We've released a small update this morning that should take care of some collection-related issues introduced in 1.1, plus a few other little things! Click through to read the patch notes. :)

Starbound v1.1 - Changelog

Hey, everyone! It's patch day!

Version 1.1 is our first content patch since the full release of Starbound -- we've added a fishing game, item collections, Novakid villages and more! Check the changelog below for a list of major/minor changes and bug fixes, and then go relocate some Fluffalo!

Major Changes

  • Fishing
    • Two tiers of fishing rods are now craftable from the Foraging Table and can be used to fish on ocean planets (including arctic, toxic and magma oceans)
    • Added 48 unique fish types to catch
    • Rare fish can give valuable rewards, including reel and lure upgrades to enhance your fishing rod
  • Collections
    • New Collections interface tracks various kinds of collectables including captured pets, figurines, fish, cooking recipes, fossils, and bugs

  • Added the Relocator tool, which allows non-hostile creatures such as critters, fish, bugs, and farm animals to be moved

  • Added friendly Novakid villages including a variety of new Novakid-themed furniture and objects

Minor Changes & Bug Fixes
  • Saloon furniture previously sold at Frogg Furnishings is now available in Novakid villages, and has been replaced with the Pastel set (which has its own unique tenant)
  • Novakids can now be generic tenants or guards
  • Added Novakid NPC dialogue
  • Implemented party chat and local (planet) chat
  • Acid rain now applies poison instead of direct damage
  • Console objects are now available as themed tenant rewards

Okay. We should be fair with Starbound. I will bs nobody.
First off, I am a supporter from back when it was on Early Access.
The game has been dramatically changed since then.
I had to play through the whole game again, since my savegame was not compatible with V1 but who cares really?

So, what IS Starbound?
Well it started as an open world sandbox game. KEEP THAT IN MIND PLEASE.
So, since then a lot of stuff were added.
We got a great set of unlockable technology upgrades, so you can craft gradually stuff you are gonna need.
The game introduces you gradually to its universe with a set of missions, to do some essential things.
The whole tutorial is the lore of the game. Yup! A sandbox with lore as tutorial, how do you like that?
One step before going against the final boss, you know you are ready to explore whatever you want.
What a great idea! You also carry a codex, where you can collect a lot of wrriten stuff, like journals, stories etc etc, very rewarding for readers.
You can collect various stuff, like bugs, fish, fossils, and make collections out of them.

Randomly (?) generated quests occur all the time, with always interesting rewards and not useless stuff.
Challenges are available and a lot of stuff to do.

You can farm, you can have your own pets... what else can I say about this awesome game?

Oh! The world!
Well basically you start on a solar system. Then you go outside of it to another star. Stars are solar systems with planets inside them. Imagine that stars are generated gradually as you move through the universe map. And believe me, there are LOTS of stars, full of planets to explore.

Favorite changes (for early access users that wanna see what's new):
A] The pixel compressor has no penalty.
B] The fuel gathering became an interesting challenge instead of a freaking boring process.
C] Optimized not to lag.

So let's see:

Graphics: 90% Fantastic pixel art
Sound: 90% Great music but too emotional for my taste. Still great.
Gameplay: 90% It is very polished, the game seldom lags even on my old PC
Replayability value: 90% With so many races, I bet this can be played many many times.
Value for money: 90% I played 300 hours already, including the time before V1 was released.
Scenario: 70% Interesting scenario, but that's it. <<< This is considered an EXTRA on a sandbox game.

Do I recommend this?
Well yes. It is a great game, just don't take it for an RPG.

To give a good discription of why this game is good, I only need to say a few words.

It's Terraria with space travel and a story. Also, it's no man's sky with content besides geology simulator.

Now, that's just the surface of this glorious experience. You can be a human, bird, space gorrila, a tribal plant thing, a japanese fish, or a person that was a star. Oh, and I forgot to mention the feudal robots.

