What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Damage Xiangqi is fully playable today, but two of our planned pillars — ranked online matchmaking and server-side clock arbitration — directly affect competitive fairness, and we believe they must be designed and tuned together with a real player community rather than in isolation.

Our concrete goals during Early Access are:
(1) Gather feedback on game balance — piece stats, counterattack rate, damage variance and the default rule presets — from a wide range of players, and ship regular balance updates based on it.
(2) Build, test and tune ranked online matchmaking with server-side clock arbitration.
(3) Add Steam achievements and additional language support.

We are committed to actively maintaining the game throughout Early Access: we will read the Steam forums and reviews, respond to feedback, ship regular updates, and see the project through to the full 1.0 release.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Approximately 6 to 12 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Planned additions for the full release: ranked matchmaking, server-side clock arbitration, balance presets, Steam achievements, and additional language support.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Fully playable and stable: 4-tier CPU opponents, online matches with friends (invite / room code, with reconnection support), the full xiangqi ruleset (Cannon screen-capture, Horse legs, Elephant eyes, palace, river crossing, face-off ban), fully customizable rules and piece stats, and Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and English UI.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. The price will remain the same when the game leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Feedback from Steam forums and reviews will directly shape balance tuning and the priority of upcoming features.”

About This Game

A xiangqi where you don't capture — you grind them down.
Damage Xiangqi rebuilds Chinese chess around HP, Attack and Defense. Pieces no longer fall in one hit. You chip away their HP, and only defeat them when it reaches zero. Damage is randomized, and an attacked piece may strike back. Every point on the board becomes a gamble.

Three actions a turn — dense, deliberate play.
Instead of one move, you take three actions per turn (Red's very first turn: one). Advance, corner them, and strike. There is no checkmate — check is only a warning. The first player to burn the enemy General's HP to zero wins.

The Cannon's bombardment, weaponized.
The Cannon moves like a Chariot but attacks only over exactly one screen piece — and when it lands the killing blow, it leaps onto the target's point. Because of its attack pattern it is almost never countered. Line up your screens and shell the palace.

Xiangqi traditions, kept intact.
Horse legs and Elephant eyes can be blocked, Elephants stay on their side, Advisors and Generals guard the palace, and Soldiers gain sideways movement after crossing the river. The face-off (flying General) ban is in by default — and it becomes a positional weapon.

Tune the luck yourself.
Damage variance, counter success rate, actions per turn, rule toggles — the rules are yours. You can even edit each piece's HP, Attack and Defense individually.

A CPU with real bite — and friends around the world.
Four CPU tiers: Weak / Normal / Strong / Expert. Play friends online via deterministic lockstep sync (friend invite / room code, with reconnection).
