Sonic 4: Episode 1 feels like the product of a company trying to cash in on nostalgia, quickly duck taped together at the last minute on a very meager budget. The main physics, lifted right out of Sonic Rush, feel horrible. Sonic loses every bit of momentum as you let go of the control stick, and feels like he has a load of bricks in his shoes. The level design is horrid, constantly punishing you by throwing you into bottomless pits and with incredibly random enemy placement. Bosses are just reused from old classic 2D Sonic games, and the game looks and sounds horrible. Faux-Synthy music coupled with graphics that look like Donkey Kong Country on the SNES gone horribly wrong absolutely kill any sort of positive presentation the game has.

Sonic 4: Episode 1 isn't really worth the time you can be spending just playing Sonic 1, 2 or 3K instead.

I like the idea of this game. It has beautiful graphics but... It feels like theres a l̶i̶t̶t̶l̶e̶ ̶b̶i̶t̶ lot of input lag, which is the main thing stopping Sonic 4 from being as fun as it should be.

Sonic 4 is the punishment of a hateful god on a population which has enraged him.

It is what Kratos would create to give to his worst enemies. It is the final puzzle in a Saw movie. Threats of playing this game are what Kim Jong Un uses to keep the people of North Korea in line, and those people don't even understand what a videogame is.

If you read the credits of the game backwards, Cthulhu will destroy the world... but only if you do so after beating the game.

This is a bad game. I'll enumerate.

1. Bad physics. Sonic loses all momentum immediately as soon as you release a directional key. Ducking into a roll decelerates instead instead of uncapping your max velocity.

2. Broken physics. Sonic clips through springs. He also won't ride moving platforms downward; he is in mid air as soon as the platform begins it's descent.

3. Inconsistent application of the rules. In the last zone Sonic can walk on giant gears to move them, but he falls off as soon as he revs on them. Sometimes the lock on system just won't lock on.

4. Art design. It's occasionally difficult to tell if something is a platform or just a decorative doodad in the foreground. It's kinda ugly, too; there isn't even any AA.

5. Level design. One level has pistons that slam upward into spikes. They have a longish cycle no indication that they're about to activate. If you see them, you have to slam to a stop and wait for them to activate before proceding. Another level sees Sonic speeding along in pitch darkness, carrying a torch that illuminates the ground three feet in front of him. I haven't even mentioned the puzzles. Why are there puzzles in a Sonic game?

Avoid avoid avoid.

It is if SEGA created some platformer and decided to put Sonic in it.

Pretty bad, actually. While an more-or-less-OK game, it looks more like a bad fangame than an official sonic game. Also, the special stages and some small parts of the main game are complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t. Playing as supersonic is nice, though. Got it in a bundle, probably not worth it otherwise, even if you're a hardcore sonic fan.

After buying Sonic Generations and loving it, I jumped at the chance to try Sonic 4. A 2d based game that trys to capture the spirit of the original Genesis games? What could possibly go wrong?

Turns out a lot of things. Whilst it's true that the games are 2D and that we play as Sonic, this doesn't feel like a Sonic game. The physics are unnatural in comparison to the originals or to Generations. It handles poorly and the implementation of the homing attack causes more problems than benefits created. The music is rather dull and very repetitive. It doesn't help that out of frustation I just alt tabbed out of the game and closed the game via my taskbar and that the music didn't stop playing despite the gaming having been closed. Map design is also sketchy. On one map in particular, I have just died three times in a row due to the necessity of using the homing attack on carefully placed opponents to pass a giant gap in which a fall will instantly kill you. This is all fine and dandy except for the bit of the end platform being far away from the final monster in which you dash in to.

Simply put, I'm not having any fun playing this and if this were a modern players first experience with any Sonic game then they are going to be left with a poor taste in their mouth.

TL;DR I would never pay full price, but for what I paid ($10 Humble Bundle for almost every Sonic game) I feel it was a fun and frustrating few hours spent. But this recommendation barely gets a thumbs up even at that price, which I will explain below.

First and foremost, the options and settings are a joke. The resolutions don't go above 1600x1200, and you have to manually change an option just to use a controller, otherwise it simply won't work. There is no way to remap what few buttons you need to play the game, which still would have been nice. In addition to that, this feels more like a remastered version of the first Sonic game, rather than it's own standalone sequel.

There are a few improvements however. They have included the targetting system which is a nice addition over the Genesis counterparts. I personally felt the graphics were quite nice as well. Also as in the original, the Casino levels are by far my favorite levels in almost any side-scroller.

However, this game gave me a frustration that I haven't felt since I was a child playing SNES/Genesis games. Sonic is nearly invincible as long as you keep a few rings handy. As in almost every Sonic game, they counter this by adding many one-hit kill traps and pitfalls that feel really cheap when you first come across them. In addition to this, you have to be completely still to do a dash, otherwise you'll jump like an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ all over the place. Also, the final version of Eggman took me about 20 lives in trial-and-error before I was able to take him down. But overall it was satisfying to play and beat, and it felt frustrating just like the old-school games. However the Chaos Emerald levels are more luck than skill, and I won't be bothering to complete them.

