About This Game

Blotch is a top-down stealth game about hiding from guards who are looking straight at you. You can't fight them, and running away only means hiding somewhere else. What you can do is paint yourself the exact color of the floor.

You're a small blob of wet paint with two enormous googly eyes. Hold the eyedropper over the ground and it magnifies, until you can pick out the one shade you want. Take it, paint it over yourself, and stand very still.

Every color in the game is one you can take: grass, road grit, the grout between two cobbles, the brushwork on a painting in the gallery. Get a bush exactly right and a patrol walks past close enough to touch you. One shade too light and it comes over to look.

Fresh paint stays wet for a couple of seconds. Long enough to drag a stripe of itself along the floor behind you, and anything can follow a stripe.

Then it gets harder. A clock counts down and every guard sharpens as it does. Night takes the map away. Ice takes your footing but not your speed. Searchlights, cameras, sprinklers, and rain that washes a careful coat straight off you.

And three hunters that a perfect coat does nothing about: a hound that follows your wet footprints, a profiler who can't see color and reads your outline instead, and a listener with no eyes at all, who just hears you walk on gravel.

You're not unarmed. Throw a rock to knock a guard out cold. Throw a paint bomb. Hose a hiding place onto bare floor. Or aim any of it at the guard, who then stands there scrubbing itself while you walk past.

Or knit a decoy out of your own coat, let a patrol waste twenty seconds confiscating it, and slip into the Understreet: the drains and vents under the level, where a fluid blob fits and nothing up top can see you.

Thirty-two hand-made levels, and no level select. There's an island, and you walk around it. The old owner's paintings still hang where he left them, each behind a little red curtain until you earn it. Walk up to one, step in, and you're standing in the place it's a picture of.

Doors cost stars, and secrets open more. Seven people who live here will stop you for a chat, and each of them knows something the tutorial cards have no room for.

Then take it online, in five modes. In Hide and Seek one player gets a paint gun and no paint at all, and sweeps a fog-locked arena while everybody else paints themselves into the scenery. In Infection, getting caught doesn't end your round: you come back hunting.

And in Prop Hunt you're not a blob at all. You're a crate, or a barrel, or a suit of armor: real furniture from that map, blank white, and you paint it yourself. Stand where a crate stands. Hold still. Watch the hunter walk down the row.

The paint job is the whole game. How closely you copied the ground is exactly how hidden you are.

Outsmart them, because you can't beat them. Read the patrol, watch the warning arc fill, go through the gap.

Night levels take the map away. You get it back only where you've walked, until a lamp or a glowing mushroom throws enough light.

Things that ruin an afternoon. Searchlights, cameras, sprinklers, rain, and a hunter for every sense. Even the pigeons.

A rock, a paint bomb, a hose and a plush decoy. The hose builds cover where there wasn't any. The bomb works on guards too.

The Understreet. The drains under the level, where nothing up there can see you. You pay in rust and floodwater.

Thirty-two hand-made levels. No level select: you arrive by boat and walk an island, opening doors with stars.

Five ways to play online. Hide and Seek, Infection and Head to Head, plus Hide and Seek (Prop Hunt) and Infection (Prop Hunt), where the hiders are the map's own furniture.

Build your own and share it. A full level editor and tile studio in-game, plus Steam Workshop.

Keyboard and mouse or a controller. Every binding remappable. The warning arcs change shape as well as color, and a tone can rise as your coat gets closer.
