Why Early Access?

“The creation and all of the development for Ant Empire is done by one person, myself. Because of this, I believe Ant Empire has a lot of room to grow. In fact, I am depending on the community to help with proposing new ideas and helping this game find the perfect niche. During Early Access, I plan to take Ant Empire from its current state of being a fun, nostalgic recreation of some older games to a unique and modern masterpiece.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I will stay in Early Access for as long as the demand for new features and improvements exists. Ant Empire will likely be in Early Access for a year, and during this time will undergo many updates, changes, and continuing to add new content.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“New features and content is planned to be the primary focus of Early Access, with tons of balancing. The underlying base of the game is solid, so now Ant Empire's true potential of featuring as a deep and unique strategy game is higher than ever in Early Access.

New species will be added, new maps to battle on, additional researches and perks, campaign improvements, new colony focuses, and an overall rework to game play over time. New modes are likely to be added, as well as win conditions and different types of scenarios in addition to the existing Death Match and Sudden Death modes.

Another big difference between Early Access and the full version is that Early Access contains the inspirations of just one person, while the full version will embody the entire community.
I believe the best comparison is that a group of people working on a project (when the team is truly committed and doesn't consist of one person doing all the work) will almost always have better results than those of an individual. Until now, Ant Empire has been the work of a single person. The potential with a group of people contributing to Ant Empire is unlimited.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Ant Empire has been under creation for over a year now and has gone through many iterations and changes. There is currently enough content to release the game and only do minor changes and balancing tweeks-- however I've found among testers that large updates and new features are the best way to grow a game. I really plan to take advantage of the stability of Ant Empire and use resources to enrich the game as opposed to doing update after update of bug fixes.
I hope Ant Empire does not stop growing; however I can feel comfortable knowing that if it does, I'll have created a thorough and debugged game that can be enjoyed by anyone.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It is unlikely that the price of Ant Empire will ever increase, even after Early Access ends. In fact, Ant Empire will be apart of many Steam sales to ensure everyone can enjoy this game at a very affordable price. Gas Lantern Games has significantly low operating costs except for the addition of new content. In addition, my desire to share gaming with everyone will keep Ant Empire at a low price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I will read all Steam comments, Reddit posts, Discord chat, direct messages, and emails to ensure that anyone who has an idea, suggestion, complaint, or compliment will be heard. The ideas of just one person can have a big impact in how Ant Empire grows.

The communities of other games have often been very passionate and have had a large influence in how the developers proceed. In other cases, the developers know exactly what they want in terms of the production of a game, and seldom consider outsider input.

Lots Of Updates! Getting Ready For Testing

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the lack of updates. I plan on providing more frequent updates as launch gets closer. For now, I have been finalizing many mechanics and adding some additional features to allow for the UI to give a better experience.

Achievements have received a huge update and are ready to integrate with Steam. The icons are still in progress, but there will be over 40 different achievements that can be tracked in the game or through Steam. A pop-up within the game lets you know every 25% towards an achievement that is earned. (Actual icons for achievements are still being worked on)

Ant Stats
The stats screen has been updated to compare a bit more easily the strengths and weaknesses of each ant with visual indicators.

Other UI Updates
Many other UI changes have taken place. The species selection screen is now broken down into tabs and is easier to navigate.

Tactical Colony Info
This is one of my favorite changes. The Tactical screen now displays the health of each colony and its rating. Everything can still be hovered on to provide additional information, but this change allows the player to see everything at once and make decisions a bit more easily.

The campaign is being finalized, but is completed for the most part. Select a species and pick from several different battles to play. Each battle is on a different map and has randomized objectives, events, rewards, opponents, and more. There are dozens of different types of objectives, ranging from gathering food, spending research, dealing damage, and many more. After a battle is won (or lost... you get 3 lives) you get points to spend for bonuses that remain for the rest of the campaign.

New Features Update

Hey everyone!

I have been busy creating some more features and mechanics the last few weeks for Ant Empire, and am ready to share these.

