About This Game

Best Viewed Up Close is a cozy exploration game inside a living oil painting.

Explore, observe wildlife, uncover hidden corners of the meadow, and complete an illustrated field journal, one painted discovery at a time.

Over 1,000 real canvases were painted by hand, photographed, and stitched into a continuous meadow you can wander at bug scale. Climb flowers, ride insects, discover hidden wildlife, and fill a field journal in a world that was about to disappear beneath concrete.

You were supposed to pave it.

The job was simple.

The meadow comes out. The gravel goes down. The concrete goes over it.

Boots on. Gloves on. Sunburn already starting.

Then the grass got tall.

Or you got small.

Either way, the parking spot is going to have to wait.

Explore the meadow from a new perspective

Every region has its own palette, brushwork, and wildlife.

  • Climb foxglove stalks to reach the canopy.

  • Drift across ponds on flower petals.

  • Catch a ride from a bee.

  • Follow beetles, spiders, aphids, and birds living ordinary lives that suddenly feel enormous.

Nothing is trying to stop you. The reward is simply seeing what was always there.

Fill a field journal

Everything you discover becomes part of your journal.

Watch a robin hunt.

Find insects hidden beneath leaves.

Study flowers up close.

Every completed page is cropped directly from the original oil paintings, turning your discoveries into a growing collection of artwork.

A world painted by hand

This isn't a shader or an art filter.

Every environment, creature, animation, and texture began as a physical oil painting on canvas.

More than 1,000 individual paintings were photographed and assembled into a living world where every frame is real paint.

What the concrete would have covered

The meadow isn't empty.

A beetle rolls its prize down the trail.

A spider rebuilds her web after rain.

A line of aphids disappears beneath a leaf.

A robin's shadow passes overhead and suddenly everything small goes still.

Nothing here wants your attention.

You simply learn to notice.
