What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“DODGE(Y)BALL already has its core 1v1 gameplay in place, but there's more to be done.
Early Access gives me the chance to put the game in front of real players while I continue building out its movement, mechanics, maps, balance and general polish.
A game like this is affected by how people actually play it. I want feedback from more people to help shape what gets expanded, changed or reworked on the way to full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I currently expect DODGE(Y)BALL to remain in Early Access for roughly 6 to 12 months.
That may change depending on player feedback and how development progresses. I would rather leave Early Access when the game genuinely feels ready for full release rather than commit to a date too early and end up rushing features or content.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to expand DODGE(Y)BALL considerably during Early Access.
This includes quite a few more arenas, more ball types, further development of the movement system, additional gameplay mechanics, balance changes, polish and more depth around the existing 1v1 experience. I would also like to expand into 4 player lobbies featuring a Free for all mode.

Some ideas may change as players get their hands on the game. If something turns out to be more fun than expected, I want the freedom to explore it. If something does not work, I want to be able to change it.
The goal for the full version is a much deeper and more refined version of the game while keeping the simple idea at its centre: hit the other player with a ball more than they do it to you, some moments will be silly, some moments will be really cool :).”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core online 1v1 game is fully playable.

Players can host or join matches through Steam and fight across the currently available arenas using charged throws, movement momentum, dashing, catching, blocking and active parries.
The game is centred around continuous scoring rather than resetting after every point. Headshots, MultiBall and other interactions can quickly turn a straightforward exchange into something chaotic and hectic.

The Early Access release will include character customisation, MORE BALLS, MORE MAPS, further controller support, configurable settings, and lobby options.
Early Access is focused on expanding what is already here rather than proving whether the basic game works.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Probably, yeah. The Early Access price will reflect the amount of content available at the time.

I currently expect the price may increase as the game grows and eventually reaches 1.0, but the final price has not been decided yet. Any changes will be communicated in advance and will actually be reasonable.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Player feedback will be an important part of Early Access.

I want to hear what players think about movement, balance, mechanics, maps and anything else that becomes obvious once people start finding strategies and interactions I never expected. Feedback through the Steam Community will help influence what gets adjusted and what areas of the game deserve the most attention.

I also plan to use updates and Steam announcements to explain what is changing and why as development continues.”

About This Game

Ever wanted to smash a dodgeball into your friend's face? Good.

DODGE(Y)BALL is a 1v1 online game about throwing very hard, moving fast, and making the other player regret standing where they did.

Charge your throws for more power, carry your movement into the ball, and aim for any weakness. Headshots are encouraged.

RETURN TO SENDER

Catching is just as important as throwing. Grab an incoming ball and suddenly it's your turn to attack.

If catching sounds too sensible, you can block with the ball you are holding or smash the parry button at the right moment and send the shot straight back at whoever threw it.

MOVE

Dashing is a big part of staying alive, but movement is useful for more than dodging. Your momentum affects your throws, so use this new weapon. Be careful though, your opponent might just return that rocket to you!

Some moves are useful.
Some moves are not.
Both are Dodge(y).

THINGS GET OUT OF HAND

MultiBall can turn a single exchange into several balls flying around the arena at once.

Matches can go from controlled to complete nonsense very quickly, especially once both players start understanding what they can get away with.

KEEP PLAYING

There are no round resets after every point. Score, grab another ball and keep going until somebody reaches the winning score.

DODGE(Y)BALL is built around short competitive matches, counters, and the sort of ridiculous moments that happen when two people become far too invested in balls...
