To my expectation-- and delight-- the gameplay was very similar to Ace Combat games that predate Assault Horizon.

Zip around in fighter planes armed with 60+ missiles, maneuver to shoot down other planes, bomb targets on land & sea, avoid missiles, and protect assets in escort/protection missions.

I personally didn't care for the Enhanced Reality System or [Assistance-]OFF MODE, and did not use them outside of the two missions that absolutely required the player to use them.

The game seemed to favor the 3rd person camera. It was the default view. I prefer dashboard/cockpit views in my air combat games, and OFF MODE forces the camera to a 3rd person perspecitve. Kind of an immersion-breaker there.

Disappointingly, this means it is impossible to perform a manual stall as a tactical maneuver in the first person view.

A rather major complaint I have with the cockpit view is that it is missing the pitch/roll and bearing indicators on the dashboard HUD. Instead, it is completely blank! This requires the player to actually use the artificial horizon and compass on the instrument panel.

While this may seem like a good idea for immersion, they are hard to quickly read at a glance and are different on every plane. That's appropriate for an in-depth flight combat simulator, not a more arcade-style flight combat game like HAWX. Even then, the HUD on the dashboard would display that information for a pilot.

Additionally, airspeed and altitude are displayed on-screen anyway, so it's not as though they left out the pitch/roll and bearing indicators for immersion. So this seems more like a mistake than an intentional game mechanic. This was not fixed in HAWX2, from what I've seen in screenshots.

Thankfully, the game has a "flying camera" perspective similar to Ace Combat's default view, which displays pitch, roll and bearing in addition to airspeed and altitude.

The plane variety was more than adequate. Overachieving, even. For instance: The SR-71 'Blackbird' is available, but no missions require its specialization; Strategic Reconnaissance. Though I suppose it has no place in any flight combat game, what with being an unarmed spyplane that was effectively replaced by satellites.

The story was rather lackluster. No character development of the wingmen, no fantastic superweapons to conquer, and the final mission didn't feel like a final mission at all. Maybe this is just Tom Clancy's flavor of "real fiction", or maybe Ace Combat's strangereal world events set my expectations too high.

Overall: TOTALLY DECENT, and the best Ace Combat clone I've played thus far. However, I found it rather difficult to not constantly compare HAWX to Ace Combat. In fact, I dare say that my single favorite thing about HAWX is that it made me decide to whip out my PlayStation 2 and replay its Ace Combat games.

A fairly good arcade flying game. Great fun to play co-op (when it works). Graphics and sound all work nicely together, and the assistance mode switch can enable you to perform some really cool stunts in the air. In this mode you get a cinematic camera view that shows off your piloting skills (or lack thereof). There are also plenty of different planes to unlock and weapons to choose from.

If it's cheap enough and you are into the genre, give it a go.

Nice plot & scenery, easy control and missions make HAWX a "nice time-waster flight shoot-em-up", not a really a flight simulator, if you search for one you must look elsewhere.

One of the most amazing childhood games I have played.

Truly a fun game if you have a joystick to play it with.
Many hours were killed with this game, and still it wasnt boring.
Though I never finished the game, its one of the best games in the Tom Clancy's (rip) series.
Hopefully Rainbow Six Siege can break that barrier and become my favourite Tom Clancys game.

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X
Arcade-style aerial-combat game. The game has plenty to offer for single player, but it doesn't offer much in the way of competitive multiplayer content.

From a distance and up high in the altitude, the environments--which are created with real satellite data--look beautiful. Natural landscapes and expanses of water are incredibly lifelike, and city skylines are nicely detailed. But if you fly too low, the illusion is shattered. The planes are the game's stars, and each one is modelled realistically with great attention to detail. Light bounces off of wings, afterburners glow with blistering heat, missiles launch in clouds of smoke, and explosions serve as a gorgeous reminder of just how much power you have at your command.

PROS:
+Visually, the game looks nice, mostly.
+Realistic planes and environments (from distance and high altitude only).
+Great, action-packed dogfighting
+Experience point, challenge system, stats, and unlocks help out keeping things interesting.

