellent narration
Fun for about half an hour

Cons

Fun for about half an hour

I have a number of issues with the game. I like the idea of trying out and puzzling your way to different endings but there is no sense of accomplishment for finding something new. More achievements would go a long way for this game. A different achievement for each ending would be perfect. As it stands right now you have no idea how far along you are in the game or if you've found everything. This would be fine except the only way to keep going in this game is to keep going back over and over to the same areas to try something new. You may think you have a good idea for something to try but you may have to spend 5 minutes getting to that point (5 minutes doing something you've already done before) just to check it out.

An option to skip certain dialogue would be great. Also the ability to have your character sprint would be nice as well. Skipping to certain areas would be wonderful. I understand the developers probably deliberately left these functions out of the game to keep their theme going but it's just too much. I found myself having ideas on things that I'd like to try but couldn't stomach going back and repeating that section of the game all over again just to test out my idea. It turns out speeding up that process somehow, anyhow, is a requirement for my enjoyment.

I'll attempt to be vague with this next part as I don't want to give any spoilers. There is a certain area in the game that makes it look like you must have an option for a different ending. They do everything they can to make you feel that way. It has been designed to make it look like a puzzle that can be solved. However, it turns out to be nothing. Without achievements you will never have any idea that this is a dead end. The only way you could ever know that you haven't missed anything is by reading a guide.

Anyways, there is too much unrewarding, repetitive backtracking. This seems to be a game designed for acheivement hunters and completionists. Without looking stuff up though you would never know how much of the game you've seen or completed.

This game is one of the weirdest and funniest experiences I ever had.
To explain what is it about is to spoil what is going to happen.

So, I will try to describe it without ruinning the surprise.

You are Stanley, a boring office man, and you begin in your boring office.
You have a first person perspective, and then... well, you will hear a narrator that will talk according to your actions. And about your actions, they are meaningfull, to do something, to do the opposite, or simply to do not do anything will also affect the plot and the reactions of the narrator and your path.

This game is very short, but has a lots of endings and to discover what "would happen if..." gives it a high replay value. Also it is fun to watch your friends playing it as they may discover something you didn't know.

And about the voice acting, it is one of the best I heard.

I love the creativity on this one, how it may combine comedy but at the same time create an atmosphere of mistery and suspense.

You have to try it, do not let others tell you what happens, you really want to find out by yourself. If it is on sale do not hesitate at all and get it.

"This is the story of a man named Stanley. Stanley worked for a company in a big building where he was employee number 427...

Get comfortable, the endings are different but the intro will always be the same."

You play as Stanley and follow or derail a not really great story. The story is nonlinear as you listen to or disregard The Narrator.

I highly recommend this game but I really don't but The Narrator is holding me at gunpoint and I would suggest buying it but really don't because The Narrator will be after you too.

Have fun!

There once was a man named Stanley,

Who people considered so manly.

But the truth must be told,

He was not very old,

And was quite particularly gangly.

What Stanley liked most was buttons.

He pushed them like some kind of glutton.

He did it all day

In a meaningful way,

But his brain had long ceased to function.

Which is why he is in this parable,

And lives an existence quite terrible.

And if you are not strong,

And keep playing along,

You too will become quite unbearable (x2).

A walking simulator done right. A game that's extremely aware of itself and the player, and uses its meta narrative in clever, inventive and enjoyable ways, unlike 90% of indie trash. Humor, horror, drama - it does it all and does it well. Has surprising amounts of replayability.

One of the few games to truly make me laugh out loud; the way the Narrator responds to your actions (or lack thereof) is just genius!
Whilst the game may be short, it is eminently replayable to discover all the different routes and endings.
Thoroughly recommended!

It's worth a few dollars, you'll get a laugh out of it, but the $15 regular price on here is ridiculously overpriced for the time you'll spend in game.

If you like snarky narrators and adequate planning for players deviating from the main path, give this one a go. The game's limited in its replayability, and by now, there are enough LPs to have seen everything. If possible, go in blind, but it's otherwise a fun game to try out. It being a sale at the time of writing, you should pick this up regardless.

Note: if, like me, you played the original mod back in the day, you'll get an even bigger kick from the game, but I would not recommend you going back to play that now. Find a video for a little extra as you explore.