  • 3 "Traits" have been created for each species
  • 6 New Research Upgrades (32 total)
  • 2 New Perks (12 total)
  • 1 New Map (5 total)
  • 1 New Colony Focus
  • Influence Re-work


Food Trackers - Minor and major workers have a 2% chance to eat enemy food while attacking
Polygynists - The Polygyne research is completed
Storage Experts - Food storage costs are reduced by 20%

Formic Acid - Soldiers and Super Soldiers have a 4% chance to lower enemy production
Twin Soldiers - Soldiers have a 3% chance of being born with a twin
Ruthless - Starts with Return Attacker 2

Resourceful - Bonus tiles cost the same as regular tiles
Offensive Defense - Nests recieve a 2% bonus to defense while attacking
Nuisance - New nests start with 11 influence

Fungus Gardens - Colony grows fungus automatically from nest size
Tunnel Bandits - Soldiers and Super Soldiers have a 4% chance to reduce enemy colony's nest size
Nest Specialists - Nests can grow larger by 15 cubic centimeters

Genesis - Soldiers have a 2% chance of mutating into a princess while hatching
Relocate Bivouac - Bivouacs can be relocated using influence and gain permanent bonuses
Territorial - Tiles can't be flipped by enemies and cannot claim tiles


Queen Comfort - Gain Production from stored food
Workforce - Workers cost less influence to purchase
Renown - Each Princess gives an attack bonus
Clout - Queens generate influence
Variable Diet - Workers that are foraging have a chance to eat without using stored food
Outposts - Each tile owned in excess of 20 gives a small amount of production


Influential - Gain range when claiming tiles for the Colony
Add Queen - Adds a Queen to the Colony (also requires 2 princesses and Polygyne)

New Map

Farm has been added as the 5th map, and the 2nd map that is for 3-players.

Colony Focus

Colony Pride has been added as a focus, increasing all influence gained by 15%.

Influence Re-work

Currently, Influence is used for claiming tiles and removing enemy claims on the map. Workers can now be purchased at the cost of influence.

Princesses also give influence each turn, and give less production.

About This Game

Ant Empire is a tactical strategy and management game set in a world where ant species battle to become the top empire. This deeply detailed and nostalgic turn-based simulation is a mix of many popular older games-- but with a much more modern feel. Select from 5 unique species that feature characteristics in the game based on how the species actually behaves naturally.

Undertake in a unique campaign as each species, or battle in free play with a variety of settings, maps, and objectives. Earn progress towards Steam achievements, unlock new species, or simply try new strategies to build your empire.

Colonies develop and become more powerful each day. Nests can grow to become military strongholds, economy powerhouses, research havens, defensive outposts, or even breeding grounds for new colonies-- and much more. Each colony has multiple ways to let them specialize. You can:
  • Adjust the ratio of workers, soldiers, and princesses being produced.
  • Dictate what the workers are doing, rather it be foraging, digging, or nursing.
  • Select a colony focus that gives the colony a particular bonus.
  • Choose the type of food the queen eats, giving different bonuses.
  • Activate abilities such as "Set Food Trap", "Collapse Tunnels", "Add Queen", "Public Works", and "Sacrifice Princess".
  • Go into defense mode, vastly increasing a colony's ability to defend attacks but reducing the economy's power.
  • Build perks to gain bonuses for the colony.
  • Use influence to claim nearby tiles, or remove the claim from tiles owned by enemy colonies.
  • Attack enemy nests, or reinforce friendly nests.
  • Select the type of nest during creation.
  • More abilities and features are in the works and to be added.

Use your ants to attack other colonies, or reinforce friendly nests. Soldiers are much more powerful than workers, but do not perform tasks such as foraging for food, digging to grow the nest, and nursing to increase production. Princesses are used to create new nests around the map.

Research upgrades by gaining research points each day. Research points unlock new features, improve existing actions, increase limits, and increase stats. Perk points are improvements that benefit a particular colony. Perks are harder to come by than research points. Influence is used to claim nearby tiles for the colony, and remove the claims of enemy colonies.

There are a ton of additional features-- a daily log to summarize events, a beautiful graph that compares different stats for each species over time, stats that shows the details of all the ants for every species in a side-by-side window, a tutorial to cover all the basics of Ant Empire, random events, achievements, auto-saves, and much more.
