Source Filmmaker is available for free as a public beta.


The Source Filmmaker (SFM) is the movie-making tool built and used by us here at Valve to make movies inside the Source game engine. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

To get started, just click the button above to install. The SFM includes all the base game assets from Team Fortress 2 along with assets from some of the first “Meet the Team” short films.


Once you're up and running, here are some general resources for finding help and learning how to get the most out of the Source Filmmaker.



    • OS: Windows 7 / Vista (Windows 7 64 bit suggested)
    • Processor: 3.0 GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 (or higher) or AMD64X2 (or higher)
    • Memory: 2GB (4 GB suggested)
    • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 200 series card or better, or AMD Radeon 3000 series or better (NVIDIA GeForce 400 series or AMD Radeon 5000 series preferred)
    • Monitor: 1366 x 768 (1920 x 1080 suggested)
    • Hard Drive: At least 15 GB of Space
    • Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible USB headset with mic (suggested)

You know what? Everyone should at least give it a try; in my opinion, it's the greatest thing Valve has ever released to the public. Unlike the complexity of Source SDK for those who aren't completely fluent in the Source engine, and the informal simplicity of Gmod for those who want something a bit more advenced, SFM is the perfect balance between the two. You don't need to be an expert to create some fine-looking content. Sure, it takes getting used to, but once you're beyond that, it's smooth sailing. Trust me, if you've ever wanted to make a neat poster or a structured video, look no further. SFM answers to a lot of things, and you should at least give it a little attention.

P.S. SFM is not constricted to TF2 resources, which I would assume some people believe. Any asset ever used in some form of the Source engine can be implemented into SFM. Sure, it may take some tweaking to get some assets working, but this is a rarity, and when this issue arrives, it typically is not that difficult to solve (a quick Google search will fix ya up).

P.P.S. If there's something you really want to see made, try out SFM before you send in a commission. With a little effort you can make really great-looking pictures and/or videos.

This animation software tool is pretty entertaining and good. For those persons who used any animation program, either 2D or 3D graphics, with the inclusion of a system of movements frame by frame, It will be a very familiar tool, where the possibilities to understand its operation run by many, and in other cases, it would take nothing to do so. For those who had never used any animation program, well, this is an easy and confortable way to start making animations on your computer, a great way to adapt to the use of the 3D system animations. I recommend it!

If you tried the leaked version in 2009, you're in for a treat. This official release is vastly improved and crashes much less. If you're interested in animation and filmmaking, try it out. With the help of a few tutorials on Valve's SFM channel, you should be good to start. Don't expect to be the next viral sensation in a night, though.

Oh god how did I not make a recommendation to this before?
This is one of the greatest things Valve has released. I didn't know ♥♥♥♥ about 3D animations before until this tool came out. I was a professional* Gmodder before and this software kinda changed my life, since I can now make high-quality videos, literally. This software is simple to use with an intuitive interface, the hardest thing is, obviously, the animations (practice a lot and never give up).
So if you wish to make awesome movies ANY WAY you want, don't waste money in useless softwares and download this.
