About This Game

“A Glimmer” is a first‑person immersive live‑action interactive movie game. Set around Ping’an County in North China during the 1940 Second Sino‑Japanese War, the protagonist accidentally assumes the identity of fallen underground operative “Wang Qiming”. He takes over the assassination and infiltration mission left behind by the real agent and navigates among bandits, National Revolutionary Army troops, Japanese‑puppet forces, and the Communist underground Party. Repeated choices between national justice, personal vengeance and self‑identity lead to vastly different endings.

Backstory

The protagonist (Guisheng / fake Qiming) is tasked with escorting the real Wang Qiming to Ping’an County to carry out an anti‑traitor mission. On the way, they are caught in a Japanese sweep. The real Qiming is killed in combat. Before dying, he hands over a satchel containing mission letters, the magazine Liuhuo (Flaming Stream) and a Mauser pistol to the protagonist. Suffering head trauma, the protagonist falls into a river. He is rescued by siblings Chen Xing’er and Sanhuzi from Taohua Village. When he regains consciousness, his memory is muddled, and he believes himself to be the operative Wang Qiming, whose mission is to assassinate the warlord Yan Dapao, who has defected to the Japanese invaders.

While recovering in Taohua Village, the kind‑hearted Xing’er places great trust in him, and the two forge a comrade‑in‑arms bond. News leaks that a stranger with a firearm is hiding in the village. Japanese officer Sakamoto Sanjirō leads troops to massacre Taohua Village. Xing’er sacrifices her life covering the protagonist’s escape; Sanhuzi is also killed. Overwhelmed by guilt and burdened with his mission, the protagonist heads alone for the peril‑ridden Ping’an County.

Character Profiles

Chen Xing’er (Xing’er)

A young village girl from Taohua Village. She is gentle, sincere, thoughtful and patriotic. Her younger sister Chen Meier joined the revolution in Guangzhou. Together with her brother Sanhuzi, she saves the gravely injured, amnesiac protagonist, nurses him back to health and trusts him whole‑heartedly. They make a promise that he will teach her to read once his mission is complete. After a local scholar betrays the village, Japanese troops raid the area. While shielding the protagonist, Xing’er is shot dead by officer Sakamoto Sanjirō. She leaves behind one half of a pair of jade pendants, a crucial token that connects the protagonist to her sister Chen Meier.

Hongyu (codename: Peach‑Blossom Fan)

The protagonist’s sworn younger sister. Separated from him during wartime flight in childhood, she is taken in by the Qingfeng Opera Troupe and trains as a female warrior‑opera performer. She later joins the Eighth Route Army intelligence service under the codename Peach‑Blossom Fan. She possesses extensive intelligence and uses the opera Peach‑Blossom Fan performed on‑stage as a recognition signal. She recognizes Guisheng long ago by the scar on his wrist but keeps this to herself. Tough, brave and resourceful, she serves as a key contact for our side. Aware of the full complexity of the protagonist’s past, she guides him toward the border‑region ending.

Yan Yuting

The only daughter of Yan Dapao. She is a progressive, patriotic student full of idealism. She reads progressive publications including Liuhuo (Flaming Stream) and actively takes part in anti‑Japanese student demonstrations. She loves her father yet condemns his collaboration with the Japanese. Innocent and trusting, she introduces the protagonist to her father. Later she is manipulated by Kuomintang secret agents and killed amid student‑protest clashes. Her death becomes the tipping‑point that shatters her father Yan Dapao’s spirit.

Chen Meier

A Kuomintang Military Statistics Bureau secret agent embedded in Ping’an County, and the biological elder sister of Chen Xing’er. She left home to pursue revolutionary activities in Guangzhou and later joined the Bureau. Calm and decisive, she is pragmatic and willing to make sacrifices to accomplish missions. Her elder sister Xing’er’s death haunts her. When she learns the protagonist holds her sister’s keepsake, she learns of their shared history and tries to recruit him into the Kuomintang, unlocking the Flee to Chongqing ending branch. Though Hongyu and she serve different intelligence agencies under the KMT‑CPC split, they share the common goal of resisting Japanese aggression.

Koyama Yunko

The leading entertainer at the Japanese Kabuki‑themed hall. She belongs to the Great Japan National Defense Women’s Association, yet inwardly abhors war. Torn from her homeland and brought to China, she constantly searches for her missing lover. Having witnessed Japanese cruelty, she holds sympathy for the protagonist. Multiple story branches allow her to assist the protagonist in outwitting Wang Zhenshan, and she ultimately aids his assassination mission against Yamada Kōichi.
