What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Jamaican Ludi is an online game about a game that everybody plays a little differently. Every yard, every family, every parish has its own house rules — which cuts count, when a roadblock can be jumped, what happens on a six. We have shipped the ruleset we grew up with, but the only way to know which variants people actually want is to put it in front of players and listen.

The second reason is the online side. Room browsing, private codes, voice chat and reconnect behavior all work, but they behave differently with a hundred people playing than they do in testing. Early Access lets us tune matchmaking, connection handling and match pacing with real players in real conditions, and lets those players shape what gets built next instead of finding out after release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to be in Early Access for roughly six to nine months. That timeline depends on what players ask for once they are in the game — if feedback points us toward more rule variants or deeper online features, we would rather take the extra time and get it right than leave Early Access on a schedule.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to grow the game in four directions, guided by what players tell us:

• Online stakes — matches played for a pot of coins you earned in game, settled and verified on our servers. Coins are earned by playing, have no real-world value, and cannot be bought or cashed out.
• House rules — optional rule variants drawn from how different households actually play, so you can set up a match that matches your table.
• More to earn — additional boards, dice and pawn sets, all unlocked through play.
• Polish and reach — ongoing AI tuning, match pacing, connection handling, and additional language support.

These are our intentions rather than promises, and the order may change based on what the community asks for first.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Jamaican Ludi is fully playable today, solo and online.

What is in the game now:
• Three modes — One Dice, Two Dice, and First to Go Home — for two to four players
• Solo matches against CPU opponents, with coin stakes played from coins you earned
• Online multiplayer: browse public rooms, host private rooms with a code, invite Steam friends, voice chat in match
• 30 Steam achievements, cloud-saved progress, and a collection of boards, dice and pawns unlocked by playing
• Full interface in English, Spanish and Jamaican Patois
• A living island setting with a day-night cycle and changing weather

What to expect at this stage: online matches are currently free to enter while we finish server-verified coin stakes. Early on, how quickly you find a public match depends on how many players are online, so private room codes and friend invites are the reliable way to get a game going. Expect regular updates, and expect some rough edges — telling us about them is the point of Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to raise the price modestly when the game leaves Early Access, as the online features and additional content described above are added. Anyone who buys during Early Access receives every update at no additional cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Two ways: by asking, and by making it easy to tell us.

Jamaican Ludi has feedback and bug reporting built into the game, so you can send a report the moment something feels wrong without leaving the match. We read all of it.

Beyond that, we will be on the Steam Community Hub — running polls on which house rules to support next, posting what we are working on, and asking directly which features matter most to you. Players who want to test earlier can opt into a beta branch to try changes before they go out to everyone. When something ships because a player asked for it, we will say so in the patch notes.”
