What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Since Visage is the first game developed by SadSquare Studio, the Early Access version of the game will provide us with valuable and much needed data to finalize developments.

Visage is hard in ways that could be unexpected coming from a modern game. Information on the game mechanics is scarce, and is designed to be that way, in an attempt to create a more immersive experience. Such difficulties could potentially prevent the modern player from enjoying the game at its fullest. The Early Access will help us gather critical information on exactly how we should approach the game's difficulty.

General Feedback

It will help us gather general feedback from both the players that already enjoy the more slow-paced, atmospheric horror genre, and the players that join in out of curiosity. This feedback will help us mold the final experience into something that all players can enjoy.

On to a more technical topic. We have tested the game on multiple hardware specifications, and the tests revealed positive results, but being a newly founded studio with little experience, we want to be absolutely positive that the game runs well on all hardware that meets the determined minimal hardware specifications.

It will help bring more coffee on the developers' desk.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan the game to be in an Early Access state for at least 4 months. Content will be added as it is finalized.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Content such as the following will be added to the Early Access as it is finalized:
  • More chapters
  • More "Paranormal Events"
  • More "Random Events"
  • More enemies
  • More vastly different environments
  • More "Sanity" mechanics
  • More languages
  • More achievements
  • More content in relation to the players' feedback

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access provides the player with content that represents approximately 4 to 6 hours of game time. The player has limited access to the environment and is able to play one chapter out of four in total.

*Important note: It is likely that saved progress will be reset on final release. If there are no bugs associated with keeping the save files, there will not be any reset. Note that the non-linear nature of the final release will make losing progress almost non-consequential.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Since the Early Access version of the game comes with limited content, it will be cheaper for a limited time. Customers should expect the price to raise on, or before, release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will actively seek feedback from players on all platforms, ranging from Steam forums, e-mails, and social medias. With that information, as mentioned more thoroughly in "Why Early Access?", we will shape the final experience into a product that can be enjoyed by everyone.”

Patch Notes [v1.1] — Addressing issues with candles

Hello beautiful people from around the world!

Patch Notes
We've release Patch version 1.1, and it contains various changes, fixes, and balancing with the sanity system, and a small re-work of the candles mechanics.

To make sure you have the correct version, look for the version number upon launching the main menu screen, at the bottom right corner of the screen.

Let's start with the cool stuff:
  • We have added sockets throughout the house in key places where candles can be easily placed and managed.
  • "Sanity dangerously low" message now clearly explains that only pills will keep you sane at this point.
  • The brain fog HUD icon is now RED, and will help the player determine faster and easier that he should find ways to fix his sanity.
  • Candles tips are much clearer, and all gameplay mechanics associated to them are properly described.
  • Collected Matryoshka doll are now displayed on the second floor balcony.

And now the general Gameplay improvements and "ease of life" changes:
  • Crashes - Fixed all reported crashes associated with gameplay elements (notably after picking the safe key)
  • Bugs - It is no longer possible to lose key items (notably the safe key) due to auto saves.
  • HUD - You can now properly click on Accept, and Decline, instead of having to press "E" or "F"
  • HUD - Escape is now a valid navigation key.
  • Controls - Inverted Y has been added in the controls options menu
  • Video - Sharpen AA has been added in the video options menu
  • Gameplay - Car door key now properly display "Unavailable in Early Access"

We hope some of these fixes will help everyone get through unnecessary difficulties, and we will keep on reading your comments and feedback in order to improve your experience.

Save games
Unfortunately, if the game was updated from 1.002, your saved games will no longer be available. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

Known issues that will be fixed in V1.101 (estimated Oct. 10th)
  • We are currently looking into fixing all RESOLUTION problems.
  • We are looking for ways to make "Dynamic Inventory" interactions more fluid and intuitive.
  • Fixes for the cages room key being stuck in a drawer.
  • A lot of specific game bugs reported in the Bug report discussions.

Minor Patch Notes [v1.004] — Day One

Hello to all of you wonderful people!

We are overwhelmed by the absolutely positive reception of the game, so here's a thank you to everyone who supports us, and everyone who's tagging along on the journey!

With that said, here's the patch notes for version 1.004. It contains minor fixes that improves "general quality" of the HUD, and Dynamic Inventory system. Since it's our first official Public Patch, we wanted to keep things simple.

  • Tips for Candles is now much clearer. Candles remain the same, but it's much clearer as to what players should do with it:

"Candles are stationary lights that can be lit with a lighter.
Moving around with a candle will cause it to extinguish.
They last a long time, and act as light sources that help increase your character's sanity."

  • We have removed the multiple pills effect to a single and simpler one. Taking pills will now only quickly increase a small amount of sanity. This will prevent players with dangerously low sanity from losing sanity faster than the pills' effects.

  • Minor collision changes that were obstructing dynamic items.

  • Trying to store a "Dynamic Item" when your inventory is full now correctly tells you that your inventory is full.

  • We have added minor hints throughout the chapter to make the experience a little more "progressive".

  • Fixed a bug where it was possible to save the game while examining static objects, and could cause the item to be unavailable on load.

  • Various minor changes.

We are aware of the general consensus that the inventory is "wonky" at first. It was designed to be somewhat complex, to add a small layer of difficulty managing the Sanity. We have some ideas about introducing a game difficulty option.

Also, we acknowledge that some people get frustrated with candles and lighter. We hope the Tip clarification will help. At the moment, we've decided to make only minor changes to the inventory. We will keep on reading your comments and feedback, and we'll see about what changes need to be made.

About This Game

WARNING: This video game may potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. Player discretion is advised.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The game focuses on exploration and builds tension slowly to create a deeper and more meaningful experience. Its story is unveiled through surreal imaging and subtle environment details. Be mindful that it is a difficult game in unconventional ways.

Visage is a first-person psychological horror game.

Explore a mysterious ever-changing house in a slow-paced, atmospheric world that combines both uncannily comforting and horrifyingly realistic environments, and enjoy a genuinely terrifying experience.

The game is set inside a huge house in which terrible things have happened. You’ll wander through the gloomy corridors, explore every dead room, and get lost in endless mazes, your head filling with memories of the dead families that once lived in this very home. This twisted environment, void of any life other than yours, takes you to places you couldn't even bear imagining.

This house is stained with a terrible past. Families were brutally murdered by their own family members, people went insane, many committed suicide, and other grisly events occurred. Each and every room has its story painted on an invisible canvas. As a player, you will relive parts of this dark past, and each of its fragments will leave you restless and terrified. You’ll soon wish you could join the dead's ranks in their abyss, but death won't help you leave this place. Will you run from it, or will you try to uncover the truth behind the shadows?

Dark entities

The families that died in the house will haunt you and leave you restless. They’ll follow your every move, watch you from every corner, play tricks with your mind, and try to attack you. Why do they haunt you? What have you done? This you have to find out on your own.

In Visage, you are defenseless; no weapons could save you from the dreadful entities stalking you from the next corner, the next door, or underneath your feet. You’ll be able to pick up key elements, interact with the environment, and search for things that may help you escape this nightmare or pull you deeper into it.

Dying is part of the game. You need to avoid terror at all costs, as dark entities are attracted to it. Maintaining your mind as sane as possible will keep you from joining the ranks of the dead. Doing so will not be easy, and you'll have to figure out ways, like staying in the light, to avoid going insane.

Mature Content Description

This game contains realistic depictions of violence, which can be very disturbing. Also note that some of its themes revolve around alcohol and drug abuse. Some of its content may not be appropriate for all ages. Player discretion is advised.
