Coming Soon To Early Access

The developers of this game intend to release as a work in progress, developing with the feedback of players.

Note: Games in Early Access are not complete and may or may not change further. If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development. Learn more

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want feedback on co-op teamwork, the pressure of the quota, monster encounters and replayability. Early Access lets us improve these systems with different groups before deciding what belongs in the finished game.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently estimate approximately 6–12 months in Early Access. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed completion date; development and player feedback may change the schedule.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to improve stability, performance, balance, controller support, accessibility and translations, and expand worthwhile floor and encounter ideas. Plans may change as we learn from players.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current development build supports solo play and online co-op for up to four players, collecting and throwing loot, quotas, timed elevator stops, tools and upgrades, proximity voice chat and optional traitor play for groups of three or more. It includes varied floors, special rooms, minigames, new character models, music, sound effects and German/English voice announcements. Rare floors such as Floor 13 and the hall of mirrors are already included.

Bugs, performance and balance issues remain possible. Controller options and menu access have been expanded; testing on more physical devices and translation review are ongoing. Six Steam achievements and progress-only Steam Cloud have been integrated for the main game and are undergoing live validation. These Steam features are not enabled for the separate Playtest app. All players in a group need the same version. Playtest access requires an available testing period and is separate from the future Early Access release.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do not currently plan to increase the price during Early Access. The full-release price may increase if substantial content is added; we will announce any change in advance. Early Access purchases include subsequent updates and the full version at no additional cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Players can report bugs and suggest improvements through the Steam discussions and our Discord, SHAFT HAPPENS – Staff Room. Repeated issues and feedback inform priorities. We will share significant changes in Steam patch notes. Playtest availability will be communicated separately.”

About This Game

Your shift goes down. Your quota goes up.

Welcome to Tiefbau AG. Work alone or with up to three colleagues. Scavenge valuables, throw them into the elevator and get back before the doors close. Meet the company's quota and descend into increasingly hostile workplaces.

Invest in survival. Trust cautiously.

Between shifts, visit the maintenance floor to buy tools and upgrades. Coordinate through proximity voice chat, share the load and decide what the team needs. Optional traitor play adds suspicion to groups of three or more.

Something else works here.

Explore changing floor layouts, special rooms and minigames. Encounter hostile machinery and monsters, including creatures inspired by hand-drawn designs waiting in the shadows. Learn their behaviour and watch your time. ELFI delivers dry announcements in German or English. Sympathy is not included.

Clock in again.

Solo and online co-op, Steam friend invitations, individual voice muting, difficulty settings and accessibility options are included. Text and subtitles support seven languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Simplified Chinese. Translations outside German and English are machine-assisted and still being reviewed. Spoken audio is German or English.

The game is in development. Request Playtest access on this page; participation depends on the test being available. Wishlist the game for release updates.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Some content in SHAFT HAPPENS was created with the help of AI tools during development and then selected, edited and integrated by the developer: 3D models (partly generated from concept images), title and concept images, some textures, sound effects, background music and ambient sounds, parts of the in-game text, and the translations into French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian and Simplified Chinese (machine-translated, being reviewed step by step). The game does not generate any content with AI while you play. Gameplay, level generation and game logic are hand-designed; AI tools were also used as coding assistance.
