Cast fire, ice, lightning, wind and water in a physics sandbox where everything reacts for real. Drain the pond, freeze it and walk across, or open the floodgate, flood the market square and shock everyone standing in the water.

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The sandbox is already playable, and a lot of the game is not built yet. Early Access is how we finish it with the people who actually play it: the level editor first, then Destruction mode, puzzles, bosses and more spells.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect Spellspill to stay in Early Access for roughly 12 to 18 months. We will post updates as things land, and we will move the date if the editor or the new modes take longer than that.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version adds the level editor, so you can build and share your own physics sandboxes and puzzles. It also adds Destruction mode, where breaking more earns more money, physics puzzles, enemy waves with boss fights, and more spells. The sandbox you can play now stays.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Playable today: fourteen spells plus a bullet-time ability (Eye of the Storm), two maps (a stone arena and a market village), simulated water and fire, buildings that break into parts, and ragdoll enemies. A combat test mode sends waves of melee enemies. There is no level editor, no Destruction mode, no scoring and no bosses yet.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to raise the price moderately once the game leaves Early Access and the full feature set is in, so early supporters get the best deal.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We read the Steam forums and reviews, and the editor and the new modes will follow what players actually ask for. We will post dev updates as features land and put new spells and modes up for testing before they are final.”

About This Game

A physics sandbox you break with spells

Spellspill is a magic destruction sandbox. You cast fire, ice, lightning, wind and water, and the world answers with real physics. Water has volume. Fire spreads from part to part. A building is a stack of boards, beams and tiles, and it falls when the parts holding it up are gone.

  • Set a cottage on fire with Ember Lance. The fire walks from board to board, burnt parts snap, and the roof comes down.
  • Pull the plug in the arena pond with Arcane Grasp. A whirlpool forms and the pond empties. Flip the sluice gate and the mill race floods, and the waterwheel starts turning.
  • Open the village floodgate. The stream swells, spills over the ford, and the market square ends up under water. Crates and fruit float off.
  • Strike that flood with Chain Lightning. The charge runs through every connected puddle and jolts every husk standing in it, however far away.
  • Cast Blizzard on the pond. The surface freezes and you walk across it. Fire melts holes in the ice. A Meteor smashes it into floes.
  • Grab a crate, a loose arm, or a single piece of fruit with Arcane Grasp and throw it.

Two maps, same rules

The arena is a stone yard with a pond, a waterfall, a mill race and a timber house. The village is a market on a stream: cottages, stalls, a watermill, a fountain, a lake.

  • The village floodgate is a hand wheel on the knoll. Grasp it and the panel lifts. Shut it again and the flood drains off over a couple of minutes.
  • The fountain stops when you drain its basin with Tidecall or Tempest, turns to ice under Blizzard, and carries lightning through its water.
  • Hold Tempest over the pond and the water climbs the funnel. Let go and it falls back as rain, runs across the paving and sits in the worn hollows as puddles.
  • Hold Tidecall and ribbons of water lift out of the nearest pond. The level really drops. The water comes back down as jets, aimed at husks and grass fires first.

Spells that argue with each other

  • Chain Lightning jumps from street lamp to street lamp, runs the length of a Tidal Surge, and rides Tidecall's ribbons. Hit a wet shirt on a washing line and the charge jumps to every husk standing under it.
  • Flame Torrent aimed through a Blizzard ends the storm in steam. Wet things freeze about twice as fast. Frost puts out a powder keg's fuse.
  • Tempest's wind fans a grass fire downwind, tears laundry off the line, and strips roof panels. Catch a burning crate in the funnel and the flames travel with it.
  • Glacier Wall rises as a curved wall of ice. It dams the mill race. It melts into real water.
  • Meteor digs a crater you can fill. A fresh crater boils the water you pour into it. Gravity Collapse pulls props and cloth into a core, sets them alight, and leaves a bowl in the floor.
  • Cataclysm drops one fireball. The shock ring runs to the edge of the map, and the buildings come apart as the ring reaches them.

What you can do today

Sandbox mode has every spell and short cooldowns. Combat test mode sends waves of melee husks at you. They ragdoll when they drop, lose limbs, and you can pick the limbs up. There is no scoring and no boss yet.

Mouse and keyboard. No gamepad support.

Coming during Early Access

The level editor is the main thing we are building next. You will lay out your own physics sandboxes and puzzles, with the same water, fire and breakable buildings, and share them.

Also planned, and not in the game yet:

  • Destruction mode. Break more, earn more. Knocking a cottage down pays better than knocking over a crate.
  • Physics puzzles built on the spells, and more of them from the editor.
  • Enemy waves with boss fights.
  • More spells.
