What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want to open more Heartbound content to the public to get feedback and fix bugs on the road to launch. Going Early Access allows an even greater conversation between us as developers and the Heartbound community.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are currently looking at a mid to late 2019 release window with multiple major content patches along the way. Each content patch will include an additional chapter and a continuation of the story.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Heartbound will have additional chapters of content, new storyline paths, more combat encounters, and multiple conclusions to the story. We have everything designed and mapped out and we're actively working on finishing it all.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently you are able to play through Hometown, Tower Corp, and you can explore a small portion of Animus, Muspelheim, or Niflheim. This version of the game has multiple storyline paths, tons of secrets, and multiple endings. If you're worried about the level of content, we have a Demo available that has all of Hometown and a small amount of the other worlds thrown in.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No, Heartbound will always be the same price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Throughout the development of Heartbound we have been completely open with our process and design work. We stream everything we work on from 12pm - 10pm PST daily and have a massive Discord community where anyone can talk to us at any time. Thor and Shaye work on Heartbound full-time so they are almost always available.”

About This Game

Heartbound is a non-traditional role-playing game about a boy, his dog, secrets, and sanity.

  • Follow Lore and Baron on their adventures through time and space.
  • Handle combat through a series of unique mini-games with varying objectives.
  • Change the story through exploration and interaction with the world.
  • A massive series of optional cryptographic puzzles that can be solved as a community.
  • Varying environments with unique pixel art, an inspired soundtrack, and tons of extra socks.
  • That awful feeling when you do something terrible to someone who loves you.
  • More gags than you can shake a stick at. Binder can lend you one of his if you don't bring your own.
  • Advanced sadness.

Heartbound does not use the traditional systems of Levels, Experience, or Consumables. Everything is skill-based and combat can change based on your relationships with others or things you have done. Weapons can be found throughout the world and they augment how much damage you deal in certain situations.

Every enemy you encounter has unique mini-games that you will not see anywhere else in the game. There are no random battles and a number of encounters are avoidable based on how you progress. Combat never ends in death and defeating someone allows you to see their memories from their perspective. What you do from there is up to you.
