What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Balloonatics is at the perfect stage for an Early Access release. We have a solid game with multiplayer support for up to 6 players, and solo challenges for people to test their skills. Early access will allow us to get immediate feedback on the mechanics, balance, and fun of the game before we expand with larger matches, more challenges, and more game modes.

We have plans to introduce many more weapons and levels, with a few already in development, and we’re hoping that community feedback will help spark some great ideas.

With Balloonatics, we want VR and non-VR players to be able to play together without either having any significant advantage or disadvantage. We’ve worked hard on balancing the game mechanics to achieve this (special thanks to our beta testers!), but we need feedback from the larger community that early access can provide.

As a small team of 2 people, it will take time to put together the rest of the assets we have planned for the game. New characters, levels, game modes, weapons, and of course customizing of both your basket and pilot. It is an amazing amount of work and we are very proud of what we have accomplished so far. With the game ready to play today, we are eager to get Balloonatics in players hands now while we continue to make improvements and work towards a full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to remain in early access for approximately one year while we complete the features and assets we feel are needed for a full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

Features and Content at Full Release
(These may change as we receive community feedback, and will be released throughout early access)
  • 8 - 10 characters
  • 5 - 6 arenas
  • Pilot customization including hats, suits and gloves. Vehicle customization including fan, wheel, lever, flag, balloons, and more. (Note that these will be cosmetic changes. We will not include any sort of ‘pay to win’ through customizations)
  • Lots of new weapons!!!
  • Player stats
  • Achievements
  • Larger multiplayer matches
  • Custom multiplayer matches
  • Full controller support
  • New multiplayer game modes (we have a few in mind, but we want player feedback).

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core of Balloonatics is already here. You can play 6 single player challenges and you can play multiplayer matches of 1v1, 2v2, 3v3 and up to 6 player Free For All. Larger multiplayer matches and support for larger parties is already in the works and will be available soon.

There are currently 5 characters and 3 multiplayer arenas, each with their own surprises.

We have a variety of weapons to suit different player styles, with many new weapons in testing that will be released shortly.

There are leaderboards for multiplayer and solo challenges.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We feel the current price suits the features of content of the game in early access. We may consider raising the price as we expand the game or at the time of release, but have no specific plans at this time.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are hoping to receive a lot of constructive feedback and ideas from users that will shape the development of the game. We have a lot of ideas, but we know you do too! Changes and new features that we plan will be posted to gather Community feedback.

Balloonatics has evolved thanks to the support we’ve received from friends and early beta testers, and we expect to see continued improvements with feedback from the larger Community.”

Patch 4

Bots are on the way, but first we wanted to implement some changes to gameplay that we have been developing with our community of players. It was important for us to get these changes in before finishing bots.

Gameplay Changes
  • Shooting While Driving - Players can now grab and use weapons, throw items, and load/shoot the slingshot, all while driving.
  • Weapon Rack - There is now a rack in the player's basket to hold collected weapons, making it easier to grab weapons while driving. Players are now limited to 3 items at a time. This results in weapons being used more frequently, less stockpiling, and overall much faster and fluent gameplay.
  • Basket Sizes - Baskets are no longer sized to your play space in VR. All baskets are the same and allow for both standing and room scale VR play. Everything is reachable and feels much better in VR.
  • New Tutorial - We have created a new tutorial to help new and existing players better understand these new gameplay features.
  • Slingshot Loading - Slingshot can be quick-loaded/unloaded with the weapon you are carrying or with a spike ball from your ball rack in non-VR. Items can be dropped onto slingshot to load in VR, and grabbed again to unload.

Weapons
  • Darwin's weapon now locks onto a target before you fire. Look at a target with your laser eye, and once it locks on you can fire your missile and it will chase down the target.
  • Klause's ice now melts faster when freezing fans.
  • All exploadable weapons now have an improved splash damage algorithm. This includes Darwins Missile, Merves Banana Bombs, Bazooka and Air Mines.
  • Saws now have a trail when shot, making it easier to see where they go.
  • Weapons that have ammo will be dropped once empty, immediately freeing up your weapon rack slot.

Controller Support and Rebinding
  • Full Controller Support with editable bindings
  • Editable key bindings when using keyboard/mouse

General Improvements
  • UI Basket screen buttons animated on hover.
  • UI sliders in VR now improved and match controllers pointer position as you drag.
  • Projectile shooting and item throwing physics accuracy improved.
  • Scoreboard improved (consistent layout and team colors)
  • Local settings now take priority over steam cloud settings.
  • VR players now positioned correctly when driving.

Removal of 32-Bit Support

According to the Steam hardware reports for Balloonatics, every single player is running a 64-bit operating system. With that in mind, we've decided to remove 32-bit support for the game and release only 64-bit builds. This will speed up our testing and release process and allow us to make 64-bit specific performance optimizations. If there is any interest we may consider adding 32-bit support back as we get closer to leaving early access.

We'd love your feedback on these changes. Visit our steam community or join us on discord: https://discord.gg/9g94UV

About This Game

Pilot your basket with skill and speed while collecting weapons to sink your opponents.

Throw some floating mines or use your slingshot to launch a box of angry bees at your opponent. Put up shield walls to protect yourself while you strategically plan your next move. Guns are too easy! Let's see how well you aim when you have to account for wind and weight. Collect, dodge, and attack to be the last Balloonatic in the air.

Playable in both VR and non-VR

Play against (or team up with) VR players and non-VR players at the same time. Balloonatics has been developed with both types of players in mind, and balanced to keep things fair no matter how you choose to play.

Team Battles

Invite your friends and take on your opponents while you navigate your way to victory!

Solo Challenges

Put your piloting skills to the test in our single player challenges. Compete on the leader-boards to see how your skills stack up.

Weapons!

Like to play strategic? Deploy some smoke and set a mine trap for your enemies.
Defensive? Set up shields and use your slingshot to take out targets at a distance.
Or just rush in with a bazooka and saw slinger and hope for the best. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Peaceful Environments

Thunderstorms? Falling lava rocks? Giant saws? Yeah, our environments are as peaceful as they come.
