A small illustrated writer sits in the corner of your screen and works on a book of their own, but only while you type. Their published books pay out ink you can spend on new writers. Writelings counts your keystrokes and never records which keys.

About This Game

A writer on your desktop

Writelings is a desktop companion for Windows. A small illustrated writer sits at a desk in a corner of your screen, on top of whatever you're writing in: Word, Google Docs, an email, code, anything.

They're working on a book of their own, and they only write while you type. Stop, and they look up and think for a while before they doze off. Start typing again and so do they. They can't write their masterpiece without you.

Books and ink

Books come in sizes, from a 500-word short story to tomes that run into the millions of words. When your writer finishes one, it goes on their shelf and pays royalties in ink. The whole backlist keeps paying, including for several hours after you close the app.

Writers

You start with the Night Owl, who writes at a lamp-lit desk under the stars. Ink buys new writers, and the cast keeps growing. Each one comes with a whole lit scene of their own:

  • A frog wizard on a lily pad under a paper lantern

  • A raftsman on the Mississippi before dawn

  • A Victorian postmaster mouse working by a thimble of candlelight

  • A tortoise writing in a glasshouse in flat daylight

  • A small cloud in a beret, writing the weather into an almanac

  • A pink slime in a dungeon, writing up the adventurers he ate. He's lit from the inside by the wizard's crystal he swallowed. His desk is a shield on a sword and his pen is an arrow.

Some of them quote their favorite authors while they work. Two stay locked until you've written 80,000 words of your own.

Staying out of the way

Clicks pass through the writer to whatever is underneath. Drag them anywhere and resize them. The panel above them holds their current book, your stats, the shelf, and the shop. It comes in different interface skins, dark and light, so you can pick whichever works best on your screen. Hide it and it's just the writer at their desk.

How it knows you're typing

Windows tells Writelings each time a key goes down, and Writelings adds one to a count. That count is the only input.

  • It never records which key was pressed, so your words are never read or stored.

  • It doesn't look at which program or window you're in, or what your documents are called.

  • Nothing about your typing leaves your computer. There are no analytics and no telemetry.

There are no accounts and no launcher, and nothing runs online. Your progress is one save file on your own computer. Writelings is built with Electron, so its code ships readable in the install folder if you want to check.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Writelings was made with the help of AI tools. The character art and the store page art are created with AI image generation and then hand-edited, corrected and composited by the developer before they ship. The music in the trailer was generated with an AI music model. The in-game text, including the characters' prose and book titles, was drafted with AI assistance and reviewed and edited by the developer. Every frame and every line in the game is fixed content reviewed by a person. Writelings does not generate anything while you play and has no AI features at runtime. Quotations shown in the game are credited to their authors.
