The letter was on your kitchen table. Gold leaf, a seal you don't recognise, and a congratulations for a draw you never signed up for. Ninety days at Halfway Bay. Perfect weather, held. Five people who are going to be very pleased to meet you.

Your concierge is a talking letter called AUGUST. It is unfailingly polite. It will not tell you what the catch is.

MEET THE CAST

• Nikki - beach lifeguard. Swims past the buoys at six in the morning. You're about to become a morning person.

• Jane - elf. The ears are real, she hears everything, and yes she has been asked before.

• Hannah - all spirit, no team. Will do a cartwheel mid-conversation. Twice.

• Scarlet - goth barista, night shifts only. Hates the sun. Delighted to be the reason you're awake at 3am.

• Veronica - owns the big house on the hill. Hobby: knots. She'll explain. Slowly.

THE BOARD IS THE FLIRTING

Forget swapping neighbours. Grab a tile and drag it the whole length of a row - the entire line rearranges itself to get out of your way. It makes every board readable and every board solvable, and it means a bad turn is a decision, not bad luck.

Six relationship levels each, and the gallery fills as you go. Some sets open on how close you've got. Some want you to take her somewhere specific - three good dates at the beach open things a hundred wins anywhere else won't. Some want you to actually get to know her first.

It's all on your phone, captioned the way she'd caption it, alongside her profile and the things she only tells you once she trusts you.

THIRTY DAYS, AND THEN A CHOICE

The weather here has been perfect for longer than anyone can account for. Two of the girls have started saying things they shouldn't know. One of them remembers a September that never happened.

On the last evening, AUGUST puts two doors in front of you, and every girl gets an ending written from what you actually did with her.

Choose carefully. Only one of them gives the town a September.
