2nd April - [UNSTABLE] Update Notes

It's been a busy month and a half since our last stable update, and now it's time for the unstable branch to be updated in preparation for the next! Before I get to the actual patch notes, please read this big warning text:

As of this patch, the 'Home' planet feature has been replaced by planet bookmarks and direct teleporters. EXISTING CHARACTERS WILL LOSE THEIR HOME PLANETS!!! Make sure to write down your home planet's coordinates or leave your ship in orbit so that you don't lose track of its location.

Now, on to the good stuff!

  • Players can now save planet locations in the cockpit navigation interface
  • Select a planet, then select 'Add Bookmark' to bookmark it
  • Select a bookmarked planet from the list to set it as your navigation target

  • Players can now place and register teleporters on planets
  • Interact with a teleporter to add it to your list of registered destinations, which you can return to from any other teleporter
  • Can also be used to teleport directly to party members
  • Find Teleporter Cores in the world
  • New Outpost store, the 2-Stop Teleshop, lets you use a Teleporter Core to create various types of teleporters to suit your style
  • Breaking a teleporter destroys it, but refunds the Teleporter Core
  • Outpost store includes a teleporter you can register for easy access to the outpost

  • After logging out, players will be returned to the place in the world where they left (rather than back on the ship)
  • Mission dungeons will persist for 10 minutes after all players have left, allowing continuation of a mission after dying
  • Mission dungeons now have teleporters at the entrance and exit, should help clarify how and when to leave
  • Players can no longer be attacked while teleporting
  • Players can no longer initiate another teleport while teleporting
  • Teleport cinematic while destination world is loading

  • All player ships should now be inhabited by a non-combat pet corresponding to the character's race, in one of a wide variety of color options
  • Pets will investigate held items and various ship objects
  • Pets can be fed and will develop preferences for certain foods
  • Terramart now sells several pet-related items
    • Food Bowl to keep your pet fed while you're busy adventuring
    • Pet Ball for your pets to play with

  • Ancient Gates now have another destination, a huge and ancient ruin
  • Gives a few clues about Starbound's overarching plot... so mysterious!

  • NPCs and ground monsters now jump accurately and reliably find paths across complex terrain
  • NPCs and ground monsters are much better at avoiding and escaping liquids
  • NPCs and ground monsters should become stuck MUCH less often

  • Can be found underground on Radioactive worlds
  • Includes various unique items and a new furniture set

  • Reworked Apex, Avian, Floran, Glitch and Hylotl name generators to be much less (but still a little bit) silly.
  • Changes to melee weapon responsiveness, damage sounds and visual feedback. Lots more of this coming in a future update!
  • Ranged weapons now have varying accuracy depending on the weapon type, quality and rate of fire
  • Player energy now refills much more rapidly and has a shorter delay before regenerating
  • Various improvements to server architecture which should greatly improve server performance and stability
  • Various improvements to internal handling of Lua API calls which should greatly reduce CPU usage, particularly in areas with many monsters or NPCs
  • Many small improvements and fixes to objects throughout the game, including updating 3d printing costs in preparation for future additions to the game's economy
  • Scroll bars can now be clicked and dragged properly
  • Fixed several bugs with codexes. Codexes are now retained across universes. Existing players will, unfortunately, have their codexes reset.
  • Moons are now generated with solid cores to help avoid falling out the bottom
  • Several improvements to grass placement, also add underground ceiling grasses to several biomes
  • Fix bug where music volume changed in combat
  • Several small improvements to AI interface
  • Removed the annoying levitation status from random status pods
  • Added optimizations and cyrillic character fixes for Hobo font. Thanks to user dsp2003 for this fix!

Existing characters and universes are safe (aside from the codexes and home planet, as listed above). However, a few of these changes may require a new universe or new planets to take effect. [STABLE] 17 February 2015

These changes have now been pushed to the stable branch, along with a few other small fixes. Enjoy!

It’s been a busy week and a half since our last bugfix update. While the artists have been forging ahead on content for the next major patch, we programmers have been going through lots of user feedback, stomping out bugs, and cleaning up a few annoying problems that have been on the To Do list for too long.

