What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“While prioritizing features and making design decisions in our previous game, we kept asking ourselves, “what do the players want?”

Early Access allows us to answer that question right away instead of playing guessing games. We want to invite the players into the feedback loop to collaborate with us as we build the best possible school simulation game that we can.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect that development in Early Access will be for at least 12 months and probably more, depending on player feedback and interest in adding features to the game.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“There are many features that are still being designed that will make the final game much more complete and full featured than the current version of the game. These include:

  • Deeper and more complex staff and students

  • Research tree and/or school specialization

  • Subject scheduling

  • Varsity sports

  • Truancy, delinquency, bullying, and other serious issues that schools deal with

  • School Prestige, and competing with others for the “Best School”

  • Setting School Policies

  • Weather, Random Events, and Disasters

  • Mod support

The final list of features will ultimately depend in the feedback that we get. We cannot promise we'll be able to have all these features in the game, what's important is we get to work on the features that the community wants.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable and has enough mechanics to keep you busy through a few in-game school years. Systems, like cooking, cleaning, hygiene, hunger, etc are already complete. There isn't a full fledged tutorial but a simpler to-do list system that guides the player on what to do. It helps to be familiar with games like Prison Architect and Rimworld since the controls like zoning and building are very similar. There are basic sound effects and music, and more will be added as time progresses.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the price will be increased after launch, but will still be competitively priced with similar games.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will be actively watching and participating in the discussion board here, on reddit, facebook, and other social media. We will also have a polling system in the game where players can vote on which feature they're most excited for us to work on next.

We can never promise that all suggested features will be implemented, but the more excited you guys are about a certain feature, the more excited we will be to make it come to life.”

Build 0.2.40 Brings bugfixes, optimizations, and a PE Field Zone

Hey everyone we're back with a small update that brings bugfixes, optimizations, and a PE Field!

New Field Zone

The Field zone is where the kids go out to exercise! We finally have an area where the kids will go out to exercise during PE class. Classes will take turns using the Field. As of now the exercises they do are pretty limited (ie they just do jumping jacks) but we will be updating this much more in the near future.

Bugs Fixed:

-Less slowdown when accepting new transferee students
-Made optimization to game code to (hopefully) make the game run smoother
-Fixed bug where workers no longer work after lunch break (we are pro workers' rights, but this was too much!)
-Students hanging out and not going to class from 6th to 8th periods
-Delivery trucks now arrive, when previously they were observed not to make deliveries (we were able to come to an agreement with the truck drivers' Union)

Important Note

To make sure this build is safe, we will be uploading it to the Candidate build first. If you want to try out the new field zone and check if your bugs have been resolved, please move to the Candidate branch.

To access the Candidate Branch :

1) Go to your game library and right click on Academia School Simulator
2) In the pop up window, find and click on Properties.
3) In the properties window, click on the Betas Tab
4) Under Enter beta access code to unlock private betas type :
academiacandidate
5) Click on "check code"
6) Under "Select the beta you would like to opt into" click on the dropdown
menu and click on "candidate"
7) You should now have access to the latest candidate build

“I initially forget to put in bathrooms, though I'm sharp enough to notice that my students keep running outside to pee in the bushes. Let the trauma and embarrassment of school life begin!”

“Academia: School Simulator’s Steam page suggests you can make the high school of your dreams. But my school, Leo’s Learning Emporium ended up as more of a dystopian nightmare.”

We Are Still In Early Access

It has been brought to our attention that the game is no longer set as "Early Access". We are not aware of when or why this happened. We want to let everyone know that the game is still very much an Early Access game, and the usual caveats apply. We have reached out to Steam already to see if we can resolve this quickly, but before buying this game please be aware that there will still be bugs, and many things will be lacking. I am reposting the original Early Access description below for your reference.

We hope that no one was misled by this, and we sincerely apologize for any mistakes on our end.

Why Early Access

While prioritizing features and making design decisions in our previous game, we kept asking ourselves, “what do the players want?”
Early Access allows us to answer that question right away instead of playing guessing games. We want to invite the players into the feedback loop to collaborate with us as we build the best possible school simulation game that we can.

Approximately How Long Will This Game Be In Early Access?

We expect that development in Early Access will be for at least 12 months and probably more (edit: given we are already 9 months in, rest assured this will probably mean more), depending on player feedback and interest in adding features to the game.

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

There are many features that are still being designed that will make the final game much more complete and full featured than the current version of the game. These include:
  • Deeper and more complex staff and students
  • Research tree and/or school specialization (currently in progress)
  • Subject scheduling (lunch/recess can be resecheduled now. direct subject scheduling is much more complicated and will still be decided on)
  • Varsity sports
  • Truancy, delinquency, bullying, and other serious issues that schools deal with (delinquency added)
  • School Prestige, and competing with others for the “Best School” (implemented, but will add more mechanics in teh future)
  • Setting School Policies
  • Weather, Random Events, and Disasters
  • Mod support (Now has mod support for localization, uploading maps, and adding custom images)
The final list of features will ultimately depend in the feedback that we get. We cannot promise we'll be able to have all these features in the game, what's important is we get to work on some of the features that the community wants.

What is the current state of the Early Access version

The game is fully playable and has enough mechanics to keep you busy through a few in-game school years. There are basic sound effects and music, and more will be added as time progresses.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

Yes, the price will be increased after launch, but will still be competitively priced with similar games.

How are you planning on involving the community in your dev process?

We will be actively watching and participating in the discussion board here, on reddit, facebook, and other social media.
We can never promise that all suggested features will be implemented, but the more excited you guys are about a certain feature, the more excited we will me to make it come to life.

About This Game

From the artist of Prison Architect and the studio that brought you Political Animals comes Academia : School Simulator, a simulation game that lets you design, construct, and manage the high school of your dreams! Student motivation is driven by various needs, including hygiene, hunger, and discipline, and they'll become even more complex as time goes on, eventually competing in school competitions like spelling bees and even falling in love.

Teachers are unique, with different subject specialties and degrees. Eventually they will also have their own motivations that need to be satisfied so they can keep teaching at the highest level.

Students that look like zombies and eat brains? why not? Want to run a school where the students are literally prisoners? Whatever floats your boat! Image mods are available now, and language and other mods will follow in the future.
