Starbound v1.1 - Changelog

Hey, everyone! It's patch day!

Version 1.1 is our first content patch since the full release of Starbound -- we've added a fishing game, item collections, Novakid villages and more! Check the changelog below for a list of major/minor changes and bug fixes, and then go relocate some Fluffalo!

Major Changes

  • Fishing
    • Two tiers of fishing rods are now craftable from the Foraging Table and can be used to fish on ocean planets (including arctic, toxic and magma oceans)
    • Added 48 unique fish types to catch
    • Rare fish can give valuable rewards, including reel and lure upgrades to enhance your fishing rod

Base Game = Ok Game pretty Fun.
Base Game + Multiplayer = The best its gonna get.
Base Game + Mods = Very very Fun.
Base Game + Mods + Multiplayer = Prepare to become StarLord as you adventure across the cosmos doing "a bit of both".
Base Game + Mods + Multiplayer + Free Time = Police being called to investate why you have disappeared and havent shown up to work in two weeks.

10/10 Would be a suspected kidnap victim again

I am not really sure what to make of the final version of Starbound. I bought this in it's early stages of development, and I have to say first off that I think it was a real mistake to release the game so early. It was literally years away from completion when it was first released. Way, way too early. Anyway, on to the final version, and I think I prefer the earlier version!!! The earlier version was more of a sandbox idea, you could just wander about and build things. The final version, though, I really find the alien creatures very annoying. They always attack you and seem able to kill you with just a few hits. When you are trying to learn the game, and more to the point when you are more interested in exploration and building rather than fighting, their constant presence of atacking creatures is very tiring. And I also have some objection to the fact that most alien cratures would be unfriendly. It would have completely changed the feeling of the game had they mostly been friendly instead. There really should be an option to disable or at least reduce the numbers of them. They are literally every ten feet in the game. So I guess whether you like Starbound very much depends on what you expect from the game. Recommended? Well, like I said, depends what you expect from the game. I will say yes, but like me you may find it a bit annoying.

October 13, 2016 - I prefer Terraria more than Starbound in almost every way at this point in time. The price for Starbound, 14.99 USD is probably the correct max price.

As I understand it, the game has been available in early access since December 2013, and spent time being developed before that. It got a full release on July 22, 2016.

I'm gonna explain what I liked about vanilla Terraria so I can compare that to Starbound.

You started off in a procedurally generated world with basic tools, a weapon, and the Guide npc. You then explore, collect basic resources like wood and stone, and fend off various monsters at night. Eventually you'll end up fighting the first boss, the Eye of Cthulu.

You'll start mining resources underground to further build infrastructure and to craft more weapons and items. You'll fight different bosses and various world events like falling meteorites will happen, offering rare and more useful materials.

Eventually, you will be prepared to traverse the bottom on the world, the hell biome, in order to craft the (vanilla) end-game armor made from hellstone. Around that time, you could challenge the Skeletor boss by talking to the npc outside of the dungeon.

This vanilla journey was fantastic to experience the first time. The game only became better each time the game got updated, adding tougher bosses, better weapons, combinable accessories, extra biomes (Hallowed, more content for the Corruption, the Crimson biome, etc.), more things to craft, fishing, the Pyramid, Alien Invasions, etc.

Now, for vanilla Starbound.

I have to say, I hate everything about the movement. Everything.
- The movemnt is extremely floaty. It's impossible to calmy step down a 1x1 block incline. Jumping onto a 1x1 block is also far too difficult without double or triple jump.
-It's not possible to chain movement abilities fluidly: I can't use the sprint tech and double jump. Using the dash removes the ability to jump for a moment. Air dash removes the ground dash. Blink dash cancels the charge of heavy 2 handed weapons.

The Freedom of Movement mod on the steam workshop fixes and sidesteps some of the problems with ability movement, but the weird floatyness is still present.

The combat and monster variety is awful.
- What's the difference between one flying bird monster and another flying monster? There isn't. What's the difference between a plant monster and a murderous robot? There really isn't. Occasionally a monster is capable of a ranged attack and some of those ranged attackers move slowly. Unfortunately, most monsters sort of just aggro on to you and charge at you. Your options are to dodge, block, or attack it for every enemy.

You might argue, "Terraria was the same." Not really. Flying eye monsters would sort of fly in an eliptical path to you. This meant you could save yourself effort by not changing what you're doing if they were not going to hit you on their immeadiate flight path. Corrupters would sort of position themselves in a set radius around you and spit projectiles that turn regular blocks into corrupted blocks, which if left unchecked could spread corruption much farther. Zombies would mindlessly aggro to you, but that makes sense for them. Imps in hell would teleport somewhere on your screen and attack you with a projectile that could travel throgh blocks, so you could dodge or destroy the projectile until you could kill them.

