The Beast gets hungry. The Beast devours your cats. The Beast sees you. The Beast comes for you. You have no weapons. You have rules to learn and turn against them. Know each nightmare, outsmart the Beast and its Sentinels, and carry your darlings to safety. Every cat you save counts.

About This Game

Every nightmare has a way out

BATEYD is a puzzle you're standing inside. Everything in these nightmares — the Beast, its Sentinels, the cats, the hunger — runs on rules you can learn. Nothing is random. Nothing cheats. You'll be terrified anyway, mostly in broad daylight.

The way out is at the top of the tallest building, and the elevator only runs with a cat nearby. So: find the keys, get the catnip, and bring as many darlings up with you as you can.

Everything follows rules

Sentinels run when they see you and fire fireworks. Fireworks always bring the Beast.

Walk up behind a Sentinel and pet it, and it melts into a beer puddle. The Beast stumbles in and starts drowning until the others come dry it out.

A hungry Beast will eat a steak before it hunts a cat.

Cats follow catnip. All of them.

Danny trades vine seeds, tonics, invisibility, steaks and mushrooms for the bracelets lying around. Plant a seed and a vine grows on the spot. Eat a mushroom and you rise into the sky, invisible, free to drift over the whole nightmare.

Nightmares don't change between attempts. That's the point — you can plan.

Five nightmares, built to be replayed

Parking Lot. Cemetery. School. Rave. The Park. Each one scores you on cats saved, bracelets collected, Sentinels spared, and speed, with per-level leaderboards and a ceiling built for players who don't stop at "escaped."

Playing well unlocks twenty memories. The story is there if you want it — it gates nothing. Skip every word and the game plays the same. Read all of it and the nightmares stop being abstract.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

BATEYD’s story deals with difficult subjects honestly rather than graphically. It involves drug use and drug dealing — including an adult who sells to teenagers — bullying, psychological abuse, homophobia, the death of an animal, the death of a young person, and physical violence that is implied rather than shown. There is no gore. Deaths in the nightmares are stylized, and you choose at the start how yours are depicted. If you stream or record yourself playing, this list is for you as much as for anyone.
