“this is the ultimate group game”
8/10 – Eurogamer
“The goal of D&D Online: Stormreach was to recreate the heady thrill of a well-sculpted dungeon crawl in mom's basement, and to that end, Turbine has succeeded beyond expectations.”

I have almost 900 hours in this game, so please listen to my words.

This game has a heart and soul beyond any other MMO currently available.

Its only flaw is how unfamiliar it can be to newcomers. Do not be afraid to ask for help.

I love you all.

Do not buy any of the adventure packs direct through steam

it is not reasonable to do so

buy direct in game or VIP only :S

unless you have infinite money or no smarts

one of my favorite MMOs to ever exist, I've been playing this game for 8 years and I miss the way the community used to be, I wish people would start playing it again.

My favorite MMORPG out of all I've played.

A large portion of this is the extent to which it encourages cooperation with other players. In other MMOs I have played, I've just ended up wandering through the starting area doing quests, never feeling the need to party with other players. In Dungeons & Dragons Online (DDO), if you want to complete the dungeons on the highest difficulty setting, having other players around is a great boon. Traps alone can give many adventurers a lot of trouble, and having(or being) a player that can disable them makes them a valuable member of a party. And, while many experienced players have ways of keeping themselves alive regardless of class, everyone appreciates a good healer.

I also love the high level of customization available in DDO. You have the option to set your own ability scores (STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, and CHA), allocate your own skills (Search and Disable Device are paramount for trappers, while Jump is more generally useful), and choose your own feats, including fighting styles such as Two-Handed, Two Weapon(including "unarmed" combat), Single Weapon, and Shield Mastery. Casters have the option of taking metamagic feats such as Maximize and Empower to increase the destructive(or healing) power of their spells, or Heighten and the various Spell Focuses to make them harder to resist (especially useful for instant kill spells and Crowd Control).

A less desirable feature to many players may be that the game is heavily instanced. There aren't many vast areas to explore; many quest entrances are accessed directly from town, and each party will be in a separate instance of each quest or wilderness zone. While I feel that this was necessary to encourage cooperation to the extent that they have, I can understand players who may think this makes the world feel smaller.

Also, a large portion of the game is behind P2P bars, despite the game itself being Free to Play. You CAN earn Turbine Points in-game and unlock the content of the game without spending a cent, but I have heard that it is better to consider the game a subscription-based game with a limited free trial than a truly free to play game, and I can appreciate that standpoint. If you start playing the game without unlocking any content, you can feel the P2P walls start closing in on you, starting especially around level 6-8 (level cap is 30, so this is higher than it sounds compared to other games).

That said, I feel that the pros outweigh the cons for this game; feel free to jump in for free, and see how well you like it before commiting to paying for anything, and I definitely recommend waiting for sales before purchasing Adventure Packs to make the most out of your Turbine Points.
