What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“No Good Pirates is a big sandbox: a living world with nine factions, a real economy, naval combat, boarding, colonies and online co-op for up to 8 players. The core of all of that is already in place and playable. A world like this gets better the more people sail in it, though. Every captain finds a different exploit, a different weird war, a different way to sink. Early Access lets me build the rest of the game together with the players, tune the balance on real playthroughs, and fix the problems that only show up when lots of people play in lots of different ways.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 12 to 18 months. The exact length depends on player feedback and on what the community wants most. I would rather take a little longer and get it right than rush version 1.0.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The plan is to expand and deepen what is already there: more ships and ship fittings, more island types and buildings, more sea monsters, more quests and events, deeper faction politics and wars, more to do in the Frontier, and a long-term goal for your House. Alongside that: balance and performance work, full controller support, Steam achievements and cloud saves, and a lot of polish based on what players ask for. The exact list and order will be shaped by feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable from start to finish of a sandbox run. You can sail, trade between ports, fit and upgrade your ships, hire a crew, fight with cannons, board and capture ships, take quests, explore and chart the Frontier, fight sea monsters and the Drowned, build a fleet, found colonies, rule your own House, and play all of it alone or in online co-op with up to 8 players. The game has 9 languages. Expect rough edges: some balance issues, bugs, placeholder art and UI in places, and occasional save changes between big updates.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. The price will go up when the game leaves Early Access, so joining early is the cheapest way to get it, and you get every update along the way for free.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The main place is the official No Good Pirates Discord server. That is where I talk with players, collect bug reports and ideas, share work in progress, and run polls on what to build next. I also follow the Steam discussions and post regular update notes on Steam. Player suggestions directly decide what gets built and in what order. Players can also correct the translations themselves straight from the game's settings and send the fixes in.”

About This Game

Ahoy, ye scurvy future legend!

You start with a dinghy, two cannons and one sailor who is already asking about payday. Somewhere out there are fat merchant ships, rich ports, angry navies and things with too many teeth. What happens next is up to you.

No Good Pirates is a sandbox about sailing, trading and naval combat in a world that does not wait for you. Factions fight over islands, merchants haul real cargo between ports, pirates raid whoever looks weak, and prices rise and fall with what actually happens at sea. You are just one more captain in it. For now.

From rowboat to "oh no, it's HIM"

  • Buy low, sell high, and learn which port is starving for grain and which one is drowning in it.

  • Bolt on more cannons, more sails, harpoons, engines and other fittings. Then buy a bigger hull and do it all again.

  • Hire a crew with names, skills, wages and opinions. Keep them fed and paid, or find out how mutiny-adjacent they can get.

Naval combat with actual physics

Every cannonball flies for real. Every hit punches a real hole. Holes below the waterline let the sea in, and your crew runs to plug them and pump while you line up the next broadside.

  • Turn your side to the enemy, fire a broadside, and brace before theirs lands.

  • Lash alongside and board her. Win the fight on deck, then tow your prize home or scuttle it.

  • Chase guns, powder kegs, harpoons, shields and engines for when "fair fight" is not on the menu.

A world that keeps sailing without you

A new procedural archipelago every game, from volcanoes and deserts to snowy peaks, swamps, atolls and caves you can sail right through. Nine unique factions fight over it - kingdoms, island nations, pirates, smugglers and things that should have stayed drowned - and almost none of them like each other.

Every faction needs goods from someone else, so they trade, form coalitions, declare wars and besiege each other's islands, with or without you. Leaders give orders, ports grow and shrink, and quests come from what islands actually need. Add day and night, rain, fog and storms, and the sea never plays the same way twice.

Beyond the map: the Frontier

Past the settled seas lie uncharted wild islands with rare resources and nobody's flag. Chart them, claim them, and found your own colonies. Just watch out for the Drowned - pale crews with green lanterns and torn sails, who haunt the Frontier from their sunken bases and come raiding at night. Take their haunts, or sail fast.

Here be monsters

The deep sea is home to giant worms, crabs and worse. They are big, they are hungry, and they think your ship looks like a snack. Bring cannons. Bring more cannons.

Raise your own flag

Once you have the gold and the guns, stop working for others. Take a fleet, chart wild islands, found colonies and rule them as your own House. Set taxes, build defences, make allies, declare wars, or swear service to a greater lord and wait for your moment.

Bring your crew (the human kind)

Play solo or host online co-op for up to 8 players through Steam. Every friend is a full captain with their own ship, crew, gold and House. Sail together, trade together, or settle that "who sank whose cargo" argument with a broadside.

Early Access

No Good Pirates is in Early Access and is being built by a solo developer. More ships, islands, monsters and features are on the way, and player feedback decides what comes first. Hop in, set sail, and tell us what to build next. Arrr.
