What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Onward is still in it's infancy in terms of overall design, and game modes. Before the game is considered finished, I want to add more scenarios and environments, improve weapon models and sound effects, and better the user experience throughout early access development. The best way to accomplish this is to get this game out to the public for feedback, so that Onward can be the best game it can be!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I plan to have Onward in early access for 10 to 12 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I would like the full version of Onward to have around 6 to 8 maps, each with day/night modes and dynamic weather, as well as new custom built weapons and characters assets. Once the community has grown and I have stress tested servers, I hope to push the player count up to 12v12. I also want to add a coop "enemy elimination" mode in the future so players can team up together against AI on multiplayer maps, to practice before going to PVP. And lastly I also plan to have deeper steam integration in terms of ranks and achievements.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current state of the game has functioning online multiplayer, two maps with day and night modes, one game type, customizable loadouts, equipment ranging from grenades, flash bangs, and night vision, 28 faction specific weapons, and a shooting range to test weapons.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“There will be an increase in price after Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to involve the community while developing this game by having a public Trello Board for all players to vote and decide what priorities/features should be worked on first. I will also conduct weekly
discussions through the Onward Steam Group, and schedule and dedicate time to play alongside others to gather feedback while in game. I will keep players updated with posts on the Onward Steam page, the Onward website, YouTube channel, and VR Subreddits.”

Update v1.3.2

Hey all,

Small patch today with a lot of content focused on spectating/streaming additions, fixes and improvement to put on a great show at the Onward tournament at Oculus Connect 5 next week Sept 26-27. New 2D spectating UI, improvements to tent and VR spectating, improvements to player IK bodies, and more below.

  • Competitive Cast/Stream: New UI
  • Competitive Cast/Stream: Added "-novr" launch parameter to launch the game without VR. This only allows you to join games as a spectator

  • VR Spectate: Enabled grenade trails
  • Frag Grenade: Now damages Drones
  • Smoke Grenade: Improved performance
  • Tablet: Increased spacing between "Send" and "Clear" buttons on send uplink screen (prevent accidental clearing)

  • Competitive: Fixed objectives not mirroring when host was swapped
  • Ballistic Shield: Fixed swapping hands back and forth rapidly lagging game
  • Suburbia: When spectating, bushes by garage/basketball hoop will no longer be invisible

  • Player: Fixed network players spawning with all headgear on
  • Player: Fixed network players spawning with incorrect team skin
  • Player: Fixed being unable to move if in contact with another player when they disconnected.
  • Gun: Fixed network gun positions stuttering when held only by barrel/foregrip
  • Frag Grenade: Fixed laying on a frag to block damage to others not being reliable
