What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“ We’re a small team of dedicated developers. Our official public alpha launch was in November of 2019. Since then, we have created a solid foundation for Survive the Nights. Our development process involves slowly adding features but never before fixing current issues. We’ve crushed a lot of the major issues that came along with initial development along with the help and feedback from our community. We’ve tried our best to stay on track and improve the project with every update.

Our progress has been consistent and we can promise it will remain so. Please feel free to check our backlog of Steam updates, devblogs and
changelog entries.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We’ve now implemented the majority of our core mechanics and squashed a lot of major bugs since leaving pre-alpha and now into alpha. We’ve reached a stage where we feel far more confident in our skills and the project’s gameplay and direction. We plan to expand on gameplay ideas and mechanics with feedback from the community.

We also plan to expand our small team in the future which will enable us to develop at a quicker pace. Once our Early Access supporters and the development team feel the project is ready to move to the next stage, we’ll take that leap.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Survive the Nights is a very ambitious project. We have amazing ideas for the future. We’re attempting to create a realistic interactive world - a vision of both the development team and the community’s zombie apocalypse brought to life.

Now that our basic mechanics are in place, we’ll rely more community involvement to come up with ideas for future builds. We plan to improve all of the currently implemented features and we’ll make sure they are working before adding more.

Some of our future goals

  • Expand electrical systems to include full power to the island - The island currently features a massive power station and it has been designed with functionality in mind. The power stations will supply power to substations which can power entire towns.

  • Expand the tool system - We’d like to incorporate power tools and additional tools into the game to make fortification a quicker process.

  • Expand on crafting - With the community's help, we’ll expand on all of the crafting categories such as designing and implementing anything that suits the gameplay and is backed by the community.

  • Expand fortification and add vehicle fortification - Additional trap and fortification types like sheet metal, plywood, bars and fencing. Fortifications added to vehicles.

  • Additional vehicles - One of our goals is to expand on “mobile survival” such as adding box trucks and eventually trailer trucks which could make for an excellent mobile survival experience.

  • Vehicle storage and towable generators - Take your loot with you, store goods in on board containers or in trunks. Towable generators and lighting rigs for setting up camp in the wild.

  • Basic leveling system - Do a certain task, gain XP. The more XP, the better you are at doing said task. This will be a simple old school leveling system.

  • Additional weapons - Weapons will stay civilian based while not adding anything too over the top when it comes to military weaponry. We’d love to hear your ideas for craftable weapons.

  • Expand hunting - Larger game, more small game trapping options.

  • Fishing - Spend your days shore side with a line in the water, if you think it’s safe.

  • Expand on design - Added towns, additional town designs and reworks. Sewer systems, a bridge or ferry to Black Island Prison.

  • Character customization - A full scale character customization feature including the implementation of a female character.

  • Structure manager - Clean structures, paint, repair, add holiday features, remove furniture, display structure stats.

  • Grouping system - Players can join a grouping system with friends.

  • Island wide community missions and events - Come together to clear out larger structures. Band together and share your loot to repair the power station and provide the entire island with power.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Many of our concept features have been implemented into the game. We consider these early access builds to be our "base” - something to perfect and improve as we move forward. We feel that the game is both enjoyable and challenging in its current state.

Some of the current in game features -

  • Server hosting & solo play - Players can host their own servers and create private parties
  • Wave based horde system - A server based option allowing for zombie hordes and wave based gameplay
  • Free placed fortifications - Barricade type fortifications can be free placed to hold back and damage zombies and other players.
  • Aggressive and Passive AI.
  • Vehicles - Part systems and fuel consumption.
  • Electrical systems - Powering structures and camps.
  • Structure fortification - Cover windows, set traps and lock doors.
  • Container fortification - Select and secure fixed containers with locks.
  • Starting camps - Provide new players some starting loot and security.
  • Player guide - An easy to follow to do style starting guide.
  • Player achievements - Who doesn't like achievements?
  • Global stats, public server leader boards - Who can survive the longest?
  • Cooking - Cook over camp grills in the wild or wood stoves in homes.
  • Hunting - Deer, chickens and small game trapping!
  • Harvesting - Berries from summer bushes, wood and tinder from dead bushes.
  • Farming - Grow crops in indoor grow pots and outside fields. Players can harvest their own food and grow medicinal plants to improve health.
  • Tree felling - Chop down all the trees! Wood is a valuable commodity.
  • Full season and weather system - All four seasons and random weather.
  • Crafting systems - Easily searched text based crafting system.
  • Physically spawning loot - Visual loot spawns around the world.
  • Container loot - Select containers spawn fitting items, IE food in the kitchen.
  • Dynamic placement/storage - Place items physically in the world and they'll stay put!
  • Health system - Stay safe, bandage wounds and use meds to heal.
  • Nutritional system - Keep fed and watered.
  • Mental health - Kill too often and suffer the ultimate consequence.
  • Swimming - Players have the ability to swim and dive under water.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We don't expect the price to drop but there’s a possibility that the price may increase as we near a more polished game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are a crowd-funded project and have always relied on the community for input. We will continue to do so in the future. We’re very active and reachable nearly around the clock on our official Discord server. We post weekly devblogs to keep the community informed on exactly what we're working on. Community involvement not only makes our jobs easier but guarantees us the ability to say that we're making the game we ALL want to play!”

