What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The Return is a 2D action roguelite inspired by Chinese shadow puppetry and the traditional concept of the eighteen levels of Hell. The current build includes the prologue and several completed chapters, with the core combat, room exploration, skills, artifacts, rewards, and boss encounters available for testing.
We are choosing Early Access because we want to continue expanding the game while improving it through real player feedback. We especially want to use player experience to refine combat feel, difficulty progression, room pacing, boss design, skill and artifact balance, progression systems, controls, and performance.
Our long-term goal is to complete the full journey through the prologue and eighteen levels of Hell. We also plan to add more playable characters, enemies, bosses, skills, artifacts, permanent progression, town features, equipment systems, and story content. During Early Access, we will continue developing new content, fixing bugs, improving the experience, and communicating important changes through development updates and patch notes.
Community feedback will help us set development priorities. Some suggestions may be implemented, postponed, or declined when they do not fit the overall direction of the game, but we will review feedback carefully and remain committed to bringing the project to its planned full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Based on our current development plan, we expect Early Access to last approximately six months to one year. During this period, we will continue adding chapters, enemies, bosses, characters, and systems while making balance adjustments, fixing bugs, and improving the overall experience based on player feedback. The schedule may change depending on development progress and testing results.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to include nineteen chapter nodes: the prologue and the eighteen levels of Hell. It will contain more playable characters, enemies, elite enemies, bosses, skills, artifacts, rewards, and story conversations.
We also plan to expand permanent progression, town features, shops, equipment, and upgrade systems, while further improving difficulty balance, performance, localization, and overall polish. The exact content and development order may change based on testing and feedback during Early Access.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version includes the prologue and Chapters 1 through 7, for a total of eight chapter nodes. Each chapter currently provides approximately 30 minutes of main gameplay, and completing the available content takes around 8 hours.
The current build includes the core combat loop, room exploration, reward choices, skills, artifacts, character progression, regular enemies, and boss encounters. We are continuing to expand the amount of content and improve combat balance, level pacing, story presentation, performance, and localization.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will be sold at its announced Early Access price. As the amount of content and the number of features increase, the price may be adjusted when Early Access ends. Any price change will be announced in advance on the Steam store page and through community announcements.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will use the Steam Community Hub and discussion forums to collect bug reports, balance suggestions, feedback about controls and combat, feature requests, and content ideas. We will also share development progress and important changes through announcements and patch notes.
Community feedback will help prioritize improvements to combat feel, difficulty progression, room pacing, boss mechanics, skill and artifact balance, rewards and progression, quality-of-life features, performance, and localization. We will review repeated and representative feedback and consider it when planning future updates.
The community will not decide every design detail, but players’ actual experiences will directly influence update priorities, balance values, level design, and quality-of-life improvements. For significant suggestions, we will explain through announcements, patch notes, or discussions whether they were adopted, postponed, or declined, and why.”

About This Game

Early Access is now available through Chapter 7. Players can experience the core loop combining side-scrolling action combat, skill building, artifact synergy, and handcrafted room progression.

Future content will be updated continuously, with a target pace of approximately 3 to 6 weeks per new chapter or character. We will steadily refine numerical balance, control feel, combat performance, and overall content volume. Subsequent chapters will also expand the underworld theme, monster ecology, boss battles, and level design, gradually completing the journey through all eighteen layers of hell.

You were once an ordinary person from the mortal world. Perhaps a swordsman. Perhaps a gunslinger. Or just someone who was never meant to be here.

One day, you are arrested without explanation and thrown into a cold, grim prison. The other inmates tell you this is no ordinary jail—it is a prison deep within the eighteenth layer of hell. No one knows why they were taken here. All they know is that the place is guarded by a band of lazy, greedy, and malevolent monsters.

By chance, you manage to escape your cell. But escaping the prison does not mean freedom. Outside is still the underworld: no water, no food, no road back to the land of the living. Just when you are about to give up, you stumble upon a camp of living people. They give you food and water—but they also reveal an even more crushing truth: this is still only a small corner of the eighteenth layer. Many have tried to go further. None have ever returned.

You can stay—surviving in suffocating fear. Or you can take up your weapon and walk the path that no one has ever completed.

The core experience of The Return lies in side-scrolling action combat, skill building, artifact synergies, and handcrafted room-by-room progression. Each chapter is built around a distinct penal theme of the underworld, featuring unique enemies, environmental atmospheres, and combat rhythms.

At the start of each run, you choose a character to enter the underworld. Along the way, you acquire spiritual essence, skills, artifacts, and attribute upgrades, gradually forming your own build for that run.

The chests and rewards you find are not凭空出现的—they are "Remnants of the Fallen": lingering power left behind by rebels who came before, those who died unjustly, or mighty warriors consumed by the infernal order. You will borrow this strength to transform from a mere mortal into one who can challenge the very structure of the underworld.

As you push deeper layer by layer, the truth will slowly surface: the so-called spiritual essence is not a natural resource. It is something the underworld refines from living people who should never have died. The power you gain from defeating monsters is nothing more than the residue circulating through this cruel system.

The Return is both the path the dead must walk—and the reverse road by which the living fight their way back to the mortal world.