The bosses in Starbound are boring, take too long to beat, and aren't fun to play against. If you think the bosses in general are acceptable or fun, I'm glad you enjoy this part of the game more than me.
- Dreadwing shoots at you while it strafes left and right: You can dodge most of those shots by strafing in the same direction and you only need to react when it changes direction. Dreadwing smashes its body to ground when you're under it: Use a jump or sprint or dash before it gets to hit you.
- The Erchius Horror boss requires that you hit four buttons that charge up a laser. You need use the laser three times. You avoid its own damaging laser beams by staying in safe zones by jumping on platforms, waiting for a safe chance to hit those buttons.
- It's my opinion that the rest of the bosses aren't fun either.

The weapons are mostly boring. Slightly more interesting weapons are usually inconvenient or bad.
- Most random loot weapons are awful.
- Most snipers don't have a real purpose since they don't typically one-shot enemies who will just start charging at you.
- Most two handed weapons are worse in various ways than the Violium Broadsword which you make from a fully upgraded anvil.
- The Magnet Orbs are interesting as you can shoot multiple projectiles and can be used as a shield, but does low damage on the harder planets.

The npcs in Starbound are empty and without purpose for the most part.
- Quest npcs give quests. What else? They give you more quests until they run out of quests. Do they have any meaningful dialogue if you interact with them outiside of quests? No, not really.
- Most npc merchants sell bad random weapons and random pieces of armor sets.
- The only villan npc you interact with has nothing interesting to say and adds nothing of interest. If you read the extra codex entries, you find some backstory which doesn't change how unneccesary her inclusion in the game is. A generic hooded cultist would have been more appropriate.
- Colonists don't really matter outside of Steam achievements
- Colonists give fetch quests which are go from point a to point b, do x, come back to a, do y, go to c, etc.

The story might as well not exist.
- The story is that you need to collect five macguffins which are guarded by boss fights in indestructable, predetermined areas which are only accessable after you look at alien furniture so that you can fight the hentai monster that was sealed away by the space god emperor who sacrificed himself for your sins. Jokes asides, that description is actually far too accurate.

I remember seeing this game and thinking, "I'll wait until it's out of early access, I've already wasted money on Planet Explorers when it went on sale, so I don't wanna make that mistake again." Well, It's still a fun 2d sandbox game and I've put a lot of time into it but I can't recommend this game. It's not a good product when you consider that this was for sale almost 3 years ago.

I'm gonna build some more buildings for fun and I like collectathons, but I'm probably gonna stop playing when I feel that the rng deems me unworthy of seeing the last bugs to catch and the last fossils to unearth.

Since the laster few updates for starbound after launch, it seems like the game has
a bigger sense of adventure but without all the troubles of finding things now.
Like the one sign mission beta... But, of course this game has now finally up to the end of the game.
There is a lot of mods to choose from, from music to weapons and races even.
The community has much potentional for this game, and hopefully chucklefish can support the modding community.

I'd like to give this game a big 10/10 for everything it has.

it was so good. emphasis on was... but ever since the update it has been horrible, like to the point i haven't wanted to play it. for several reasons:

1. it doesn't seem to work on any computer made before 2016, so none of my friends can play with me. (the only reason i can is because i got given a shiny new pc)
2. half the things that made it a good sandbox game are gone. wanna make a character to role play as? well you can't anymore because you have to jump through like 17 hoops just to unlock tech.
3. THE TECH, all the good ones are gone. like "screw being able to have 7 jumps in a row. but oh! everyone wants to wall jump or have a maximum of 3 jumps" no one even asked for that. it was fine before you messed with it.
4. starting mission? what? oh? i'm a college dropout or something? wow, now my character is less "me" and more some guy who found a portal gun or something.
5. all my old characters are gone, it removed all the characters i spent time on. can't even get the items from them or anything. gotta start fresh with our new horrible mechanics.

i have been playing this update for about 30 minutes, i came on to make a character for if i ever got to play it with friends again but no, you have to go through a lot and i'm not jst talking about the "optional" starting mission. no more just spawning things in and getting to make your own story. they have taken out everything good and replaced it with stuff that has be so overhyped that it is stale. the hell even is a fuffalo and why is it better that being able to jump high enough to actually get out of trouble.

