Stillwater: Coastal Maine is a small, first-person retreat on an imagined stretch of the Maine coast. Explore the house and shore, choose the light and weather, and spend a little time in a place that feels familiar.

Find your favorite corner

Walk from the painted kitchen to the book-lined library, look out from the room above the roof, or settle into a chair on the porch. Open a book, switch on a reading lamp, and listen to the coast. Save a favorite view to return to on your next visit.

The library holds 263 classics, complete and unabridged: Austen and Dickens, Jewett and Thoreau, sea stories, poetry and natural history. Take one down and read it by the window.

Small ways to spend an afternoon

Cast a line from the old dock and release your catch. Walk the tide line and look for sea glass and shells; a storm washes more ashore, and your finds collect in a jar on the kitchen windowsill. Go for a swim, split some kindling, or play a few notes in the parlor. Upstairs, make a simple color study of the coast and keep it on the easel. Each activity is a quiet way to spend a few minutes during your visit.

Come back in another light

A summer porch. Sea fog over the cove. Autumn among the pines. Snow on the grounds and a warm room inside. Choose the season, weather, and time of day, or watch a nor'easter come in over the Atlantic. The same places invite another look as the coast changes.

A place close at hand

Stillwater is one house, its gardens, and the nearby shore. Its open-ended visits and simple activities are made for a short break or a longer stay. Sea and wind sounds, an optional score of fifteen original pieces for piano and strings, and adjustable walking and viewing controls let you make the visit comfortable.
