Absolute worst Sonic game I've ever played. Loved the original, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, etc. but this is pure garbage. Might be the worst game I've ever played overall. The game also requires an installation of Java to run, which is ridiculous. Uninstalling both the game and Java and never coming back to this crap again.

I barely ever write reviews for game, but seriously, if there is a game that is frustrating because of the game's physics, it's this one. I was at the verge of smashing my xbox controller at the screen, but decided to uninstall.

Sonic is ultra slow and the game engine treats him as if he was ultra fast ... that means, loads of time you don't get out of traps fast enough and die like an idiot because of horrible mechanics.

I feel sad with myself for not finishing this, but I was not enjoying it one bit. Even if you are a fan of the classic sonic, think twice before buying this and saying "oh, I'm sure I'll enjoy it, it's cheap ...". The game doesn't have a neutral score on steam for nothing.

Decent platformer with some good stage designs, lots of flaws with the physics in game tho that are infurating.
The music for most of the stages will drive you insane, all very very very short, and looping.

3/5 stars get it when its onsale.

i actually don't know what everybody's issue with this game is. the physics is different from other entries in the series. it doesn't make real-world sense, but neither is anything else in those game, and it works, it does have good 'game-feel' as it should. the levels are imaganetive and fun, a bit long compared to say sonic 1's, but the whole game is only 12 acts and 5 bosses so you it's not that bad. i don't have any specific praise, just that it's fun and never bland.

A surprisingly good reboot of 2D Sonic, with better graphics, OK music and almost-as-good gameplay. The backgrounds are gorgeous and the feel of the original games has almost been emulated to perfection. The levels are predominantly good (with only a couple stinkers), and the different worlds are quite unique, even though there are not that many of them. The game can be finished in a couple of hours - which, I think, is actually a pretty perfect length for a 2D Sonic game.

It's no Sonic 2, but it's still a sold 2D Sonic game.

虽然说这个怀旧的想法是好的,但相比于经典的索尼克123,终究是有些落了下乘。SONIC TEAM的年轻人们还有很多需要向前辈们学习的地方。
当然也有进步的地方,可以随时选关卡了,多次挑战special stage,手残党福利?
单独作为一个2D平台游戏来说,还是很好的。

Try get the 7 emeralds pal!

The game is as hard as any sonic, but as always , the emeralds mark the true ending and I´ve spent 3 days and have 6 emeralds...

This game is absolutely trash. Keeping and losing your momentum at seemingly random times is bad enough, but crippling you after every single homing attack by forcing you out of your attack ball is just pure nonsense.

It absoluutely boggles the mind who on earth worked on these controls and thought that this was acceptable. I was already questioning the quality of this game on the very first stage because of them. It never got better.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is a really enjoyable game, I don't care what anybody else thinks. However, the Special Stages have a time limit now, AND THEY ARE SO DIFFICULT. But without the Chaos Emerald challenge, the game is easy, a great choice if you're trying to get into Sonic.

这游戏有个叫做Enemy Hunter的成就,要求是击败1000个敌人。

关了游戏就重置,我感觉我快要窒息了。
就因为这个成就我几乎要给不推荐。
要刷这个成就请做好整天不关游戏的准备。
也不知道怎么想的,多写入个变量这么困难吗?

世嘉在2010年搞了个大新闻——Project Needlemouse(非官译:针鼠计划),
把这个系列活生生拖回了索尼克3之后,扔了这么一个索尼克4(而且还是第一章)给这个系列的粉丝们。
...当时粉丝们是拒绝的。
下面这个人说的这番话表明了我们的心声:
“你老早前搞了个索尼克3,然后开始搞一大堆副标题的系列,现在又搞回索尼克4,那中间这些是什么鬼?” ——AVGN

不论是不是新瓶装旧酒,不玩玩也不知道是什么货色。
本来就是针对移动设备打造的游戏,自然不报太大的期待。
第一次接触这游戏是以WiiWare的形式。
当年Wii的光头出了问题读不了盘,说实话在这期间这个游戏给了我挺多乐趣的。
这个移植版的体验,总体而言,并没有多大的出入。

系列最核心的速度感并不让人失望,各种关卡的设计也很有当年索尼克1和2的调调。(谢天谢地没有CD的调调)
最让人觉得愉快的应该还是操作的流畅。
起跑加速度设定得恰到好处,不会让人觉得太滑溜(例:索尼克1)也不会太沉重(例:索尼克进化系列)。
还引入了Sonic Adventure之后才有的技能Homing Attack,让我们的索尼克可以耍耍滞空装逼。
你得明白,2D玩法的索尼克游戏,有了空中向前的这么小小一下加速是多么如虎添翼。
不仅如此,踩上加速器会自动变成球状,这是本作第一次出现的设计,
我的天,各位知道这个设计多么人性化吗?!
Dimps的策划们,为何你们不早点想到呢?
如果要说和最早发售的iPhone版比较有什么差别,
那应该就只有过山车地形的时候,镜头不会跟随旋转罢了。
所以我跟你说,这个操作手感,棒。