CONS:
-DirectX 10 very unstable on Modern Windows OS (Running in Windows Vista Compatibility Mode solved my crashes).
-Poor porting from consoles.
-Low replayability value (especially if you played and finished the game on Hardest setting).
-Keyboard and Mouse controls have a steep learning curve.
-Poor voice acting.
-Uninspired mission design.
-Typos on the subtitles.
-Limited multiplayer modes.
-Ground textures look ugly up close.
-Planes handle mostly all similarly.
-Planes are flying VERY slowly (something you wouldn't expect especially for a arcade-ish game).
-Friendly AI is weak (you're better of handling every battles yourself!).

OVERALL:
Tom Clancy’s HAWX is very close to being a great game; it’s just missing a few of the intricate pieces that create an enthralling experience. As it is the mission design is lacking, the combat is unimaginative, and the multiplayer is shallow.

RECOMMEND:
If you love arcade-sim combat games, sure give HAWX a try! As it is today, the game is pretty cheap so if you don't like, you won't spend too much! But I did played better games before and you may look at other alternatives to suite your aerial-combat needs!

RATING:
6.5 / 10

Ubisoft is known for their DRM, However i haven't noticed any problems with H.A.W.X. The game does not have to start from the uplay interface and the game is a solid good game. Some functions in the game are abit off if you ask me (like the assistance off mode or the ESM mode).

Players that loves the Ace Combat series should be check out the game (Videos, demo if possible) before buying it imo. Its a good game, it's just not Ace Combat good.

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. was heavily influenced by Ace Combat series. Unfortunately, creators decided they want more serious approach, which led to generic mission types (escort this, defend that) instead of craziness of Ace Combat.
Graphics still holds up good enough when you are in the sky (planes are gorgeous), but textures of terrain near ground is so bad, you'll try to maintain your altitude high enough all the time.
H.A.W.X. features leveling up system, which unlocks new planes and loadouts for them. But after finishing game on hardest difficulty with all "fun" challenges (aka kill "x" enemy with "y" weapon) you'll get only to level 27 of 40. And will stop there, because multiplayer community is pretty much not existent after all this years.

Overall, it is very far from the best games in this genre, but still enjoyable experience if you are open to forgive some flaws.

A simple arcade combat flight sim this game does what it should do and that is provide you with a lot of fun, making you feel like you are the best damn pilot in the world and punnishes you when you manage to get over that edge.

Worth playing with a hotas settup and good for a few hours of fun and more. If you are looking into these games buy this one as the second one is not on the same level.

A fun game, with challenging missions and realistic dogfights.
Graphics are a little overwhelmed by today's standards, but still offer a satisfying experience.
The story has a good plot to some point, however follows the MURICAN standards
Multiplayer with friends can be really addicting considering the huge variety of aircraft and weapon types.
Overall, a definitely must-try game.

Revvin' up your engine
Listen to her howlin' roar
Metal under tension
Beggin' you to touch and go

Highway to the Danger Zone
Ride into the Danger Zone

Headin' into twilight
Spreadin' out her wings tonight
She got you jumpin' off the deck
And shovin' into overdrive

Highway to the Danger Zone
I'll take you
Right into the Danger Zone

They never say hello to you
Until you get it on the red line overload
You'll never know what you can do
Until you get it up as high as you can go

Out along the edge
Is always where I burn to be
The further on the edge
The hotter the intensity

Highway to the Danger Zone
I'm gonna take you
Right into the Danger Zone

Effectively Ace Combat by Gaijins. From the get-go there is alot H.A.W.X has to offer: a fantastic selection of planes, full campaign co-op and broad support for joysticks, controllers as well as any regular mouse and keyboard setup. The problems weigh in however where H.A.W.X tries to be different to it's competitors, namely in implementing the "Assitance off" feature which allows the player to do such nebulous maneuvers in the air like "air drifting" all while under an incredibly uncomfortable camera angle as well as the Enhanced Reality System (ERS), a waypoint feature which is hamfisted into one of the game's later missions. All in all, it isn't a bad game but H.A.W.X certainly could of been better without these features and they hamper on the experience endmost.