i used to love this game. heck i have like 100 hours or something, i dunno how many, as it stopped loading through steam. but now it is terrible, would not recommend. y'know those parents that give you a half decent phone then replace it with a brick, it's like we are being punished, we had so much fun and now we have to go back to dull, mundane, average games.

it's not even "oh, you're just not used to it yet, it the same" because it isn't, like i said, you were able to have about 5-6 consecutive jumps, now the max you get is 3. you were able to dash across things lighting fast, now the fastest you can go is a gentle sprint. you used to be able to summon a shield to protect you from fall damage, now your only options are turn into 4 different types of ball, like in metroid. i fail to see how being a ball that can pass overwater is better than having a shield that protected you from any fall.

thanks starbound, you really did us all a favour! gg no re. 10 / 10 best game. except not really, its so bad now.

Tons of crafting.. Fun/Challenging bosses/dungeons... lots of weapons.. mod support(which i haven't even tried yet bc i haven't felt the need to but it's there).. humor.. cool locations... This game is great and there's a ton of stuff to do in it.

This game is basically what No Mans Sky should have been on a 2-D plane and already has proven to have better developer updates and feedback than NMS could ever dream of. Basically its a great space survival story with lots of replayability. A personal 10/10.

Wow. Those years of development truly paid off. The final (err, not EVEN final as there will be more updates) product is excellent, and while there are a few bugs left over from development, I can say wholeheartedly that this is a title worth playing. It truly feels like an interstellar adventure

So you want to know about Starbound

Where the hell do I start.

There are many, many pros, and maybe a few cons. If you're lucky.
So let's get started.

Let's keep note that I've sunk about 200 hours into this game, "completed" it twice, and am quite fervorously into the modding community (If fervorously a word? Ah well.)

•A comprehensive GUI and crafting system makes the game very easy to get around in
•A full "Technology" advancement system based on improving existing tables rather than making new ones
•Movement reminiscent of games such as Terraria and other sandbox-platformers makes a familiar scheme.
•An upgrade system for your infinitive mining device
•An energy system that handles both guns and magic, allowing for diverse gameplay
•A developer base geared to the community, to the point of going through the pain of integrating the Workshop for mods
•An exceedingly diverse building assortment, from planks and bricks to solid flesh and blood
•A large assortment of "Things to do" from making a settlement to collecting every bug in the universe
•A crew to take with you on expeditions and hunts - If you've the time to hire them
•A tech system that's more comprehensive than punching wood

Now, naturally, as with any good game, there's a fair share of cons, that many would see as features to "add difficulty"
This is MY OPINION and MY OPINION ONLY so don't get upset if you disagree. I'm completely open to debate, mind you, if you've reasoning to back it up.

That's not a valid argument. This shouldn't need to be cleared up, but just in case- this is the internet.

•The difficulty of finding appealing building material is phenomenal. I still need that stupid floran carving..
•This is a spoiler, ye been warned The absurdity of the "Item Scan" missions is rediculous, Esther.
•The temptation to cheat is always looming, as it's as simple as a single command and there's no penalty for it.
•The "Immobility" of the player is rediculous as well, as you need a hoverbike to really get exploring.
•Fall damage is very forgiving, throwing yourself off of a cliff and pulse jumping at the last second negates the challenge.
•The difficulty slope at the beginning is quite looming, and then later it's just too easy.
•The shops around the universe can be quite useless unless you need that sugar for your cake, or that super spin slash.
•Honestly, who needs to go beyond the third mission if you're not focussed on "Beating" the game? In other words, we need more reward for going through the pain of scanning randomly generated structures, and that makes it so hollow.
•While having a crew is nice, they really don't do much off the ship, and they get themselves killed so much.

The game used to be brilliant. It probably still is. The only problem with it is that it doesn't actually work. I press play and it opens as usual but then it just randomly closes. I have no idea on what to do. It needs to be fixed!

I don't think I'll be able to fairly judge this game given the amount of hours I've played Terraria for in total.

Though I can tell you that it has a great fanbase and everyone I've spoken to who plays this game enjoys it, from what I've seen it also certainly looks like a good game. if you're into this sort of genre and haven't played Terraria for hundreds of hours then I would give it chance.

The story isn't bad, but I'd say the main interest is exploring planets, upgrading your ship, and founding colonies. Some of the later game planets have the mystery of how they came to be with interesting objects in the parallax.

Building can get pretty interesting when you acquire the right blueprints and build on the more extreme planets or under the ocean.