  • Crafting and inventory windows can be closed by pressing the key or activating the object that opened them
  • Crafting (and other interfaces) close when you are no longer near the object
  • Interacting with objects now requires the player have line of sight to them.
  • This means that you cannot sit in chairs, flip switches, or use crafting stations through walls.
  • Add race-specific craftable storage lockers, accessible from the Robotic Crafting Table.
  • Fix bug with Erchius Horror causing beams to deal damage in areas different from the visual beam positions
  • Fix bugs with Targeted Blink which allowed blinking through walls and could result in players being thrown outside of the world. Any characters previously broken by this bug should be usable again.
  • Fix bugs with server banlist functionality
  • Fix ‘Not allowed to discard stack when locked’ crash when moving items to/from containers
  • Fix bug causing servers not to display error messages for some crashes
  • Support user specific username/password login for servers
  • Bow tooltips now display damage and energy cost
  • Container tooltips now display storage capacity
  • Penguin Bay will now tell players to come back later if no quests are available
  • Most beds allow players to sleep more comfortably, without armor
  • More changes to human armor designs, some old designs now available as cosmetic items
  • Capes now craftable on spinning wheel
  • Foods that poison/burn you won’t do so for as long
  • Fix appearance of tents while in use
  • Fix hand positions of a few items
  • Make Red Dye craftable to facilitate quest
  • NPCs spawned on the ship from spawner objects will have clothes again

The huge winter update is here!

After many months of work the winter update has finally been released. It contains more changes than we can list but below are some of the most obvious updates.

  • ***Universe and Worlds***
  • Sectors have been removed, so all stars are part of the same map
  • Star and planet types correspond to difficulty levels, giving players access to progressively more extreme environments as they advance through the game
  • Added oceanic world types including tropical and arctic oceans, toxic and magma planets
  • Added rare Barren and Asteroid worlds with no monsters for large scale building
  • New biomes
  • New surface and underground mini biomes
  • Many changes to surface and underground terrain generation
  • Improvements to background parallaxes and sky coloration
  • ***Ships and Navigation***
  • Player ships now include an AI avatar specific to each race that gives access to the player’s techs, missions, 3D printer, and a variety of ship-related commands
  • Each race’s ship has its own unique set of upgrades, giving players much more room to expand as they progress
  • Fuel costs for travel have been reworked. Moving between planets within a system is now free, while jumps to other systems require fuel in proportion to the distance traveled.
  • Coal no longer powers spaceships! Instead, they can use either radioactive ores or the new Liquid Erchius Fuel that now appears in Moon biomes
  • Many improvements to the Cockpit interface, which now indicates more detailed planet information including weather and environmental hazards

  • The universe now has a civilized hub containing shops, quests, and other services. This is where players will find quests, missions, and ship upgrades which allow them to advance through the game

I like this game, I really do. I won't explain why because that's not something I'm good at. I'm much better at describing what's wrong with something than what's right with it; and there are plenty of positive reviews that capture what's good about starbound you could read to see what's good about it. That said, there is a lot wrong with starbound, both with the game itself and with its developers (Which is just as important, especially for an early access game.), and I can't in good conscience reccomend it thanks to that.

I'll start off with the developers, and development in general. First and foremost, development is far too slow. We were promised, and I quote, "Lightning fast updates" in the early beta stages (Which if this isn't early beta I don't know what is). To be fair, they've been better about this recently, but it wasn't that long ago that we were waiting months for an update for the game, and getting nothing we could actually play. Plenty of promises that they were working, with unrelated updates about things such as the new office puppy that seemed to contradict that in between, but were never actually given anything tangible for all this work. When we finally did get an update it overhauled the game massively, changing progression and combat entirely at the least, if not more. Personally, I thought it was for the better; but plenty of people dislike the new update. Some people don't even like the game anymore, and I don't think this is the end of updates like this so be warned that the game could change drastically (again) before release.

Speaking of the recent update, one of my biggest complaints about the developers came about just before it when they were revealing ship AI's. Most of them were good, but the Glitch AI.... well, it was an abomination. It was a horse with breasts. Human breasts. Naturally, a lot of people hated it. But despite all the criticism the devs refused to change it, or rather said they wouldn't. Later they revealed they were trolling us all, which wouldn't have been so bad if not for what happened before that was revealed (Though personally devs trolling their fans, if they were indeed trolling and not just covering for their bad customer relations, already doesn't sit well with me.) Now, I never personally saw this because I don't go to the Starbound forums much personally, but I hear from quite a few people that there were people banned from the forums for criticizing it. Peacefully mind you, not "OMG DA HORSE AI ♥♥♥♥ING SUX CHANG IT OR ELS", but rather people making fair points about how terrible it looked. Again, I never personally saw it happen, but I'm inclined to believe it because I did see threats to ban anyone who criticized it anymore in the main thread about it if memory serves correctly. So these were people not just banned over fairly criticizing a design choice. They were banned over criticizing a design choice that was never even going to be implemented because the devs were just trolling us. I don't think I have to explain how bad that is. Also, this is more of a minor gripe; but there were several monsters (Among other things I believe) that were picked to be in the game because they were winners from a community monster creation contest. As of now, not a single trace of any of them is to be seen in game despite how long development has taken so far, which bugs me personally. And on the topic of how long Starbound's development has taken, the answer for how long would definitely be "Too long". As an example, Terraria was, to my knowledge, not even in development for a year before it fully released in a polished state, and further polishing was done after release. Starbound on the other hand has been in development in some form or another for years and is in a quite unfinished state that, in my opinion, is nowhere near as polished as Terraria was in months. From everything I know the development teams of both games were of a comparable size and they had comparable budgets, if starbounds wasn't possibly higher due to people who liked Terraria gaining interest in it when Terraria officially "stopped updating". If I'm wrong about that though, please say so. Starbounds development is surely slow, but no need to accuse it of being slower than it is.

