What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Broke Protocol is a huge undertaking. In terms of scope, size, content - the final vision is something that is just massive in scale. And the best way to ensure cohesion in such a large game is to get feedback from the community as we make incremental progress.

Early Access provides the best opportunity for the community to have a hand in directing development. We will listen closely to player suggestions to give out users what they want. In this way, we can provide the best city life role-playing experience on the market.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Approximately 2 years, with the full release planned for August 2019 along with Mac, Linux, and perhaps console versions as well.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We have a stable game foundation in our Early Access Release, but the full version will bring a level of polish and TONS of new features for users to have fun with:
  • Much larger map with desert, farmland, forest, and military base
  • Expanded city with enter-able casinos, sports arenas, club, bar, cinema, and clothing shops.
  • Government system with elected officials, vote system, custom city laws, and emergency responder controls
  • Random city events from riots, storms, fires, races, airdrops, etc.
  • Promotions within careers paths and gangs depending on performance - DONE
  • Different levels of AI response, from Street Cops, to SWAT teams, and Army soldiers - DONE
  • World editor for building custom cities - DONE

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of the game should be fully playable with some experimental features (like Offline mode). There's already a full city map with vehicles, aircraft, voice chat, jobs, weapons, items, apartments, dynamic weather, and more.

Early Access gives users a substantial discount before the full release, allows a sneak peak at incoming features, and enables community input for steering the future development. Feature upgrades are to be expected weekly throughout the Early Access period.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will be raised before the full release of the game as new features and content is added.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I'm making this game for the community. I have no investors, backers, or publishers - it's all for you. There is a roadmap on the official website, discussion forums, and Discord server for real-time feedback.

The userbase is the backbone of any role-playing game, and my goal is to server the players' interests in the best way possible. With your help, we can build an amazing city sandbox for the best role-playing on Steam.”

Editor Update – Out On Steam Today

The Editor Update is arriving for Broke Protocol on Steam. This brings the game up to version 0.91 as we march towards a 1.0 release. Many longstanding issues have been addressed but the main feature is the new Editor upgrade that make world building easier and more powerful. For example, you can now hide different layers on the map in order to make selecting and focusing on the work at hand more intuitive.

A new Overdraw rendering mode has been added to make map errors much more obvious. Overlapped meshes will be highlighted in various shades without any texture clutter, making it easier to find small world builder placement or scaling mistakes. Make the cleanest map possible and not only will it look better, but perform better and allow AI to create accurate NavMeshes.

Basic building blocks in various colors have been added. You no longer need to use Seawalls to construct custom designs. Now creators have these basic shapes and can stretch and scale them to create almost anything imaginable. Also a transparent glass block is included for windows or glass cases.

Waypointing for AI was a real headache. But now it’s made a bit easier with the addition of Auto-waypoint connections. When you have a waypoint selected, quickly add a connecting next waypoint by clicking “Create Next.” This will create and connect the next waypoint automatically and you can move it into place. Note: to close a waypoint loop, you still need to manually link the final waypoint.

And most importantly, curved road support is finally here. Under the World sub-directory, are a couple new Spline objects. These can be used to create any curved surface easier using Bezier curves. Place nodes at each bend in the road using the similar system as waypoints. Rotate the nodes to control banking and scale the blue handle to control the sharpness of curve.

Splines were added to support curved roads than can fit to any heightmap or terrains. Eventually, Broke Protocol will be able to import terrains heightmaps, roads, and satellite imagery from any real-world location using GPS coordinates. These will provide a quick town layout that creators can build on for quick and authentic real-world locations.
Plenty more in this update however, check out the full Patch Notes below or check out the preview.

Airborne Update Releasing – Get High

Another big update long in the works is releasing today. Check Steam today for the Airborne Update v0.90 where you’ll find changes from huge new transports, to longstanding bugfixes and engine upgrades.

The biggest new update in this version is support for steerable parachutes. If you have a parachute pack in your inventory, you can deploy them while airborne by pressing the F key or using the action menu. These parachute packs add another dimension to getaways, heists, and aircraft… malfunctions.

You can find packs at the airport that are resupplied every few minutes. Pick one up or share with your crew in order to craft unique scenarios. You can use them to plant a rooftop sniper or stage an airborne attack of the military base for example.

Luckily, the parachutes are easy to control. using WASD + QE keys – similar to the helicopters in-game. The parachutes use actual physics so try to maintain some speed if you want to efficiently cover distance. And ease in for a soft landing or you’ll be hurting.

What good would parachutes be without a suitable plane to deliver you and your crew? At the airport, you’ll find a huge new cargo plane just made for that. The Hercules can carry you and 100 passengers (Really) to wherever you need to drop in. Don’t forget to pack your parachutes beforehand.

New physics should make aircraft a bit easier to manage, but you still want to assign a skilled pilot for any planned drops. Aircraft like this are in preparation for larger supported maps coming in the future, so hang tight for more news.

Tons of other changes made it in, from seating ability anywhere, hitbox and mesh fixes, and graphics tweaks and optimizations. Loads of other updates also under the hood due to a big engine upgrade. See the full patch notes below.