HAWX is not a flight sim. If you want that, try DCS: A-10C Warthog or DCS: Blackshark. This doesn't mean HAWX is a bad game, however. It's simply more of an action game than simulation, but it does have some sim aspects to it.

Many people will tell you to get a flight stick to play any flight game and usually they're correct. HAWX, however, plays just fine using the mouse-and-keyboard or even the keyboard by itself. You can even issue voice commands if you have a microphone hooked up.

There's a very short learning curve to the game and you can play the entire campaign co-op. There's also player-vs-player multiplayer options, as well.

You unlock new planes and weapons by getting promoted. You get promoted by playing missions (including non-campaign multiplayer matches) and earning points.

If you're a stickler for accuracy and a complex flight sim, you'll probably dislike HAWX. If you can put that aside, however, you'll find a very fun game to play.

Oh boy. What a game.

First, let me say, THIS IS NOT A REALISTIC SIMULATION OF AIR TO AIR COMBAT. Also, online matchmaking is pretty much dead (as far as I know), if thats what you look for in a game. What you do get is one of the best arcade flight combat games ever made on the PC (Ace Combat: Assualt Horizon isnt any good). This game does the original Ace Combat games from 2, up until Zero a favor, by bringing the goodness of arcade combat flight games to the PC. And boy, does it do it a whole lotta favors.

Without going much into the story, incase you want to play this, I'll give you a simple summery. You are a pilot, you shoot things, you change sides due to money, more things happen, you shoot more things, and then you finish the game. All during the while, you have an incredable amount of joy, heartbreak, and what not. But maybe the question lies in your heart, "What if I want to play this with my mates?" Do not worry, as the game does allow online co-op, so you and your friends can use F-22 Raptors and breeze through the game like there were no problems.

On the topic of aircraft, this game has a variety of them. You get a F-4, MiG-21, all the starting aircraft that you expect. But as you go through the game, new planes become available to you, many you probably never heard of. Do you know what a
A-12 Avenger II is? What about a FB-22 Raptor, or the Lockheed YF-12? Do you really know all these without waltzing over to Wikipedia? Yes, this game specializes in prototype aircraft. The game also has all the normal aircraft you need, such as the F/A-18 Hornet, F-14 Tomcat, Su-27 Flanker, A-10 Thunderbolt II, etc.

The game takes you from AFHGENGESTAN (deserts ahoy), to the scenic Appalachian mountains. Each place you go has different things to accomplish, such as destroying a complex with an ECM field that'll fry your plane in an instant, or strafing ground targets endlessly. And you can do this, all with the Assistance Mode off. This mode is what sets apart HAWX from other games. With this, you can do many, many cool manuevers that'll give you the upper hand on enemies. You can perform many VERY, VERY tight turns and ever fly backwards in some planes. That in a flight game instantly makes me enjoy all the tricky things you can do. The only complaint is that the story is kinda short, but this is fixed with the inclusion of Free Flight.

All in all, the game is very fun, and very worth it the cost, IF you buy it on a sale. It is ok if you pay full price, you'll get your fix, but buy this on sale please, you be happy you did.

This game is a solid 10/10

4 out of 5, a fun arcade flight combat game. This game is pretty fun, though too short. There are soo few missions that you will likely never use the same plane twice, as one is suited best to each mission. The missions are usually pretty quick and easy. This is a fun game to kill a little time with. This game is not very realistic, if you want realistic then you should be playing DCS World. The sequel to this game is TERRIBLE!!! And the new Ace Combat Assault Horizon is TERRIBLE!!!! That said, this is the best arcade shooter right now. The Janes arcade shooter is ok, though its an xbox dlc port.

Not bad, but I have the feeling that I'm doing the same thing over and over again. It's not just with this game. Sure, I'm not really into arcade flight sims so it could also just be me. But... there's just no variety in missions. You fly, shoot down enemies (or evade them), that's it. Doesn't sound all that interesting, right ? That's because it's not. It's not a bad game, just don't expect something great. There's still fun to be had if you lower your expectations.