About This Game

A hardcore, open-world survival sandbox set in a post-apocalyptic world where players must scavenge, craft, fortify and fight to survive against hordes of infected and other players. Scenarios let you choose your zombie apocalypse story and difficulty.

Zombies

Zombies are slower and more docile during the day. When the sun sets they become alert, aggressive and are out on the hunt.

Vehicle Fortifications

Vehicles are fully fortifiable. Cover windows and add strength to gain the advantage. Attach a plow or lights to make your vehicle the ultimate survival machine.

Structure Fortifications

Every structure is fortifiable! Plank windows, doors and place free placed barricades to secure any structure.

Mobile Homes

Don’t want to live in a structure? No problem. Find an RV or similar vehicle and take your base with you. Cook, sleep and store your items in your mobile base.

Placement & Storage

Settle into your new home by using pegboards, player storage and blueprints to put your stamp on the place. Physically place your items in the world to make your perfect survival hideout.

Zombie Hordes

Hordes increase in difficulty over time. Challenging even the best players to progressively make their base stronger and better protected. The harder the horde, the bigger reward.

Nutrition & Hydration

Cook over an open fire or directly on a stove to manage your calorie and hydration needs. Maintaining your player vitals will increase your overall strength and carrying capacity over time.

Mental Health System

The mental health system discourages the "Kill On Sight" mentality, promoting alliances for better survival against the zombie threat. While PVP is still a factor, players have ways to correct a negative mental state.

Hunting

Sick of baked beans? Head out into the wilderness to hunt for larger animals.

Crafting & Inventory

Simplified text-based inventory and crafting allows us to greatly expand on in-game items and crafting possibilities.

Blueprints

Blueprints let you visualize your free-placed fortifications before you build them. Layout your base and build it as you gather materials.

Weapon Customization

Weapon attachments let you customize your gun and get it just right for your play style.

Traps

Use traps to get the upper hand. Traps can give you the edge when zombies or raiders arrive.

Vehicle Maintenance

Every vehicle is repairable. Engine and wheel parts are required to get a vehicle running. Items can be stored in trunks and on truck beds.

Electrical System

Powering a structure can provide light to make nighttime activities easier. Some structures also require electricity to power interior and exterior doors.

Farming

When food stores start to run out, turn to farming for your calorie needs. Protect your crops indoors under light or grow them outside in the warmer months to produce food that will last through winter.

Zombie Numbers

Optimizations allow the game to handle massive amounts of zombies. They might be slow but numbers can really get the better of you.

Server Hosting & Solo Play

Simple game hosting that uses steam relays. There’s no need to port forward. Simply choose your settings and start playing.

Scenarios

Browse through official and community-made scenarios to find your perfect zombie experience.

Customizable Experience

Can’t find your perfect scenario? With over 100 configuration options, you can set things up just how you like them. Once you’re done, you can upload your world save to the Steam workshop for others to enjoy.

POIs

Explore the different points of interest to find valuable location-specific loot.

Weather & Seasons

The weather is dynamic including all four seasons along with seasonal vegetation and foliage.

Day & Night Objectives

Spend your days preparing to survive the onslaught at night. Zombies are more aggressive and alert when the sun goes down.

Day Objectives: During the day, focus on resource gathering and fortification. Fell trees, craft planks, engage in hunting and trapping. Collect loot, food, and fortify a structure. Ensure doors and containers are locked, fuel generators, and prepare power systems. Keep your health up by lighting fires, crafting bandages, and gearing up for the night.

Night Objectives: At night, prioritize safety and stealth. Team up with friends in a secured structure, favor melee over firearms to stay quiet. Activate generators, power up structures, set traps, and cook meals indoors on wood stoves. The key is to survive until morning.

Steam Achievements

If achievements are your thing, we’ve got you covered. With almost 100 achievements, you’ll be busy for some time. Can you ‘Choke a Chicken’?
