About This Game

Wake up in a bedroom. Walk through a door. The night begins.

After the Tone is a first-person dream explorer. Every dream is built the moment you enter it: the music, land, weather, buildings, and "people". No two are alike, and most of the things you see you will never see again.

Every dream is built when you enter it

Most places you will venture are not premade. Each dream is assembled from scratch, and gone when you leave. There might be ways to revisit them, but you will have to find out how.

  • the land - dozens of unique types of landforms, from flat topped mesas to craggy peaks

  • the places - towns, ruins, buildings laid out for you to explore

  • the weather and sky

  • the music - a unique score generated and modified by each dream and how you interact with it

  • the things that live there - the "inhabitants"

Walk, look, touch

Walk, look around, touch things. Do it in the right place and you might end up somewhere else entirely.

  • touch things - it defines where you go and how you get there

  • some places you encounter may have more than meets the eye

  • things that lead you somewhere else, and somewhere elses that aren't normal dreams at all

  • some things are hidden; some only show up if you're paying attention

Puzzles without instructions

Some places are locked, and some are machines. Nothing tells you which, or how they work. You work it out by looking and touching.

  • mechanisms built into places, with parts spread across rooms and floors

  • locks with their own logic to learn

  • puzzles generated with each dream, so no two are solved the same way

  • no hints, no markers, no checklist

Not everything is forgotten

There is no map, no HUD, no tutorial. A night ends when it decides to, and you wake up back in the room. But pay attention, because not everything will be forgotten when you wake.

  • some things you find may come back with you

  • the bedroom keeps track of what you know

  • learn a story told across many nights, with multiple "endings"

Features

  • several dozen themes, each with its own palette, weather, and sound

  • authored locations that aren't dreams at all

  • cutscenes between dreams, spanning multiple narrative arcs

  • dreams are random, but can be found again..

  • authored music tapes that can be found and played, in addition to the procedural score

  • shapes, textures, sounds, and songs generated as you play

  • controller support

  • Steam Achievements

Contains imagery and themes that may be unsettling to some players - no combat, blood, or gore.

When you get the message, hang up the phone.
