Monday, 9:37 in the morning, and your jaw is still swelling. Out on the yard, Kowalski stood ten metres away, looked right at you, then looked at his watch. Later that day a guard opens cell 168, shoves a freckled blond in prison stripes through the door and says two words that aren't meant for you: "As agreed."

His name is Sky. Your plan was to keep your head down, stay out of other people's business and get through your sentence in one piece. It lasts a week. Brody wants Sky moved to B-block, his tier, first thing Monday morning. Kowalski can stop the transfer once, for sixty cigarettes, and laundry pays five a shift. Kowalski's one condition: don't tell Sky.

The demo covers the prologue and your first week, Monday to Monday: the first night, the yard bench, the shower deal, the notebook and, if you've earned it, the night Sky tells you about his dog, Toast. No kiss yet, that's for the full game. It ends on Monday, when two pairs of boots stop outside your door.

Who's inside

Sky has the bottom bunk. On the first night he asks you to turn toward the wall. He answers in single words, draws in a notebook he keeps to himself, and one evening asks if there's any way to use the showers alone. Earn it, and he turns the notebook around.

Kowalski is the guard who looked at his watch. There's no menu: bring him a problem and he names a price. Ten cigarettes gets Sky the first shower slot for a week, nobody else in there. Short on cigarettes? He'll take a favour instead, a note slid under a cell door that night. Don't read it.

Brody never hurries. He finds you on the yard and tells you not to get used to your cellmate. In the cafeteria he takes the long way past your table and looks at Sky for as long as it takes to walk fifteen feet.

Quinn Harlow is the red-haired guard on nights, the count and the shower-block door. He doesn't take cigarettes, because everybody in here has cigarettes. He takes news.
