The bar's back room, seven chairs, and a deck of cards. Aw Hell is the trick-taking game of calling your shot: bid exactly how many tricks you'll win, then take that many and not one more. Play friends online, the house bots offline, or ranked for a rating.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Aw Hell is a complete, playable card game today, online and offline, but the social side is still growing: Steam friend invites, matchmaking into ranked tables, seasons on the leaderboard, more characters and rooms, and the achievements. Those are better built with players at the table telling us what they want, and Early Access is the honest way to do that.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“About six to nine months. If the community features take longer to get right, it stays in Early Access until they are.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version adds Steam friend invites straight into a table, a ranked queue that seats you with players near your rating, leaderboard seasons, Steam achievements, more characters, clothes and rooms, and whatever house rules players ask for most. The core game, the rules, the bots and ranked play are already in.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Fully playable: two to seven players online, offline against the house bots, every house rule option, Steam sign-in with a skill rating, career stats and a leaderboard, a character creator, and a built-in tutorial. Tables are hosted on our game server. Known gaps: no friend invites from Steam yet (use the table link or code), no achievements, and no controller support.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may go up modestly at full release. Early Access buyers keep the game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through the Steam Community hub and discussions: bug reports, rule variants people want, and votes on what gets built next. Updates ship on a regular cadence with patch notes that say what changed and why.”

About This Game

Call your shot. Then make it.

Oh Hell has been played at kitchen tables for a hundred years, and the rule is simple: before each hand, say exactly how many tricks you'll take. Hit the number and you score ten plus your bid. Take one too many, or one too few, and... aw hell. Every hand changes size, from a fistful of cards down to a single one and back, so a bid of zero can be the bravest call at the table.

The back room at the Lone Star

Pull up a chair in a neon-lit bar back room, under the chandelier, with the fire going. The cards fly, the chips click, the regulars lean in when the bids come out. It's a card game, and it looks like one worth staying late for.

Play it how your family plays it

Every table picks its house rules: biggest hand, down-and-back-up or down only, secret bids or around the table with the dealer hook, who leads, whether trump has to be broken, and what a miss costs you. Set them once and the lobby shows them to everyone before the deal.

Friends, strangers, or the house bots

Open a table and send the link, list it publicly for anyone to join, or sit down alone against Wade, June, Hank and the rest of the regulars, who bid and play like people who've lost before. Two to seven seats. Nobody has to wait on a slow player: leave mid-game and a bot finishes your hand.

Ranked, if you want it

Sign in and any table can be ranked. Results move a skill rating, your career stats pile up, and the leaderboard remembers who bid zero and meant it.

Make yourself at home

Build your character in the back room: hair, beard, hat, glasses, clothes, the lot. Your look follows your account to every device.

Learn it in five minutes

A built-in How to play deals a scripted game and talks you through trump, following suit, the bid, and the one card that wins a trick you didn't want. Then it walks every house rule and setting.

Need a fourth?

The Aw Hell Discord is where players find a table, report bugs and read the patch notes. The invite is in the game's main menu and on the website linked from this page.
