What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Cinderwake is playable from the first town to the last boss of Act III, and I want players in the game before I build the endgame on top of it. The balance of five classes and three world levels needs many more hands than mine. Early Access gives me the feedback that decides what the endgame looks like.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“About 9 to 12 months. The full release comes when Act IV and the endgame are in and the balance is stable.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version adds Act IV, an endgame after Firestorm, more unique items and item sets, more monster types, and a wider skill tree for each class. Controller support and Steam Deck support are planned for the full version.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Three complete acts with 9 bosses and a secret level, five classes with more than 25 skills each, three world levels, random maps, loot with affixes, sockets, gems, runes, sets and charms, hired helpers, a pet fox, online co-op for up to 8 players with parties, voice chat, cloud saves, achievements and leaderboards. Saves from Early Access carry over to the full version.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price goes up a little at the full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“A public plan on the store page, a beta branch for every update before it goes live, and a Steam discussion board where I read everything. Updates come every four to six weeks with a news post for each one.”

About This Game

Cinderwake is an action RPG in the old style: click to move, click to kill, pick up what the dead leave behind.

The fire that warmed the kingdom now burns it. The Cinder Matron calls her ashlings in the cathedral, a buried king wakes under the glass dunes, and the drowned abbey rings its bell at night. Five heroes go where the ash falls thickest.

Five classes

  • Arcanist: fire, frost and storm that answer each other. Mix the elements and they resonate: Frozen Maw, Flame Wave, Eye of the Storm.
  • Ravager: a hooded headsman who fights on rage, not mana. Chain crushing blows, drag foes in with hooks and shackles, take the heads of the weak. A great axe, or a weapon in each hand.
  • Huntress: marks her prey, coats her arrows in ember, rime or venom oil, sets traps, and hunts with a hound that grows with her.
  • Gravecaller: hexes that spread from foe to foe, risen bones and a Grave Lord, bound spirits, and offerings that turn the dead into power.
  • Oathsworn: one sworn oath that charges a crushing Judgment, hymns that help the whole party, and wheeling hammers of dawn.
Each class has three skill trees with more than 25 skills, and skills gain new effects at their milestones. A healer in each town gives the points back for gold, so a bad build is never the end of a hero.

Loot

Common, magic, rare, set and unique items with random affixes, sockets, gems and runes. The right runes in the right order inscribe an item. Rare uniques change the rules of a class. Charms work from your bag. Reforge and add sockets at the smith, share a stash between your heroes, and filter the loot you see. Item requirements matter: a heavy weapon in weak hands is dead weight. Buy, sell, gamble, hire a helper and gear up the helper too.

The Soot Fox

Every hero has a fox. It picks up loot, carries it, and runs to town to sell what you do not need. Feed it and it grows.

Three acts, random every time

Hollowmere and the ashen heaths. Dustreach and the tombs under the dunes. Greywater and the drowned abbey. Every map is generated new for every game. Waypoints, town portals and three world levels: Smolder, Blaze and Firestorm. Bosses warn before they strike: read the ground, step aside, hit back.

Secrets

Walls that break, hidden rooms and glades, treasure thieves that run with their gold, gleaming monsters, side quests, lore stones, and a secret level for those who find the bell.

Play together

Up to 8 players in one game over Steam. Each player goes where they want. Form a party to share experience, quest credit, auras and heals. Voice chat is built in. Steam achievements, leaderboards and cloud saves.
