What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Barnburners is a one-person passion project, and arcade hockey lives or dies on how it feels. I can tune that on my own all day, but nothing beats getting it in front of people who grew up on '94 and the Hitz games. Early Access lets me do that and put out a game that's already genuinely fun to play, then sharpen the feel, the balance, and the content alongside the people actually playing it. I'd rather build the rest of this with community feedback than guess over and over doing solo playtests myself.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I'm planning on roughly 6 months, but I care more about getting it right. The game is already a full package, so for me Early Access is about polishing and adding to it, not finishing / making it content complete How long it takes will depend a lot on what players want me to focus on first.

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access build is already pretty much a full game, so my goal for the full version is to deepen it, not fill in missing pieces. Things I plan to work on:

Continuing to deepen season/franchise mode.
A real announcer/commentary pass, and more music and crowd audio.
An art and animation polish pass across the board (currently using tools at my disposal, which really shows).
Ongoing improvements to online multiplayer.

In what order I work on these will lean heavily on player feedback during Early Access.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“It's a complete, playable arcade hockey game today

Full 5-on-5 hockey against the CPU, with goalies, line changes, and fatigue.
Online head-to-head multiplayer and local play.
Penalties, power plays, and special teams that follow current rules.
24 fictional teams, each with its own roster, stats, and identity.
Presentation: pre-game intros and anthem, three-stars, instant replays for goals, a photo mode and instant replay.
Full controller support, accessibility options like high-contrast kits, and achievements.

It runs well and it's fun to play. Early Access is about making it deeper and more polished. not making it work (but of course if there are bugs and issues, those come first).”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to start at a early access price and raise it gradually as I add new content and features.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to be hands-on with regular updates driven by what players run into. I already tweak the game constantly off playtest notes and metrics I receive from those who opt in to sending anonymous data back, and I want to keep doing that out in the open: balance changes, feel adjustments, and which features to build next. If something feels off, like a hit that doesn't land right or a mode you wish existed, let me know because a big chunk of the roadmap will come straight from that. There are in game feedback areas that send feedback directly to me, and I will also monitor the community hub.”

About This Game

Barnburners is a love letter to the arcade hockey games of the '90s and early '00s. Easy to pick up, tricky to truly master, and built for huge hits, dirty dangles, and top shelf goals.

Core Game

5v5 hockey the way the old arcade games played it: penalties on, offside and icing off by default, and fights that leave their mark on the ice until it gets resurfaced. A faceoff camera straight out of 1994. Franchise mode, pond hockey, and a stack of arcade modes round it out.

Multiplayer Header

Friends on the couch or friends far away, you can go head to head or team up against the CPU. Online Play Now matches you online with someone else looking, preset rules, no fuss. Or host a private lobby with a join code and tune the rules to your heart's content.

Teams Header

Barnburners introduces the BHL: 24 fictional clubs from real hockey towns, each playing the style its city is famous for. Boston and Philly hit hard. Detroit plays 2 way hockey, Every club has a captain with a signature ability that charges up over the game and doubles down on the team identity.

Franchise Header

Pick a club, build a dynasty, and chase the Clevenger Cup. Set your lines, swing deadline trades, sign free agents, and draft your next stars, all while keeping ownership happy and staying under the cap. Watch a prospect grow from draft night to the minors, then call him up and find out if he has what it takes. There is no end date. Run it as long as you want.
