About This Game

Hundreds of people in the square wear your colour and your hat. Somewhere among them are the other players, and every one of them wants the same gems you do.

Grand Theft Spy is social stealth for up to 8 players. Walk like the crowd walks and nobody can tell you apart. Sprint, jump or draw a gun and you've just told everyone which one is you.

Hide in plain sight

  • Up to 900 townsfolk share the players' colours and hats, so everyone has dozens of doubles.
  • Blend in like a local: fall in with a group and walk with them, take a seat on a bench, browse a stall, join the dancers. You chat, gesture and stretch exactly the way they do.
  • Every tell counts. Sprinting, jumping, aiming or grabbing a gem in the open can give you away, to players and AI alike.
  • A gunshot sends the crowd running, then turning to look. Shoot a civilian and the guards come for you.
  • Every shot is heard from where it was fired, late and faint from across the map, with a marker showing roughly which way.

Steal the gems

  • Each round the market wants a set of six gems. Search the gem rooms, from hedge mazes to grand museums, and get the set to the market counter first.
  • Knock out a rival and they drop a gem for anyone to grab. Everyone's haul is on show at the market, so you always know who's close to winning.
  • Spend spare gems at the workbench in your hideout on eight abilities: Disguise, Decoy, Morph, Money Bomb, Tripwire Bomb, Bodyguard, Teleport and Glimmer. Prices change every round.
  • Run the trap courses for a secret item: jump the lasers, cross bridges that fall away, time the knights' axes, hop the crumbling pillars. Win a sniper rifle, a vest, a master key to every hideout and the vents, or a dagger for cinematic executions.
  • Put a bounty on the leader. A compass leads you to them. Picking them out of their lookalikes is up to you.

13 ways to play

From the full heist to quick party rounds. The host picks the game, the map and how many rounds.

The heist
  • Gems: the classic round. Find the gems, steal them off rivals and trade them in first, with pistols, abilities, trap courses and bounties.

Contracts: no guns. Close in and take them down, and score more for doing it well: unseen, at a walk, from inside the crowd. Kill streaks multiply it. Bring a loadout of two abilities, chosen from thirteen.
  • Cat and Mouse: you have a target, and someone has you. Follow the compass, pick them out, strike first.
  • Deathmatch: no compass and no lookalikes, in one tight corner of the map.
  • Hide and Seek: one team hunts, one hides. Swap at half time.
  • Smash and Grab: capture the flag. A hunter in your half, prey in theirs.
  • Hit List: co-op. Everyone together against the clock, taking down targets marked in the crowd.
  • Domination: two teams, three zones. Hold them to score.

Party games: quick rounds where blending in is everything.
  • Grand Tour: everyone looks the same. Touch all five statues or be the last one standing, and know that everyone hears every touch.
  • Promenade: cross the hall at the crowd's pace. One bullet each, for whoever you think is a player.
  • Sticky Fingers: 2v2. Snipers with laser sights on the gallery, thieves in plain white stealing gems below. Then swap.
  • Royal Escort: knights guard the royals as they stroll the garden, ninjas strike them down. Half the crowd is dressed as each side.
  • Lights Out: 2v2, in the dark. Snipers with flashlights hunt the assassins thinning out the crowd. Then swap.
  • Last Dance: the ring closes in. Last one up wins.

Six maps

  • The Town (up to 8): a walled town around a market square, with four gem rooms, eight hideouts and four trap courses.
  • The Mansion (up to 4): two storeys round a fountain court, with a ballroom, a library, an armoury and a hedge-maze garden. Up in the galleries, you stand out.
  • The Masquerade (up to 8): a candlelit ballroom with a sniper's gallery and five statues.
  • The Empty Hall (up to 4): the ballroom cleared bare. Nowhere to hide but the crowd.
  • The Long Gallery (up to 8): a 120-metre museum hall to cross with the crowd.
  • The Palace Garden (up to 8): a fountain garden at golden hour, where the royals take their walk.

Play with friends, or against the AI

  • Up to 8 players, online or on your local network. Host a lobby and send your friends the five-letter code. It works either way.
  • Public lobbies are listed for anyone to join. Friends-only lobbies need the code.
  • Chat and ready up in the lobby while the host picks the game, the map, the crowd, the AI players and the match length: 1, 3, 5 or 10 rounds, or endless.
  • Add up to 7 AI players on easy, medium or hard. They play every mode, watch the crowd for tells, fight for a reason, loot after a fight and play to win.
  • Nobody around? Play solo against the AI.

Dress for the masquerade

  • Pick one of eight colours and 22 hats and masks: top hat, crown, fedora, wizard hat, antlers, goggles, moustaches, and fox, panda, tiger, tiki and Noh masks, among others.
  • The crowd wears them too. Whatever you choose, dozens of strangers are wearing it.
  • Ten dances, from the waltz and the can-can to the robot and the floss. Dance with the dancers and you're one of them. Dance anywhere else and you're not.
  • Disguise borrows another player's look. Morph lends yours to everyone around you.

Pick a look. Find your gems. Try not to run.