虽然这游戏给人的感觉是挺不错的,但是我们从这个游戏的出发点考虑一下。
如果这个作品策划想给玩家传达的感受是回归系列初始的体验,
那么我要说,省省吧。
就在这个策划公开的最近几年里,
所谓“系列初始的体验”还在被拿来翻来覆去地炒。
这个游戏里的几种地图风格(海滨,赌场,洞窟,工厂,宇宙要塞)都能在旧三部曲里找到原型,
然而这些风格从未在整个系列里消失过。
你如果不信,来做几个象征性的题目吧,
  1. Green Hill和Seaside Hill这类地面有黄色与棕色方格纹理的海边场景在整个系列里出现了几次?
  2. 赌场关卡出现了几次?
所以从出发点来看,这游戏的策划是失败的,
在玩家眼里:这是个索尼克游戏,横版的,模型是3D的,没了。

讲真,索尼克3都有小动画来演示剧情,这整个第一章下来给点剧情能死吗?
明明后面顶着个大大的4,玩起来跟个外传似的,很微妙。
(当然我明白这是在致敬索尼克1。)


总结一下就是:手感极佳,画面凑合,情怀现象严重(然而并没有人去关心)。
手游移植素质,并不算厉害也并不算糟,不如同样是移植的Steam版索尼克CD。
认命吧,这个系列不适合打怀旧牌,因为这个系列无时不在怀旧。
当然,这些都是喜欢探根究底的玩家们茶余饭后的装逼用笑谈罢了,并不会对游戏体验有多大影响。
喜欢这个系列的还是推荐买买买的啦。
全成就没有太大难度,除了我在最上面说到的那个屎蛋。

Might as well start this off by saying that all the Sonic games for the Sega Mega Drive were the first videogames I ever played as a kid, and I played them over and over for years, so I've had quite a bit of experience when it comes to this type of Sonic game... Now.. Onto the review.

Sonic The Hedgehog 4 really really does not live up to the standards of the original Sonic games on the Megadrive/ Genesis. Quite a big letdown..

There's quite a few problems I noticed as soon as I started playing... The spindash is really really REALLY slow, even when rolling down hills and after using a speed booster, and many times Sonic just...stopped right in the middle of rolling, unrolling if you go over a ramp or an edge, which left me too slow to make a jump a few times. The physics just do not work well at all.

I only played Splash Hill zone til completion and some of Casino Street, and both just feel like a copy of Greenhill Zone and Emerald Hill Zone combined (but not as good) and Casino Night Zone from. The first boss battle is even the same as the end of Green Hill Zone with Dr Robotnik (now Eggman) in his Egg Mobile-H with the swinging ball.. There's too much rehashing old ideas, which the original games never really did.

For the fastest hedgehog, he sure has gotten slower.... Things just really don't feel so inspired. The levels look nice, sure, because graphics, but just.. C'mon, make some new levels and don't just heavily reference the old ones to the point they're almost-but-not-quite the same...

This isn't Sonic The Hedgehog Remastered, it's meant to be a continuation to Sonic and Knuckles. Just.... No.....

Well...this IS a Sonic Game, and i marked it as not recommended but i wouldn't flat out say it's bad. It is, however, ABSOLUTELY frustrating. The game has got some cool levels, and it is fun overall, but why oh why, are the controls so damn SLUGGISH?!
NEVER has Sonic stopped cold in the middle of a jump when there's momentum, that's what momentum is there for, same with running. SO MANY cheap deaths because i was expecting to land ahead only to just fall. Also, when has the Spin Dash EVER slowed down on hills or steeps? It's unbelievable that having perfected the sonic formula, and made 2D sonic games for the best part of a decade, Sega would mess this up so badly? There are games with bad controls which manage to be good regardless, but a huge part of Sonic ARE the controls and physics! I pushed through and finished it, and yeah, i had fun, but...not all was sunshine and rainbows. Don't even get me STARTED on the Secret Maze cave thing, or it's boss battle. Do i recommend it? Well...to absolutely die-hard Sonic fans only, and with a price cut as i got it. Otherwise, skip to Part 2 which plays EXACTLY like Sonic should play.

This game proves that the problems of the Sonic series aren't those common complaints:

  • 3D gameplay
  • 3D graphics
  • Sonic's 1998 design, thin, with green eyes and longer legs
  • Sonic's annoying friends
  • Sonic's friends being playable characters, and even requiring you to play with them
  • Cheesy dialogues
  • Making drastic changes to the Sonic formula
  • Setting that looks nothing like the classic Sonic games
  • Characters talking
  • Sonic trying to be "Totally radical" (He always was)
  • Being too kiddy and colorful
  • Being too dark and gritty
  • Homing attack
  • Sonic Boom redesigns
  • Pandering to kids
  • Dr. Robotnik changing his name to Dr. Eggman
  • Grind rails
  • Realistic Humans
  • Not being in a SEGA console
  • Mobile games
  • Replacing voice actors
  • Having too much plot
  • Not having characters from the Sonic cartoons and comics
  • Not listening to the fans or listening to the fans
  • Moronic fans

The real problems of the Sonic series are:

  • SEGA
  • Sonic Team
  • Making changes for the worse
  • Making changes just for the heck of it
  • Not improving on good elements or changes that were done well

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Episode I is exactly what everyone wanted from a Sonic game, most of these complaints above aren't featured in this game, the game was made to be exactly like the classic Sonic games that everyone loves with some minor modern updates, and the game still disappointed many people with problems like bad level design, bad controls, and terrible physics, with a complete disregard for inertia, I'm not complaining that the physics are different from the Genesis games, they're just terrible.

