Lasers, spikes, gas, scalding steam: every room has its own way of killing you. Survive, room after room, under the gaze of someone who records everything. But the worst trap is the other subjects: trust them, betray them, sacrifice yourself? Here, survival has a price. You choose which one.

About This Demo

NEW: play online with a friend. Survival, Course, Evacuation and Labyrinth, two players over the internet: quick match or invite a Steam friend.

Survivors' Tournament, during Steam Next Fest: from Monday, October 19 at 7 pm to Wednesday, October 21 at 7 pm (Paris time, UTC+2). Five trials, including a brand-new course revealed at the opening. The best result in each trial wins a key for the full game. Sign up from the EVENTS tab of the main menu, and record your runs: every winning result is checked on video. The trials can also be played online with a second player: pick TOURNAMENT in the lobby, and each player is ranked on their own score.

Intercepted transmission fragment: "…the subject is awake. Begin the evaluation."

Officially, you don't exist. You wake up in a sealed metal room, a voice calls it "tests", and no one is coming for you.

This demo: the start of the game, from waking up to the infirmary, then a first day in the colony, between half an hour and an hour. The trainings and their online leaderboards are included.

Spiked walls, jets of scalding steam, pistons, gas, laser curtains. The traps never stop, and you only find out which one is waiting for you once the door is open. Watch, wait for the right moment, or run. You are not the first to come through here: the bodies prove it.

Other subjects share the facility. Some will help you. Others will wait for you to turn your back, or gang up three at a time to be sure. And when everything breaks down, you have to fight. Three paths open up before you, and none of them is free. The game shows no morality meter, but it forgets nothing.

Dozens of cameras cover the facility. A voice comments on your every move, provokes you, judges you. You can watch the screens too: a cell, a door opening, someone who doesn't know they're being filmed. Then the screen cuts to SIGNAL LOST. Further on, in the infirmary, you are asked a simple routine question. Your answer decides which trial awaits you.

Surviving is only the beginning. The facility doesn't just evaluate you, it settles you in: a cafeteria, a greenhouse, a library, a room with your name on it. The other subjects live here, some of them for a very long time. The more normal this life feels, the less you'll ask what it costs.

Here, nobody survives by luck. Between tests, the facility trains you: hold out against waves of robots, cross the courses between pistons and electrified tiles, go down into the labyrinth in the dark with whatever lurks there, reach the evacuation elevator through trapped rooms. Every training has its own online leaderboard. Alone, or two players on the same screen. And now, two players online.

  • Trapped rooms to explore freely: go forward, double back, find another way
  • Traps that never switch off: spiked walls, scalding steam, pistons, gas, lasers
  • Other subjects on your path: possible allies, certain traitors
  • A first day in the colony: a room, routines, faces
  • An ever-present voice that comments, provokes and judges (voices in French and English)
  • Text and subtitles in 17 languages
  • Close-quarters combat, against robots and against other subjects
  • Replayable trainings (Survival, Labyrinth, Evacuation, Courses), with online leaderboards
  • Local 2-player split screen (Versus races, Duo Survival): requires a controller and a keyboard (or two controllers)
  • Online 2-player multiplayer in all four training modes: quick match or invite a Steam friend

Inspired by paranoid sci-fi closed-room thrillers like Cube. The real question isn't "how do I get out", but "who will you be when you do".

We Don't Exist is still in active development: the full game will add more content before release. If the facility makes you want to stay, add it to your wishlist.
