What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Regular chess had millennia to balance itself. We added about twenty new pieces and we would like to figure out which ones are broken before telling you it's finished.

Early Access is what we specifically need in order to:

- Reach ideal balance: test the values of the new pieces with real matches and hard data, using the feedback of an active community.
- Polish the player experience: fix unexpected bugs and add the Steam features (Achievements, for one) as the game evolves.
- Listen to players: understand which modes and variants people care about most, so we can prioritise what comes next.

The game is already fully playable and the backbone is complete: the final tuning, though, works far better done together with you than on paper. We are fully committed to keeping Last Gambit in active development, listening to community feedback, and seeing the project through to its official release and beyond.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“A few months, or until the community is big enough to really put the balance to the test. We need the time to gather enough matches to see which pieces need adjusting and to close out the last fixes. Before the full version comes out we will give you advance notice, instead of vanishing.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Mostly in balance: piece values reworked based on match statistics. Plus the last fixes, maybe a few extra pieces or skins if the ideas hold up, and the usual polish nobody notices until it's missing.

During Early Access, the current version already includes:

- Story mode with a branching map.
- Online 1v1 PvP with cross-play between PC and Android (playable offline too).
- Free deployment, fusions, evolutions and unlockable skins.

For the full release we plan to add and refine:

- Definitive balance: full tuning of piece values based on the real data gathered during the tests.
- Platform features: complete integration of Achievements and Steam features.
- Cosmetics and variants: possible new skins and minor additions, weighed against community suggestions and feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Playable and content-rich: story mode with a branching map, online 1v1 PvP with cross-play between PC and Android, free deployment, fusions and evolutions, unlockable skins. You can also play offline. Most of the remaining work is on balance, and some modes may still be reworked based on your feedback.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game stays free for the whole of Early Access. We will announce how the full version works well in advance, before release, and whoever is playing now will not lose out.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Pieces only get balanced by playing against them. We'll use feedback and match data to decide what to adjust, and we'll read the complaints about which piece is "clearly broken" (spoiler: everyone has a different one). The community forums and channels are the right place to tell us where we're getting it wrong.”

About This Game

The chess you know ends on the first move.

In Last Gambit the board doesn't hand you an army: you build it yourself. Piece by piece, battle by battle, until your formation looks like nothing an opening manual ever prepared for.

An army that grows with you

27 pieces, from the six classics to ones you won't find in any chess club: the Unicorn, the Griffon, the Void Queen that leaves through one edge and comes back through the other, the Phoenix that returns from its ashes, Catapults and Trebuchets that hurl your own pieces, the Summoner, the Mirror.

You start with a handful. The rest have to be discovered: by taking down the Story bosses, by winning under crazy conditions (with your King strolling across half the board, or coming back from ten points down), by earning trophies, by experimenting in the Laboratory. Every piece you discover is one more weapon, online too.

Fuse two pieces into a stronger one, clone the one you need, evolve your pawns in the middle of the fight. Deployment is free: you decide the formation.

A Story that never plays the same way twice

A branching map, chapters of battles, merchants and bosses. Along the way you collect perks that bend the rules: rewind a move, freeze a piece, teleport it, revive what had fallen. Every run is a different army and a new problem.

And you are not alone. Players on your same seed show up on the map: you can trade pieces and perks with them in the Barter, or challenge them with the roster of your run. If they aren't around, you challenge their ghost.

Online, where theory isn't enough

Two ways to prepare for battle, and each one changes how you think about the match.

In Fixed the match starts with a draw: a pool of pieces, the same for you and your opponent. Each of you bans one, then you build your army from the offers and deploy it. Same cards on the table, two different armies: make the most of the draw to get the edge on your opponent.

In Budget you have a reserve of points and every piece has its price. A few powerful pieces or a large army: you decide where to spend, and your opponent, from the same catalogue, may have chosen differently.

Matchmaking finds players who want the same match as you, by rating, time and perks. With perks on, before the start each player gets one drawn from a shared deck.

When you want to play alone there is the computer, which uses perks as well as you do, even offline. Or two players on the same screen.

And if you'd rather play as a pair, online there is two versus two as well.

For those who never stop

All 27 pieces to discover, perk collections and fusion recipes to complete, more than forty trophies to earn, and some of them give you a new piece. Then new goals every week and your Career, with stats and ranks.

The board is the same as always. Everything else isn't.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Some of Last Gambit's content was created with the help of generative AI tools. Specifically, part of the artwork for the pieces and skins was generated with AI and then reviewed and refined by us. We also used AI to assist with some cross-platform code porting.

All of this content is generated during development. The game does not use generative AI during matches and does not create content in real time.