There are space alpacas, penguins that are criminals, frogs, space nazis, space hitler, tentacle planet, (formerly known as earth), Giant spiders, giant holographic ape heads that shoot lazer fists at you, bird robot, proceduraly generated monsters, and worlds.

Now, there's one more thing about this game, that can eighter; make it better, or make it much, much, oh so much worse. Mods. If you're going to mod this game, stick to the workshop. It has the quality mods, made by people who arn't bronies or furries. You'll get ship, weapon, meme, and cosmetic mods, with a few race extenders and races. There are some S.A.I.L replacements here too. But, besides the workshop, DO NOT, AND I REPEAT DO NOT INSTALL ANY MODS THAT ARE NOT FROM STEAM. From nexus, you'll get porn and fetish mods, and anywhere else, it's much the same. One more risk from instaling mods, workshop or not, you have the chance of completely bricking a save, because you installed it incorrectly, or you removed it. (ship mods are the worst in this regard.)

In short, there's lots to do and see in this game, and if you ignore the existance of 75% of the mods for this game, you'll have a great time probably. Or your computer will just refuse to run it at a decent frame rate. That's a problem too.

If you have someone to play it with or don't mind using mods, then maybe this game is for you. Most of the vanilla combat (pets, guns...) feel pretty unbalanced to me. I had to get mods to make the game somewhat balanced and fun.

It just feels like this game has went in circles since I bought it in Early Access.
They've added fossils and fishing, but as I said before, the combat is unenjoyable.
I feel like I shouldn't have to depend on the game community to make said game fun.

So... I've played this game before it was fully realeased. It was... alright, to say the least. Now it is... alright yet again, just a bit better.
The thing that made me buy it was space, and the fact it has exploration and sandbox features. I always wanted to have a sandbox game where I can do whatever the hell I want in the infinite universe, and Starbound is that game.

"Then why do you give this game a negative review?" You might ask.

Let me first tell you what's great about this game:
1. You have your own spaceship where you can travel wherever you want;
2. There is some nice variety in planets, monsters, biomes, weapons etc.;
3. There's the story, which isn't really deep or complex in quests, but it's good IMO;
4. Each race has history and culture... except for Novakids but that's because they don't care about history;
5. There is a lot of stuff to upgrade, collect, buy etc.;
6. You can play on instruments and form a band;
7. A lot of other things I don't remember...

Now with the issue that just makes me get bored in this game really quickly:


I honestly don't know. I just don't want to build anything. Just a thought of it demotivates me from playing, so does collecting stuff because I know that stuff like fish or cooking collections will just end up being a chore.
I didn't even get myself to decorate my ship. All I did was to upgrade it to maximum size and then just left it half empty...
I keep trying to guess what deters me from building in this game. Maybe the game is too small? Maybe there are too much furniture to pick from? I don't know... And I have the similar issue with Terraria, though there I also have issue with how it is unfriendly towards newbies (more on that in my Terraria review).

Now, it was a hard choice between recommending the game or not. My personal experience is just slightly more towards no, but that's just me.
If you had similar issues in Terraria, then you will only have fun doing main quests, you'll get bored after that. If you play Terraria a lot though then by all means buy it, you won't regret it.
Now for those non-Terraria players. If you like space and exploration, then I guess you'll like this game. If you are also creative and like building, then you should give it a try.

Starbound before release: I want to go to a snow planet, but it's too cold there. I'll have to find and craft some snow survival gear so I can travel there. If there's a snowstorm, I'll have to prepare an igloo and go underground for warmth until the storm is over.

After release: You will die on the snow planet unless you do a quest to get a suit upgrade so you can become invincible to the cold. The snow protection gear is no longer craftable, you have to quest for it... and it's useless.

Why did you replace the open world with more quests? I liked when the quests were optional, when you wanted to upgrade your ship. Now it's linear? I don't want to grind on my starting planet so I can even go to the next planet.

It used to be: Whatever planet you started on would be cool. But to get to any other planet, you'll have to fix your ship.