All in all, it's worth a few bucks, but at full price, I'd stay away.

The first video game I ever owned was Sonic The Hedgehog 2. I was five and horrible at it, yet could not be happier. Through practice and wonder I started a lifelong journey of gaming.

With that in mind, do not try to compare. Sonic 4 means well, and in fact has a fantastic soundtrack, but its design is slightly off even for a Sonic game. The purpose of Sonic is fast (thus the catchphrase), and this game tries to throw in other conventional platforming design that really runs down on your propulsion. You find yourself being stopped and jumping far more often than other Sonic games.

On top of all that, the bosses are absolutely horrible. None are interesting until late game, and for some reason to me the final boss was 10 times harder than all others. Even with great sound, they decided to make the music for bosses really abysmal and dull.

I enjoyed this game for what it was, and would even recommend it for free play, but it truly is slow, boring, and unsatisfying.

I'm just glad I got this for cheap on a Humble bundle. It all just feels kinda wrong, and controlls really weird. It's essentially a mobile ported game to PC. I was really hoping for more from this, but sadly am dissapointed.

Man, I wasn't expecting Sonic 4 to be this horrible. The graphics look like Sonic 3D Blast, the music is not that good, and the first two levels are obviously recreations of Green Hill and Casino Night (renamed Splash Hill and Casino Street...). The controls and physics are weird, letting go of the move stick in mid air just stops all of your momentum dead where you stand (or float I say), the spin dash is usually slower than just running, and Sonic's running animation just looks plain unnatural. I rage-quitted on Mad Gear act 1 because Sonic's slow acceleration made it impossible for me to outrun the crushing platforms near the end.

Honestly, I'm just glad I got this in the 25th Anniversary Humble Bundle instead of spending $10, so I'm not even mad because I also received the classics Sonic 1, 2, 3, and CD.

This may very well be one of the only positive reviews on steam for this game, and I leave it shamelessly. I just got done with the task of collecting all 7 choas emeralds, and was filled with a sweet frustration I have not experienced since I was a tiny boy of 8 years old playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2, trying and succeeding in beating all those special stages. The sense of nostalgia is undeniable. I can't believe the entitlement that the gaming community has sometimes, especially Sonic the Hedgehog "fans". If you want the old games, go ahead and just play those. If you want a love letter from Sonic Team, as they try to give fans a familiar but fresh experience, at least give this a shot.

Thanks Sonic Team, I appreciate the feels ^.^

When the character's theme is movement, you'd think it'd feel better than dragging a dead insect through glue using the weakest telekenisis imagined. Horizontal motion is so sticky, 1-eyed and blind drunk you can juggle sonic on a circular pinball bumper till the time runs out.
It's bad, HOW can basic horizontal movment feel so painful?

Welcome to Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Episode 1.

ALARM ALARM ALARM.

I was going to write a review explaining how bad this game is, but then I got to the-

ALARM ALARM ALARM.

Mad Gear level where the same awful buzzing alarm plays for the entire 4 minute stage.

The audio guy should be ashamed. Play it if you must, but you be ready to mute your speakers or down some advil.

The puzzle-solving is really bad. There is little consistency to the rules of how objects work and no hints. There are a lot of deaths you can't avoid the first time because you have no idea they are coming. Feels like a hollow shell of a Sonic game, unfortunately.

The sequel fans have waited 16 years for is finally here!

That's what SEGA proudly proclaims at the top of this page. And just from looking at screenshots, you would think that this would be the case. It looks like it's a return to form for the Sonic games, even if it's in episodic form (for whatever reason). This is not the case.

Instead of revisiting the fun, fast gameplay of the originals, this game tries to mix things up a bit - and falls into the exact same pitfalls that 3D games in the series have been trapped by for years. The developers sought to add the lock-on jump mechanic that was introduced in the Sonic Adventure series to this game, to no success. It seems like a feature that was added on to help players traverse the levels better - but only because the levels are hard to get through in the first place.

The difficulty in this game isn't the problem - it's the totally incoherent level design. Sonic the Hedgehog was a series known for its lightning-fast gameplay and ability to speed through levels as fast as you can. More recent games, however, focus on putting as many obstacles as possible in your way in order to slow the player down or even make them come to a full stop. One of these such obstacles in this game are vines - no matter how much momentum you have, you have a 50/50 chance of keeping that momentum when you go to make your jump, requiring you to stop what you're doing and build momentum on said vine in order to continue to the next one.

SEGA and Sonic Team have obviously lost their touch when it comes to the Sonic series. The Sonic Rush series on the Nintendo DS did a much better job of carrying on the 2D tradition. Let DIMPS develop all your 2D Sonics, SEGA. You'd do everyone a favor.

Instead of getting this game, maybe fill your 2D Sonic cravings with other games like Freedom Planet or the remastered version of Sonic CD on Steam. Don't buy this retreaded garbage.

Remember that lightning fast game you played as a kid? Well, this isn't it.

This is more akin to a slow painful bowel movment during which you're forced to listen to terrible music.
