What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Because it's more useful in players' hands than in mine.

Skybreak is built by one person, and the parts that matter most — how the drone flies, how combat reads, how the netcode holds up with real players on real connections — can't be finished in isolation. Bots don't fly like people do. A match that feels tight solo can fall apart the moment twelve players and twelve pings are involved.

Early Access lets the flight model and the netcode get tested by the people who actually play it, while the rest of the game is still being built.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 12 months. That's an estimate, not a promise: Skybreak leaves Early Access when Death Race is in, Destroy the Base has its ground vehicles and online matches, and multiplayer holds up under real player counts rather than bots. This is a one-person project, so if the scope or the feedback changes the plan, the estimate will move, and I'll say so in the patch notes rather than let it slide quietly.

Patch notes for every release are posted as Steam events and on the website, so you can judge the pace from what's landed rather than from a promise.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Death Race, plus ground vehicles and online matches for Destroy the Base, are the main gap between now and a full release, along with the maps and progression that come with them.

Beyond that, the priority is depth on what already exists: more arenas for Team Deathmatch, a wider loadout pool, and continued work on flight feel and online play.

This is a plan, not a contract. Some of it will change based on what actually plays well and what players ask for, and I'd rather adjust than ship something that isn't fun because it was on a list.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Playable, not finished.

What works today:
  • Team Deathmatch, 6v6 online, or 4v4 solo against AI drones at four difficulty levels
  • Destroy the Base, 5v5 against bots: capture fortified checkpoints with infantry and break the enemy base
  • Practice: five guided drills, from basic flight to acro flight and gadget combat
  • Free Roam across the open city
  • Ship Creator: build your craft from hulls, engines, wings and weapon carriers; the parts you choose change how it flies and fights, and it keeps the physics flight model and acro mode
  • Weapons and gadgets mounted on your ship: missile launchers or paired cannons on the wings, a dorsal weapon, and Defense and Utility gadgets
  • Parties, friend codes, and push-to-talk team voice
  • Full gamepad navigation in-game

What isn't in yet:
  • Death Race
  • Ground vehicles and online matches in Destroy the Base
  • Anti-cheat
  • Steam achievements, cloud saves, and leaderboards

Expect rough edges, and expect the online population to be small early on — AI drones top up matches that aren't full.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Skybreak is a paid title.

The price of the full game will not increase when it leaves Early Access. If anything changes about pricing, it will be announced ahead of time rather than appearing without warning.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Through the Steam discussions and the community channels linked from the store page. Bug reports and balance feedback are genuinely useful — small multiplayer games live or die on whether combat feels fair, and that's much easier to judge from the receiving end than from mine.

I read what comes in. I can't act on all of it, and I won't pretend otherwise, but the things players consistently push back on are the things that get looked at first.”

About This Game

Take the skies. Break the storm.

Skybreak is a drone combat game built around a physics-driven flight model. Build your own craft, lock on with heat-seekers, read the airspace, and coordinate with your squad over team voice comms — from city rooftops to storm-capped battlefields.

Build your own ship

The Ship Creator lets you put your craft together from parts: a hull, engines, wings, and the weapon carriers and equipment that mount on them. Start from one of five preset designs or a bare hull, and save your own designs as blueprints. The ship you build is the one you take into matches, and other pilots see it as you built it.

Parts aren't just looks:

  • Hull — Each hull has its own weight, hull strength, and budget of capacity and power for everything you attach to it.
  • Engines — Thrust against your ship's total mass decides how hard it accelerates and how fast it tops out. Pile on armour and weapons without the engines to match and you'll feel it.
  • Wings — Carry your wing weapons. Sturdier wings add hull strength but weigh more.
  • Weapons and gadgets — Missile launchers and cannons on the wings, a dorsal weapon such as the area salvo or a tracking machine gun, plus shield, flare and turbo equipment. Each one draws on your capacity and power.

Mass, capacity and power are only spent on parts that do something in a fight. Outriggers and equipment cradles that just move a wing or a weapon into a different position are free, so you can lay out your ship the way you like.

Built ships fly on the same physics model as the rest of the game, hover and acro mode included. Hulls, wings and engines are all available from the start; weapons and gadgets are unlocked in the in-game shop.

Built by one person

Skybreak is made by a single developer. No studio, no publisher, no marketing department.

That shapes what this game is. It's scoped like an indie project, not a AAA shooter — built deep rather than wide. The flight model and the combat feel are where the time went, and they're the reason to fly. There's no hundred-hour campaign here, and no cast of voice actors.

It's in early access because it isn't finished. Expect rough edges.

What you can play today

  • Team Deathmatch — 6v6 online, first team to 30 kills. Missiles, guns, EMPs, and tactical coordination decide the round. If the lobby isn't full after a short warmup, AI drones top it up.
  • Team Deathmatch vs bots — 4v4 solo against AI drones, with four difficulty levels from Rookie to Ace.
  • Destroy the Base — 5v5 against bots across an industrial district. Capture five checkpoints with infantry waves: load troop squads into your drone at your home pad and set them down at a checkpoint to deploy. Checkpoints are fortified with gun and anti-air emplacements, so pick your approach. The enemy base stays shielded until your team holds every checkpoint — destroy it to win.
  • Practice — Five guided drills: Simple Flight, Offensive, Supportive and Defensive gadgets, and Complex (acro) Flight.
  • Free Roam — Fly the open city at your own pace and try out your ship. No opponents, no objective.

In development

Not playable yet. This is what's being worked on, not a release schedule — plans can change.

  • Death Race — Racing through ring courses at breakneck speed, through turbulence zones and storm corridors.
  • More Destroy the Base — ground vehicles joining the infantry waves, and online matches.

Systems built for combat feel

  • Lock-on missiles — Heat seekers and direct-tracking warheads: damage, fire, repair for your allies, a jammer that cuts a target's engines and sends it into freefall, and an EMP that strips 75% of a target's top speed and turning for five seconds. Flares decoy heat seekers, so a lock is never a guarantee.
  • Loadout built into your ship — Weapons and gadgets mount on the parts you fit: missile launchers or paired cannons on the wings, with the cannons focused on one target or split across two, a dorsal weapon such as the area salvo or a tracking machine gun, and Defense and Utility gear from a battery-powered hex shield to flares and a turbo jump. Every build changes how you fight.
  • Physics-honest flight — Hover computed from your ship's actual weight, thrust from the engines you fit, and an acro mode with the stabiliser off for pilots who want full control.
  • IFF lock reticle — Shifts between circle and diamond based on weapon range and is coloured by friend, foe, or unknown. You always know what you're pointed at.

Play together

  • Parties and friends — Friend codes, live presence, and party-aware queues that keep your squad on the same team, not just in the same room.
  • Push-to-talk voice comms — Radio-styled team voice with mic selection, a volume slider, and an option to mute enemy comms.
  • Built for a controller — Menus and gameplay are designed around a gamepad. Best played with a controller; mouse and keyboard work but aren't polished yet.

Early access

Patch notes for every release are posted as Steam events and on the website, so you can see the pace for yourself rather than take a promise for it.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Some of Skybreak's pre-rendered art and marketing assets were created with the help of generative AI tools, including key art, store capsule images, and some written copy such as patch notes. Generative AI is not used at runtime -- nothing in a live match is AI-generated. All gameplay systems, flight physics, netcode, level design, and audio are hand-authored.
