Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this game.
I have played it for years and both love and hate it.
Many times have I deleted all my characters and vowed never to return to it.
Many times have I relented and given it another go.
Each time the conviction becomes stronger to leave it alone.
Finally, I have decided to play one last time, this time not to delete. I will be playing a warforged sorcerer, for the heals and the burst dps. I'll be focusing on the conjuration school of magic for my feats, to improve the DC of the spells so they aren't resisted as easily and saved against, such as when the mob takes half or no damage. I believe the conjuration school is the one with the most damage spells, if not then whichever school. No metamagic feats, except maybe heighten, for bosses. Having many spell points means not having to use only spell-like abilities, where metamagic feats have no cost. At least that is the theory. Another option would be warforged wizard, but i'm just not thrilled by the wizard skill tree, and its poor showing of SLA's. Another option would be maximize and the other damage boosting feat with a sorcerer tree, but then you can't cast any other damaging spells without turning off the feats, which is not a big deal, but you lose the feats you would have used for the improved DC (difficulty c-something).
And that brings us to the reason I think this game is broken. TR, or True Reincarnation.
For whatever reason, they chose to give you the option of reincarnating as a level 1 again but with a bonus feat and a couple of bonus stat points, and maybe something else. I think it is total bs. There are those who have done it a thousand times and are so far beyond the 'noob' who is on his 'first life' it is really quite pathetic. And to expect any new player to embrace this concept and desire to play this way is even more pathetic. It is really very embarrassing. I'm almost embarrassed to be playing it at all, but I have such a history with the game that it just felt right to have a presence in it, with at least one character.
Will I eventually reincarnate and play again, with either the same class/race or some other? I don't know. I doubt I will ever get to level 20. I doubt the game will last much longer. Somehow there is a devoted subscriber base that pays for at least one developer who regularly cranks out some sort of updates that I really never get to play, having always deleted my characters before getting to that level.
There is one benefit to reincarnating, for a f2p player like me, which is the ability to start new quests on hard or elite, on your 2nd and 3rd lives, respectively. I don't really see it as a benefit, but the developer got to eat so they have to gimp the f2p/freemium player somehow.
The alternative is to subscribe, for maybe a month, maybe more, depending on your bent. I have taken a no-subscribe vow for all games, since quitting wow. I subscribed for a month to ddo, but they charged me for 2 months, and I didn't even keep playing, it just got so lame running behind the 'ubers' trying to keep up. But it turns out this is really every game. Bunch of ubers admiring each other. Back-slapping society. The difference is that in DDO you start over at level 1 every 20 levels. You can continue to the 'epic' levels now, but who would do that? You will always be lacking the reincarnation feats other characters have accrued.
Some people will say, 'well, that is the game, what's not to like?'. And I say, be nicer to your fremium players. Don't be so exclusive. Don't be so elitist. Make your game inviting to all, not just a few who fall for the line you are playing out.
I've purchased nearly every questpack the game has, except for a couple of the newest ones that are very high level anyway, so I probably will never play them. This is stupid if I ever subscribe, even for a month. So, I will play my punk-♥♥♥ warforged sorcerer and do the quests solo, and maybe reincarnate, if I ever get there. I was going to play a halfling sorcerer or something equally pathetic, but everyone just says, 'why aren't you a warforged?'. As I said, broken game. I could play any other character, of whatever 'build' is recommended, but I like the sorcerer. Actually, I mostly just don't like the other classes, with their stick swinging whackwhackwhack nonsense all the damn time.
So, I will see you in the game, maybe, though not with this name, lol. Or, perhaps you will understand my reasoning and stay away. For the most part, I will be staying away, but sometimes, just for the memories, I will come back to it, run a quest, deconstruct some items, polish my whatever item, and feel the nostalgia. Cheers to a dead game, DDO, how ever much longer it takes for it to realize that and quit trying to reincarnate.
