皇牌空战7推出时，距离皇牌空战6已有12年，而距离皇牌空战：无限也已有6年。本作依旧是Strangereal世界的架空背景。玩家将扮演飞行员Trigger驾驶战机与爱尔西亚对抗。
本作在相比之前的在画质上有着很大的进步，本作中的天气将不再是摆设，天气系统会对飞行造成影响，在积雨云中飞行会被雷击，飞机会因为飞行高度过高而冻结等等。本作可以被看作是皇牌空战的集大成之作。”