It's amazing how so many small and indie developers can deliver cool 2D platformers, yet SEGA with all of their money, managed to miss a target so easy to hit.

Play Sonic Generations instead, the Classic Sonic levels are good and feel like the classic games, and the Modern Sonic levels are also good, this is the game that while not being excellent, proves that the Sonic series is not a lost cause.

From Sonic, Sonic 2 and Sonic3&Knuckles comes the sequel we have all waited for: Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Episode I, where the franchise goes back to its roots to try and redeliver the classic momentum based platformer that carried Sega to success in 1991.

Unfortunately the game does not deserve the complement of its predecessors as for the most part the game insults the classic era of the franchise with a mediocre game that has a inferiority complex - trash can't disguise itself amongst gold.

The level design does not complement the momentum and even the momentum mechanics of the game are poor or rather broken and don't hold their own to the older brothers which will leave you with nothing but a sigh as the game spoonfeeds you dash panels so that you don't earn your speed and you're not punished for mistakes.

The developers don't understand that earning your momentum gives you a fresh experience when you replay the level and you understand the layout well enough not to crash into Badniks or spikes which is why the ring system is there in the first place; so you can fail multiple times, learn from your mistakes instead of punishing you downright so once you finally learn you're allowed to hold the reins of speed and all its goodness.

Taking that away devalues what made the classic games in the first place. The game also introduces the homing attack that is forced on you and drops every bit of speed you've gained so far.

Despite what has been said about the level design, Zone 4 takes a few steps towards the right direction but it doesn't stop the game from falling on its face, you also have the terrible floaty physics and the poor (re-)designed bosses to also thank for that.

The music however is great and with the beautiful visuals are very reminiscent of the classic Sonic games are by far the strongest points of this product which thankfully don't collapse with the disappointment of the game. Even the 2.5D models are great other than Sonic's model itself oddly enough.

What makes this game bearable is the fact that it's a average platformer game when you don't compare it to its far superior prequels, the length is very great for its price and the online time attack where you can compete against other players that can have you playing for hours to see who can break and exploit the game to the finish line the fastest.

The game is by all means worth the £6 but you're better off spending a bit more of that money to buy games like DuckTales Remastered and/or Sonic 4 Episode 2, despite them having lower scores on gaming review sites they're superior in everyway.

What did you like best about Sonic 2? Was it the original, varied and yet level design? The clever bosses that never repeated an idea? The game design which is involved and challenging, but still only uses one button? Well, you better go play Sonic 2 and 3 then, because this steaming pile of refuse does the exact opposite of everything I mentioned.

The Sonic sprite is rendered with a shader to have only the three tones of blue in his Sonic 3 sprites that clashes with everything else in the game including other images of Sonic which are shown with normal shaders.

The art design is recycled from previous games wholesale with tweaks to upscale it believably to modern resolutions. And I don't mean like Sonic 2's Emerald Hill Zone compared to Green Hill Zone, Splash Hill Zone straight up lifted the tileset from Emerald Hill and there isn't a single new enemy desgin until you get to the third zone.

The boss designs are also copied shamelessly from the Megadrive games. I will grant Sega that there is purpose in revisiting the classic Ball and Chain Robotnik from Green Hill Zone Act 3 as it is one of the most iconic bosses from that era of gaming. I vocally sighed when I saw the boss of Casino Street Zone (just what you think it is, with a twinge of Carnival Night) was the Neon Claw Robotnik from Casino Night Act 2.

If that's not bad enough, they completely missed the point of the bosses as well. Oldschool Sonic bosses were great in how they were a quiz of the mechanics taught in the zone. With Ball and Chain, you had to have paitence and basic use of the platform to reach Robotnik and avoid damage. Claw forced you to use the spin dash to go up the walls to avoid him grabbing you and sucking out your rings. Both of the aforementioned things can be completely ignored with the basic application of the homing attack, begging their inclusion at all. They do go into a different and new attack pattern after 5 hits, but why not do something FULLY original if that's your goal?

The addition of the homing attack adds nothing to the game other than removing any semblance of game design based challenge based upon platforming. There is still plenty of hard work to do though; fighting the incredibly buggy, awful physics (it is possible to *walk* around a loop with no momentum) and puzzles.

Yes, I said puzzles. Someone that developed this idea thought that placing a puzzle that completely forced you to a stop until you light up a specific set of torches that lowers a wall to allow you to continue in a franchise where speed and flow are *paramount* was a good idea.

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME FOR ANY REASON. The fact that it was ever considered shippable is insulting. If you want a good modern Sonic game, vote with your wallet for Generations.