Speaking of Terraria, Starbound is comparatively bland at least world wise. Planets have very little depth and, provided they're the same biome, are all pretty much the same. Biomes themselves don't have the depth they did in Terraria either. No unique enemies (Possibly because, excluding bosses and enemies in certain missions there ARE no unique enemies. More on that later), barely anything different about them resource wise except that Erchius Fuel can only be found on moons, or bought in the outpost (Relatively cheaply I believe) which is much less of a hassle than buying it, and oil is mainly, or possibly exclusively found in deserts, and no unique music. It would basically be what would happen if you took all the unique elements out of Terraria biomes, made it so the tiles could be a different color for each world, and made it so that instead of walking to them you teleport to them. This makes exploration rather dull.

Monsters are all randomly generated. Their parts, their attacks, everything. While this sounds like it would be interesting, it really isn't. The best way to explain why I think would be a comparison. Take Terraria (I know, I like using it as a comparison. It's the most similar game I know of though, so bear with me) where all the enemies are designed to work together. Zombies distract you while demon eyes swoop to hit you, or vice versa. The Demon Eye distracts you with how hard it is to hit to let the zombies hit you. In goblin invasions warriors attack you head on, archers support them, mages teleport inside to attack your NPC's, forcing you to divert your attention, or goblin thieves open the doors to let projectiles fly inside while they take your stored gear. There's a lot of synergy purposefully designed in. With randomly generated monsters this is extremely unlikely to happen. They have random attacks that are placed randomly, the chance that two monsters on the same planet have complimentary abilities are near zero. Crafted weapons (Beyond some of the early tiers) are clearly superior to found weapons, you'll never find yourself using a weapon you looted; which while a small gripe tend to have ridiculous names as well. Ever wanted a sniper rifle called Miss Dudebro? No? Well too bad, that's one of the possible randomly generated weapon names. Compare this to, again, Terraria, where looted gear tends to be clearly superior, as it's unique and you had to search for it, often the looted gear also has unique abilities with crafted gear only becoming superior in late game, and often requiring looted gear to craft it. The latter is true in Starbound, but having my sword shoot a projectile is not worth the 20 or so DPS it trades.

The factions and races in game also really aren't that well fleshed out. Only Apex, Florans and Glitch have settlements. Humans only have a couple of dungeons, and the Hylotl and Novakid have nothing that I know of. Understandable for the Novakid, they were only just added in. But the Hylotl have been around for a while. Speaking of the Novakid, they really look nothing like the star-people they're meant to be. They look more like goo-girls. I'm not complaining though, personally I like Goo-girls and was actually pretty excited when I realized that, but I'm sure not everyone agrees with that.

I believe I've hit all the main points here. Again, I'm not saying it's a bad game, I do like it. Just be warned, it definitely has its issues. If you want to see what's good about it I reccomend you browse the positive reccomendations.

I am currently the owner of the biggest multiplayer community of starbound.
And Gosh, since this game released, developers always acted like multiplayer didn't exist, no stability, crashes, exploits, ridiculous resource usages and more make a real challenge both run a server and play the game on multiplayer.

However i recommend this game. I saw pretty dumb negative reviews, from complaining that the game crashes / lags and that they wiped saves on last update.... you are on the wrong steam section then.

Development isn't fast, but this developers are committed to this game, i prefer them to take their time doing it right than rush it and end up on something poor for everybody to play. Side of them made the mistake of give dates, i believe you would agree with me on that.

They need to focus more on make the core features they have solid enough and not fell into the temptation of add shiny new items/gear constantly it's pretty much what i would point at the current status of starbound. But i think this game still has a lot of potential for its future, even if it releases without all that firstly intended to have on, it's said to have a post-release team to maintain updates to the game, so the 1.0 doesn't mean it ends there.

So just have patience and have good hopes for this game future, it isn't abandoned. :-)

Every second of playing the game is worth it, And once you start understanding and going deeper into the game it gets even better. It's worth supporting unless you're just going around disliking every review avaliable. First impressions aren't usually surprising but, Give it a chance. You might just say it's like most sandbox games of this genre, Digging, Mining, Building a house, Gathering resources and killing things, but, This gives it a little spark. Every race has their own Style, Side of their story and Beliefs. You play as you wish but know you still are playing as a character that dislikes this or, Likes something more than this or, Lives in something like this, etc. You'll follow and get onto it pretty easy. It's not a must but it's for the roleplay experience, That is if you begin liking the game and want more of a kick.