Now: You have to stay on this planet and do this quest. Go underground and do all this linear stuff, then go back up to your ship and keep questing until you finally get to be able to play the dunegon you HAVE to do to get your ship fixed. If you don't have good gear, you will not be able to beat the dungeon.

The solution: Go into godmode, beat the dungeon, grind the quests, and finally you're able to actually play the game.

Can we have an option for a rollback please?

just to sum it up, this whole game just feels like a chore, like, the majority of the game is just going around scanning items from different settlements,in fact, the whole game is just scanning some things, then go fight this boss and so on through out the whole game. The lighting engine is beautyful. The partice efffects are beautyful. The music is beautyful. Every thing about this game is beautyful.

And that's not all! There's a lot of gamepay here. It's sorta similar to Terraria in a way. You can explore a place in both games, there's crafting in both games, ther are a lot of enemies and bosses in both games, you get to create a settelment/colony in both games, but in Starbound there's space(, the final frontier), spaheships, more ithems (i think), many planets and more fun(for me).

TL;DR: Starbound is sorta similar to Terraria in a way, but there is a lot more stuff, and the game is bor beautyfun in every way.

10/10 I recommend

I just beat the 1.0 version of the game. I bought it in EA and have played it on and off since then. Let me take you through some pros and cons:

-Wonderful soundtrack
-Neat story
-Some of the unique weapons are fun

-main quest line is weak, too easy, quests are similar and boring
-Crafting upgrades are direct, linear improvements from one item to the next
-Planets are randomly generated, and once you have seen one type of planet, you have pretty much seen them all.
-Little to no replayability
-There is literally no reward/motivation to start a colony since they give u stuff u already have

If they add more stuff to this game, it might be worthwhile, but for now, its just tedious. Just get Terraria, I give that game a thumbs up, and would much prefer it over Starbound.

I would not recommend Starbound unless you know that you like this kind of game -- or you get it on a good sale -- and, as others have noted, you have a decent rig. But if you are dead set on giving this kind of game a try now, just get Terraria: it has more content and is cheaper!

I get the sense that Starbound itself is pretty solid, but alas, to my chagrin I discovered that I don't really like this kind of game. Crafting is somewhat shallow, and tedious. Collecting resources is very tedious. Combat is tedious when it isn't annoyingly clumsy. Oh well. At least the music is good -- sometimes I launch the game just to listen to the opening sequence.

Normally I judge the "value" of a game by 1+hours/dollar spent. I may eventually reach that.

First off:
- Terribly predictable main storyline. Flat as a pancake. The beta "distress beacon" quests and such were better.
- No "rising action", no suspense. You know exactly what's going to happen. They tell you in the first ma
- Random generation still gets repetitive after awhile; more variation in weapons, biomes, and dear god, armor, would be great.
- No endgame material. Not much incentive to keep playing after beating the final boss.
- Unbalanced/unfinished parts, e.i. pets and crew, and missing Novakid mission...maybe in a future update.
- Performance issues, especially with servers.
- Slowed updates. From what I've heard, most of the Starbound team has moved on. This isn't like Terraria. :(

- Fantastic music!
- Fantastic pixel art. Seriously stunning, makes Terraria look bad.
- Cute and witty, throughout the dialogue, item descriptions, unique monsters, dungeons...
- Incredibly engaging. You definitely get your money's worth with the sandbox aspect.
- Easily moddable!

Starbound, in my opinion, has had it's ups and downs in terms of general quality with each update. Still, whenever I play it, I always find joy in it. There's always something new to find, and the high customization of the player's environment makes it unique. Sure, it's a crafting/building game, but it has a lot of soul. Think Terraria, but so much better.

Also you start the game with a lovable pet, and it's great.

Didn't love it. Thought Terraria was fun and maybe this would be up my alley too. Started building a base on one planet, but then it felt pointless when I went to a different planet. Sometimes I like open world sandbox games, sometimes no. Oh well.
