What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Because it's more useful in players' hands than in mine.

Skybreak is built by one person, and the parts that matter most — how the drone flies, how combat reads, how the netcode holds up with real players on real connections — can't be finished in isolation. Bots don't fly like people do. A match that feels tight solo can fall apart the moment twelve players and twelve pings are involved.

Early Access lets the flight model and the netcode get tested by the people who actually play it, while the rest of the game is still being built.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 12 months. That's an estimate, not a promise: Skybreak leaves Early Access when Runner and Destroy the Base are in and stable, and when multiplayer holds up under real player counts rather than bots. This is a one-person project, so if the scope or the feedback changes the plan, the estimate will move, and I'll say so in the in-game news feed rather than let it slide quietly.

The news feed lists every version that has actually shipped, so you can judge the pace from what's landed rather than from a promise.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The two modes currently listed as in development — Runner and Destroy the Base — are the main gap between now and a full release, along with the maps and progression that come with them.

Beyond that, the priority is depth on what already exists: more arenas for Team Deathmatch, a wider loadout pool, and continued work on flight feel and netcode.

This is a plan, not a contract. Some of it will change based on what actually plays well and what players ask for, and I'd rather adjust than ship something that isn't fun because it was on a list.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Playable, not finished.

What works today:
  • Team Deathmatch, online or solo against weapon-aware AI bots
  • Practice mode: flight tutorial, ring circuit, target-lock drills, landing challenge
  • Loadout customization across three weapon slots plus gadgets
  • Parties, friend codes, and push-to-talk team voice
  • Full gamepad navigation in-game
  • Free Roam across the open city

What isn't in yet:
  • Runner and Destroy the Base
  • The volumetric cloud and weather work, which lives on the race map
  • Anti-cheat
  • Steam achievements, cloud saves, and leaderboards

Expect rough edges, and expect the population to be small early on — bots fill empty slots so a lobby is never a wait.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Skybreak is a paid title.

The price of the full game will not increase when it leaves Early Access. If anything changes about pricing, it will be announced ahead of time rather than appearing without warning.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through the Steam discussions and the community channels linked from the store page. Bug reports and balance feedback are genuinely useful — small multiplayer games live or die on whether combat feels fair, and that's much easier to judge from the receiving end than from mine.

I read what comes in. I can't act on all of it, and I won't pretend otherwise, but the things players consistently push back on are the things that get looked at first.”

About This Game

Take the skies. Break the storm.

Skybreak is a multiplayer combat drone sandbox where every match plays out above the clouds. Lock on with heat-seekers, read the airspace, and coordinate with your squad over live voice comms — all in a physics-driven flight model built for fast reads and faster reactions.

Built by one person

Skybreak is made by a single developer. No studio, no publisher, no marketing department.

That shapes what this game is. It's scoped like an indie project, not a AAA shooter — built deep rather than wide. The flight model, the combat feel, and the netcode are where the time went, and they're the reason to fly. There's no hundred-hour campaign here, and no cast of voice actors.

It's in early access because it isn't finished. Expect rough edges.

What you can play today

  • Team Deathmatch — Two teams contest air superiority over sprawling city and office arenas. Missiles, machine guns, EMPs, and tactical coordination decide the round. Play it online, or solo against weapon-aware AI bots that fill empty slots so a lobby is never a wait.
  • Practice — Focused drills for flight, targeting, and landing. A gated flight tutorial, a ring circuit, target-lock circuits, and a land-on-pad challenge, so you're combat-ready before your first match.
  • Free Roam — Fly the open city at your own pace. Test loadouts, practice maneuvers, land on pads, or just cruise above the skyline.

In development

Not playable yet. This is what's being worked on, not a release schedule — plans can change.

  • Runner — Racing through ring courses at breakneck speed, navigating turbulence zones and storm corridors. This is where the volumetric cloud and dynamic weather work lives: rain that reacts to your drone's velocity, wind corridors, and cover you can actually hide in.
  • Destroy the Base — Objective-driven team warfare with a full ground army — soldiers, APCs, tanks, and helicopters marching on the enemy base while you and your squad control the airspace.

Systems built for combat feel

  • Heat-seeking missiles — Lock, fire, and watch them track through evasive maneuvers. Multiple warhead types with distinct tactical roles, including a scaled-up EMP that strips 75% of a target's speed. Flares create false heat sources, so a lock is never a guarantee.
  • Loadout customization — Three weapon slots plus gadgets and flight configs. Every build changes how you fight, and slot legality is enforced server-side.
  • Physics-honest flight — Hover derived from real weight, rotor chatter you can hear, momentum you can feel. No arcade nonsense, no simulation punishment.
  • IFF lock reticle — Shifts between circle and diamond based on weapon range, paints in team colors, and scales with target distance. You always know what you're pointed at.

Play together

  • Photon Fusion online play — Low-latency multiplayer with automatic matchmaking.
  • Parties and friends — Friend codes, live presence, and party-aware queues that keep your squad on the same team, not just in the same room.
  • Push-to-talk voice comms — Radio-styled team voice channels with mic selection and per-channel volume.
  • Built for a controller — Every menu, HUD, and in-game action is gamepad-navigable, designed reticle-first. Best played with a controller; mouse and keyboard work but aren't polished yet.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Some of Skybreak's pre-rendered art and marketing assets were created with the help of generative AI tools, including key art, store capsule images, and some written copy such as patch notes. Generative AI is not used at runtime -- nothing in a live match is AI-generated. All gameplay systems, flight physics, netcode, level design, and audio are hand-authored.