If you think they're just releasing an unfinished game for the money, Think about all the paywalling apps there are. I think of unfinished games as "A taste of what it could be" rather than "An excuse to sell underveloped products only for money"

Besides, I could consider it done.
And a very enjoyable experience.

The new update (Upbeat Giraffe) Is good and all but over the winter they removed the hunger bar, made breathing a little to easy, and asteroid fields have no use anymore. I am all for not starving to death but, I mean really I like the whole you need food to survive and you have to work really hard just to get better items, Now theres some pretty cool quests but even that doesn't balance out my pros and cons. On a side note, I like the fact your ship is now highly damaged and you must repair it. But noting that, you have to dig down into a planet that has atleast a molten core, Which lets not forget the fact that you cannot dig through an entire planet, so that there is no molten core, but then must go to an air ridden moon where alien pig ♥♥♥♥' attack you and you get a permenant 02 kit on your character. Then since I dont have a great pc, I cant even fight the boss without being lagged out of my ♥♥♥. So now 2 of my friends are flying me around to different planets and I have to ask them for resources. Add back the survival features is what I want from ChuckleFish. Please.

Starbound is a really awesome 2D based game. From my current playtime on it, I've seen multiple aspects of a "good" game, from it's infinite planets, a huge list of items, quests, and that it's still not a finished product. +1

Starbound.. This game had me playing for more then 160h.. I enjoyed my time so much :) the game is awesome it self and I hope there will be more in the future! :D I recommend this game so hard.

This game is awesome! I love it, but unfortunately you will expect minor crashes and bugs. I have experienced just 2 crashes only but other than that I'm doing just great! You can explore new Galaxies... Stars and more! Each galaxy has there own solar system and there is a lot of stars I can tell from that have their own system if you can just zoom into it! I plan to explore ALL OF THEM... or get bored... xD But hey! This game is fun and brings out the adventure. Challenge: Complete all the quests, visit all the planets and upgrade everything and your ship :). Just note this is still in BETA.

I'm going to preface this by saying that this is an early access game. It does not represent the final product, and should not be considered as if it's a finished game.
Starbound is a really good game. It's fun, and will last you hours on end. You should probably know that this game is basicly Terraria, but with spaceships. Terraria was already a pretty good game, but I should go over a few differences.
  • The charecter creation allows for multiple species, including humans, Apex, Avians, Florans, Glitch, Hylotl, and Novakids
  • There are multiple planets and solar systems to travel to
  • There is more advanced weaponry
  • You have a mining laser
  • The biomes include adrid, desert, forest, grasslands, jungle, magma, moon, savannah, snow, tentacles, tundra, volcanic, crystal, flesh, tar, and eventually there will be arctic and ocean biomes.
  • There is an outpost where you can take missions, buy items, upgrade your ship, and play a maze game on an arcade cabinet
  • Various things such as Apex labs, or Human prisons, can be found in the world
  • The world lacks randomized generation, as in it having a set universe with preset planets.

Starbound. Well, had I listented to my friend Noch I'd have been playing it for months by now. Being a PC gamer for decades Im not all that into the side scrollers so had stayed away. To my surprise the game has alot of tactical versatility in how you dig and build to bypass, ambush and get around.
Being simpler graphics it is also less demanding on hardware which makes it a wonderful match for laptop gaming.

How to make your early access game successful:

Don't make promises you can't keep. If you're going to make promises, make them small. I.E. more secret levels.

Show people progress of your game, via Twitch, panels, or whatever. Blogposts doesn't do this very well.

Don't make the only way of seeing progress a buggy build that adds one thing to the game.

Don't make your game more or less exactly the same as a better game.

Update your game, even if it's small stuff like new sprites for perks or something.

Don't buy this. It's development speed is slow and they ban and censor threads in the forum that mention either :-

A) How bad the game is in its current build
B) How that the company has profited to the tune of £5,000,000, yet wont invest in any new artists / coders, or musical talen
C) Banning people for spurious reasons
D) Being arrogant

But hell, if you liked Terraria, keep watching. The game might get good one day.

This game is Really Well created. They got the gameplay just right.

Every single update has brought a new amount of fun to the game and i could not stop playing it.
As you can see i have spent over 280 hours on quite a lot of profiles. I LOVE IT

Some people said it was too much like terraria. This is very incorrect. Sure, its 2D but Starbound is more organised and has a better background story. Even better you can have your own spaceship! Terraria seems like a rushed game.

This is 10/10 recommended

I know a lot of people are saying that development it slow, and you should wait. But I've been playing from the start with a group of 5 friends. So if you have people to play with, and you like RPing or building giant stuff, GET IT
