What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Backswamps is being developed as an atmospheric psychological horror experience where pacing, exploration, encounters, and the balance between mystery and player guidance are especially important. Early Access allows us to gather player feedback while refining these elements and expanding the experience toward the full release.
We want to develop the game together with its early players while preserving the mystery and atmosphere at the heart of Backswamps.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Backswamps to remain in Early Access for approximately 6–12 months. This may change depending on player feedback and the development of additional content and features. Our priority is to leave Early Access when the full experience reaches the quality and scope we are aiming for.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to expand Backswamps throughout Early Access with additional areas, encounters, discoveries, story content, and further variations of the swamp.
We also aim to refine the overall progression, balance, atmosphere, and pacing based on player feedback and observations from Early Access.
The full version is intended to offer a more complete and polished journey through Backswamps, with additional secrets to discover and a fully developed progression toward the deeper parts of the swamp.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version is a playable version of Backswamps featuring the core exploration and progression systems, procedurally generated boardwalks, multiple environments, encounters, discoveries, and psychological horror elements.
Players can explore the swamp, progress deeper into its layers, discover items and fragments of its story, and encounter the various phenomena and entities that inhabit Backswamps.

The game is still in active development, and some content, balancing, presentation, and progression may change during Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually increase the price as Backswamps grows and receives additional content and features during Early Access. The final price may be higher when the game leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Player feedback will be an important part of Early Access development. We plan to follow community discussions, reviews, bug reports, and suggestions to identify areas that can be improved.

Feedback will be especially valuable for balancing progression, pacing, difficulty, and exploration, as well as identifying which parts of the experience resonate most with players.

Backswamps has a strong creative direction, but Early Access gives us an opportunity to refine the experience based on how players actually explore and experience the swamp.”

About This Game

Descend into the Swamp

Every step draws you deeper into a place that refuses to let you go. Explore an endless procedurally generated swamp where reality slowly begins to unravel.

Explore an Endless Swamp

Every journey is different. Traverse procedurally generated boardwalks, discover forgotten paths, and venture deeper into an ever-changing marshland where no two expeditions are the same.

Uncover Forgotten Fragments

Discover mysterious objects, forgotten memories, and remnants left behind by those who came before you. Piece together the hidden history of the swamp through exploration rather than exposition.

Hold on to Your Sanity

The deeper you descend, the less you can trust your own senses. Preserve your sanity as reality twists around you and familiar paths begin to change.

Atmospheric Psychological Horror

Backswamps focuses on atmosphere, exploration, environmental storytelling, and psychological horror rather than combat. Every sound, every shadow, and every step contributes to an unsettling journey into the unknown.

Every Expedition is Unique

Procedurally generated environments ensure that each descent offers new paths, new discoveries, and new dangers waiting beneath the fog.

Something Watches

The swamp is not empty.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Backswamps contains some pre-generated visual assets created with the assistance of generative AI, including certain textures and interface artwork. All AI-assisted content has been reviewed, curated, and integrated by the developer. The game does not generate AI content during gameplay.
